CHALK UP ANOTHER ONE FOR PHILIPS
I bought this Boom Box and the only problem I found is that the place where the CD goes don't have enough room for your fingers so you can pick up your CD by the edges and not toughing the sides. Other then that this thing is really good for your money. So chalk up another one for Philips, a very good product.

Above and beyond what I expected!
This is a great stereo boombox! the best I have ever owned. The sound is perfect and crystal clear. The design of it is great. there is alot of quality here. You get alot of quality for your money. I highly recommend this stereo and the products of this company.

Excellent and priced right
This is an excellent boom box for the price. It does everything well and the sound quality is great. The dynamic bass boost is exceptional- the sound is very deep and clear whether you're playing the radio, tape, or a CD. Radio reception is also very good and it's great at rejecting interference from strong stations. The tuner is so selective, especially on FM, that some close stations come in as clearly as in a car. I previously had a Sanyo boombox and liked it, but I wanted to upgrade to something better, and when I heard this one I had to buy it. The only thing that is strange is that there's no window on the tape deck and the CD player shows only the track number, not the time. But I've noticed that many other boom boxes in this price range are the same way. Overall this is an excellent boom box. It's the first Philips product I have purchased, and I'm sure it won't be the last. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's looking for a great-sounding boom box and doesn't want to spend a lot.

Great sound and commodity. But is it reliable?
I had been waiting for such a CD player for a long time, and it was worth it as it sounds great and is very user friendly. I do love the random playing and was about to buy a second one when some trouble stopped me. After less than a year the title, best track selection and custom file memory just vanished away twice in very little time. I had to have it repaired three times to solve the problem. When the memory seemed to be OK, it finally failed again after 10 or 11 months and this time I have no guarantee. It is a pity because the other features are fantastic and it would have been a great buy without these problems.

Excellent features for the price.
After nearly forgetting I had a CD player because the CD I wanted to listen to was never loaded when I wanted it, I decided to go for a jukebox style of player. This one had the most features (301 discs, 10 custom groups, 50 track best song memory, easy disc/artist naming) of any of the other players I looked at. The signal-to-noise ratio is better in some more pricey models, but I cannot tell the difference and they didn't have the features this one does.

Truly the BEST investment in AUDIO pleasure
I have a BIG CD collection with over 800 discs. I enjoy many styles and like to mix them up a bit to keep 'em interesting. I enjoy listening to Janis Joplin followed by RAGE Against the Machine followed by the Chemical Brothers and then Stan Getz followed by KID ROCK. I love it ALL and this thing plays it the way I like it. I can select my BLUES JAMS catagory and listen to random blues tunes, or open it up to the entire enchilada and hear... I don't KNOW what. It's FANTASTIC!!! I love it so much I'm buying a second one to link with the first and create a 600 disc system. It's THAT good. I also live on a small Island out in the Pacific with no radio to speak of, so I just turn on my stereo and hit the random button. I hear what I like, 'cause I bought the CD's, and it's always a surprise. I can't say enough about this component. If you're thinking about buying one, JUST DO IT.

Excellent Discman
Great lightweight discman, created by Sony. It's just great, use it when I walk to school, at work, and it's just perfect. The only thing that is lacking is the cd-case, and the remote control. The MD-optical cable is rather easy to obtain, but the remote control is very hard to find. If anyone knows where I can obtain it, I'll greatly appreciate it.

Current CD to Minidisc Steal!!!
This CD player is awesome!!! It is the cheapest CD player (the "used" ones are actually factory sealed) with an optical out. I only intended to use it to digitally send sonds to my minidisc player, but it has great volume (much more than what you would expect from a portable) and the sound quality and build are top notch. I am so shocked that I got this new CD player for "so little".
If you are a minidisc owner, pick this up immediately!

good gift present
I got this cd player for Christmas from my parents and i don't think they could have picked a better one. It was alot like my old cd player but so much better. I like how it's so slim and fits into some of my pockets. Also I LOVE all the features on the D-E551. And the resume was such a good idea. This is the BEST cd player I have ever had and would buy it for anyone who loves to listen music.

CD Play & Mechanical Problems...
I've had this unit about 2.5 years (it was one of the first MP3 car audio units out). It's very pretty (especially at night), and plays well (except the FM tuner seems a bit weak), has good sound, nice scrolling display of MP3 ID3 tags, etc.

