Great player......
Oustanding performance, versatile and ergonomicThe headphones are an extremely comfortable design...much improved from earlier models. Sony has outdone themselves, and hopefully Panasonic will be able to catch up to this unit, because, as of this writing, they have yet to come out with a "Shockwave" mp3 cd player. For now, if you don't mind paying a little extra money, you won't be disappointed.

- 240 watts total power
- Stereo speakers with dual 5.6-inch subwoofers
- 3 preset and 3 manual equalization settings and simulated surround sound (dance/club/hall/stadium)

Ugly looks, ugly soundI just didn't like it. It's loud but that's about it. It sounded OK at lower volumes. The biggest problem I had was with the lack of depth. It was all high end, no mid range whatsoever. The sound presets (Hall, Rock, Stadium, Dance etc) were just lousy. Half of them sounded exactly the same. There was no richness there. The bass boost didn't really help, either. With no way to really control bass and treble the sound was just flat.
I ended up sending it back and getting a Kenwood NV-301. Am I glad I did. What a difference. It's stylish, elegant and it sounds 10 times better than the JVC. It has CD text which is great for all the CD-Rs you have burned, you can adjust the bass and treble, and it has an input for a subwoofer, something the JVC didn't have. Adding an inexpensive subwoofer from some place like Cambridge Soundworks will really make this thing sound even better.
Overall the JVC is just a giant boom box with boom box sound. Its THD is 10%! The Kenwood's THD (total harmonic distortion) is .09% which makes it sound richer. The Kenwood is cheaper, too.
I hope this helps.
This thing is just awesome

How do I love Phil? Let me count the ways . . .The Bad: The headphones good ol' Phil came with just aren't my cup of tea. They're uncomfortable. And they muffle the music. That problem wasn't hard to fix, though. I just bought some those headphones that slide into your ears. Those made me very happy. Another slight problem is the location of the batteries. You actually have to remove the CD from the discMan to switch the batteries. BUT you won't have to switch those batteries too often, so it's not really that big of a problem. I think the thing that bothers me the most about Phil is the display's lack of light. It was quite difficult to find the right buttons to push when it's dark and there's no light -- but that's easy to get used to. Now I'm an expert.
The Good: The reason I love Phil so much is because Phil treats me real good. Phil makes me happy. Phil knows what it is: a simple discMan. It's not trying too hard to be something it's not, and doesn't have to. That's a quality I look for in a discMan. Phil doesn't skip at all when I go jogging. That makes me happy. Phil's tiny and cute and blue, not big and bulky and boring. That also makes me happy. And Phil's ability to last on long trips never ceases to amaze me. Phil doesn't suck the life out of batteries like SOME discmen I know. As my friends are begging people for spare batteries, I give Phil a proud smile. And when there are no more spare batteries and they are unable to listen to their discmen, I silently whisper to MY discMan, "You are the best" . . . 'Cause Phil is.

Mmmmmm shiny! heheHowever, there's an identical model which is metallic silver called the Sony D-EG7, which came out mid/late 1999. It still features the adjustable strap and these great street - style headphones that wrap behind your head.
Overall, the construction of the D-EG3, being the same as the D-EG7, is GREAT. A bit of a battery muncher but otherwise, it offers great bass, killer anti - skip technology (even when I'm running to the bus in the morning!) and a great design which unfortunately attracts a bit too much attention in the big city.
I've had mine nearly 2 years now, and it's still in great shape, even though I use it up to two hours a day, every day. Its construction and hard rubber base has helped it to stand being dropped, scratched, smashed between two steel doors, and even stepped on by a Rottweiler.
Oustanding
Good things come in small packages!!The ESP anti-skip protection really works: this discman rareley skips, so you can always hear the deep bass and treble of the music.
Just recently, I replaced the headphones that come with the discman (which are actually quite good, dispite the distortion of the sound when you turn the volume up past 7) with a pair of wraparound-style headphones. They're very nice, exept, they deliver almost the same sound as the other ones.
Over all this a really great discman. I would reccomend it to all of my friends.