However I started having CD/MP3 read problems(?) and mechanical CD carrier problems, just after the unit passed its warantee limit.. At first, the unit started rejecting MP3 & CD disks- after sucking the disk in, it would think for a bit, then spit it out again with "Error" on the display- even if I had been playing that same CD earlier the same day. When it fell into this mode, it would reject *any* CD inserted (even brand new factory audio CDs), until I hit the "Reset" button (which also resets the clock, radio station presets, and all other personal audio settings). After "Reset", things would be OK for a while- then the same scenario would recur some weeks later, after trying to insert a another CD. "Reset" again, to fix.

In the past year, this has started occurring more frequently, until finally I had to "Reset" *every* time I tried to change CD's. I often had to try "Reset" *many* times, before I could get the unit to accept a CD. (No point in trying to set the clock, radio stations, or other personal audio settings any more- I knew they would be reset to defaults the next time I wanted to change CDs)

Now, in the past month, I have had problems getting the CD to eject- I can see the CD start to pop out of the drive, but the unit face does not move out of the way, to allow the CD to eject (this unit has a nifty moveable motorized "face", that must drop out of the way, for access to the CD drive). The CD is trapped behind the face, and cannot be removed from the unit. "Reset" does not help with this. I finally found a reference in the manual about this error- saying to press the eject and the "tilt face" button at the same time- this didn't work, but I found that if I physically *pulled* the face with great force, while pushing these two buttons, I could get the face out of the way, in order to remove the old CD...

I'm currently shopping for a simpler, more robust CD/MP3 player for my car...

Great head unit!
I've been using one of these for the past couple of months, and it's got everything that I wanted...and then some!!

I cant live without it!
I've had my kd-sh99 for about a year now. When i first got it, I was one of the people who had the problem of the deck skipping. it would blank out for a few seconds and it was a gamble each time whether or not it will pick up again or if you had to eject the disk and try again. So i sent up to denver to be repaired, 6 weeks later i recieved it back and it has been great ever since. The technician said JVC had a bad batch of optical units, I happened to get one of those. A friend of mine bought this same deck and it worked flawlessly for him too.

I'm telling you, once you get a deck that can read MP3's you will never go back. I have 1 CD with 12 full punk albums on it, how cool is that! it is like having a 12 CD changer in your car, but much better. It reads ID3 tags and displays them up front up to 32 characters, it also reads CD-Text if the cd is programmed with it.

But yeah, so far it has worked wonderfully. no skips, nothin. just lots and lots of great music. it has a great random feature, it reads across the entire disc into every folder. some players only randomize in the current folder. it starts playing the mp3s where you last left off just like a regular CD. it only takes a second or two longer. it has a built in amp at 60watts, and a subwoofer control. you will notice your CDs will be a bit hot comming out of the player because of it, but it doesnt hurt them. the internal amp can also be turned off. switching folders on the CDR is very very easy of you burn it right. just prefix the folders with 01, 02, 03, etc and use the 1-12 radio preset buttons to switch. name the songs prefixed with 01,02,03 etc to play them in that order, otherwise it plays them alphabetically by ID3 tag. it has a motorized faceplate that is really cool. this deck has much more options and bells and whistles than any other deck in its price range. it would take forever to go through all the features. just know that it is the best one out there, i did a lot of searching before hand, but of course that was a year ago.

If i lost this, i most likely buy it again. the only reason I wouldnt is if they had a newer model! this is a purchase you will not regret.

Flimsee, not worth the money
This CD player is not worth the price, it has okay sound. I had mine for a couple of mounths when the top broke off. That was fine the warrany covered it, but 1 year latter the same thing happened. Anoother thing I would charge my batteries over night and they would only last a couple of hours.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!
I'm getting ready to buy a second one for a backup - I never want to be without this. I hike every day and am very very hard on things. This CD player will hold up and the rechargeable battery feature is fabulous. I never worry about my batteries - just plug it in when I get home. It's also very light and has fantastic sound. Buy it! Don't screw around looking at all the others if what you need is a good basic CD ploayer that you can take with you.

Bought it in Japan
I bought this cd player last year in Japan (it came with more accessories - remote, worldwide adaptor, waterproof case, etc) and it is awesome! I use it to jog with and have it most of the time hooked up to this old stereo of mine to use the speakers on it (the cd player on the stereo broke a while ago).

The batteries are really nifty, super thin, and last a long time. This is the thinnest cd discman I've ever seen - thinner than all the others I saw in Japan, too. The sound is great no matter what headphones you use. Definitely worth buying!

Excellent for Long Road Trips
We purchased the Panasonic SL-S362C Portable with Remote because we were headed on a 2,000 mile trip with our family of six and we can never find appropriate radio stations as we travel. We had read other reviews and weren't sure we needed the remote, but liked the price. The remote was a life saver. We velcroed it to the dashboard within both driver and passenger reach and put the player behind the 4WD shifter on the floor. The only time we had to reach for the player was to change the CD. We found the player very durable considering the jostling around stuff that you get when taking supplies to munch, read etc on a long trip like that. Also, the player is not very sensitive at all. We drove a couple of times for hours in our 4WD older style Suburban before we even realized the anti-shock wasn't on. The first time was on the back roads where we lived, that are know for twists, turns and bumps. We have never purchased a portable CD player before, and it looks like we won't have to again for a long time.

An Excellent Buy
You get a durable, very ergonomic CD player. The display illuminates when an external DC source is plugged in. A car adapter kit and a wireless infrared remote control are included. Sound wise, the only portable CD players which can top it are the more expensive, less ergonomic 460/470/850 models. However, you're trading all those goodies for a higher price and just slightly more focus in the bass. I recommend buying one of these Panasonics, an external rechargeable jewel-case-shaped CD Battery..., a CD Washer carrying case..., and some better headphones (most portable CD players come bundled with lousy ones). I think you'll be very pleased with the results.

Panasonic SL-S362C Portable CD Player
I have owned this CD player for about two weeks now and have not experienced any of the problems mentioned by the others... I bought the CD player with a little caution flag and as soon as I got it tested it out. Battery life is excelent, actually better if the anti-skip feature is turned on. I do a lot of off-roading (Rocky Mtns. and all) and it hasn't skipped once. I do make many of my own compilation CDs and have not had any trouble with CD-RWs or CD-Rs. The remote works fine but it's not realy necessary (half the time you're holding the player in your hand anyway so it's just a gimick for the gadget adicts like me). The one thing I have noticed is the player's poor tollerance of scratched CDs, but then again CDs need to be taken care of so it's not Panasonic's fault. As for sound quality, Panasonic's supplied headphones leave much to be desired in terms of music clarity, but replace those with a high quality pair from Sony or Koss and the improvement is mind-boggling.

This is definitely the best portable CD player I have ever bought and Amazon gave me an excelent deal. If you love high-quality music on the go, definitely take this Panasonic into consideration.

fm reception a little troublesome
It is a great looking cd player .the esp mode works well. It doesn't have a loud enough volume. I live in a large midwest city and it never really locks a good signal.

A Solid Portable CD Player
This player is very feature-packed: aside from being "jogproof", it features AM/FM radio w/ 30 presets, Clock, Alarm, Line-output, & 2 levels of digital bass boost. Sound quality is excellent, especially for the price of the player. Even the stock headphones that come with the player aren't awful. Only one annoying aspect of this model: the high-pitched beep it makes (via the heaphones) when you press a button, such as switching the track or changing the bass settings, which is kind of disruptive to the music and a tad irritating to the ears. If that doesn't bother you, this player is well worth the money. Only other concern I have is durability: something about it feels flimsly, though only time will tell. Frankly, I'm thankful those are the only two negative points I've noticed - as portable CD players seem to decline in just about every aspect except for anti-skip protection every single year. The fact that this Philips player has line-out capabilities (ie, can be connected to a stereo system) was enough to sell me, as so few lower-priced models have this anymore. Definitely a good deal you should consider.

Jimmy's Experienced Review
OK I have had many cd players, or disc men, or portable CD players or whatever you want to call them, before. This is the best i have had yet. The sound is rich, and the double dynamic boost bass (digital DBB) tottaly enriches the sound giving you some of the best sound you can get. They DO NOT lie when they say "JOG PROOF." I once dropped this player on the floor in the car on a dirt road, and i still did not miss a single not, the player did not skip what so ever with the 45 ESP on. It includes a very useful clock, and it even has an alarm!! You can have a cd turn on when the alarm goes off, or you can have a beeping noise go off and some other options as well. The radio is very easy to use with the obvious RADIO-BAND button to turn it on, and the very simple up and down arrows for the DIGITAL TUNER, and there are another set of arrows on the other side of the very easy to read LCD screen to change songs or tracks as well as fast forward or rewind them. The LCD screen provides the icon for the Digital DBB, an icon for the 45 ESP and a battery diagram to show how much battery power you have left. It also shows the track or song number and the time of the track. When having the radio function on it shows the same icons but instead of the trach number and time it has the station (EXAMPLE. 92.3) it also shows if it is a preset, and if it is not you have th option of making it one and 29 other stations as well, it also shows wether it is an FM or AM station. The thing i love about this player is that you can program songs off a CD onto the player!! This player is definetly worth the money, with its many options and functions, and great sound. The headphones that come with the player are very good as well, they are very comfortable on the ears, and are very durable. I highly recomend this player to anybody who loves high quality sound, and listens to it for quite a while. The batteries last for a very long time, and so that you don't waste battery power it has a hold switch so the player does not turn on while in a backpack or some place like that, when not wanted to. It also has a resume switch so you dont have to start a song over when you have to turn it off for some reason. You could pause it and leave it at the spot, but again that would waste battery power. To sum it all up this is an amazing player and i very, very highly recomend it to all music lovers like me. The sound is great, the 45 second ESP is incredible, it has many options and functions, and they include bettery power saving functions to help save you money. ...
I hope this review is helpful to you in your decision making.

a 5 MD CHANGER?---enough said!
I just bought this system, and it totally rocks! I agree with other reviewers that the included Sony speakers produce poor sound quality. But once I hooked up a pair of Infinity RS-1s, the sound is amazing! Add a small subwoofer and it can only get better. The best reason to get this system is for the 5 MD changer. WOW! Very easy to use, and compliments my MD home deck and portable player. Get into MD now and stop using tapes. Much easier to use MDs than CD-Rs, as well.

Enough
It's a nice box with sad speakers. They sound nice, butseriously, 25 watt per channel? That is pretty low. My computersystem puts out much and it was a $50 Cambridge Sub System mixed with Aiwa sats, $70, total. this thing is around 200 and gives the same sound. Go figure. If you want a small, office box, okay. If you want real sound (if you have the cash), buy this and then buy some real speakers to go with this awesome changer combo box. That would be a good deal. END

Complex but Competent
Sounds great, works great. It's taken me about a week to get comfortable with all the controls and the remote, but I'm now able to use the system to do whatever I want in terms of recording and playback. Would ultimately have liked a second set of speaker jacks, but nothing is perfect. Throw away those cassettes! MiniDisc is definitely the future of recordable, portable audio.

Great Cd Player!
If you're looking for value, quality and name, get this cd player. It has it all. First of all, the cd player looks fantastic. It's a total eye grabber, i can't go anywhere w/o anyone asking me what it is. The quality of the cd player is really good, it's got a shiny 'metallic' look for the top, and has a hard durable plastic for the bottom. Battery life is AWESOME on this cd player. I used duracell ultra's and the cd player lasted me for well over a week. I've owned quite a few cd players, and this one has been my best one. My original intent was to look for battery life and anti-shock. I move around a lot and need music constantly so I picked this one out and it turned out perfect. There are a couple of downsides though. As with all anti-shock cd players, you must wait the designated amount of time for the cd player to become buffered before you can hold the cd player and not get any skips. So i've got to wait 40 seconds before i can listen to my music w/o skipping, and trust me, it's well worth those 40 seconds because w/o the anti skip, this cd player isn't worth the 140 bucks. Another thing is that it's not digital, so it doesn't work with the latest 'remotes' that plug into minidisc players or regular headphones. Thats about it, great cd player though!

It's Great!
Despite the comments by one, everyone loves thier player. I take mine everywhere. It has never skipped ( Even when I drop it! Oops!) ,and the finish is still there. I have had it for a year, and still haven't had to change the batteries. All of it's functions are great! Plus, it gives off great sound! It's size is also fantastic. In most of my pants , it can actually fit in the pockets. The headphones aren't the greatest, but who cares? This is the best you can get for your money.

worth every peeny
i love mine it is very clear and easy to operate it is worth it's hefty price tag. i would suggest it if you want a great cd payer

Great DVD Player, but limited lifespan
I bought this DVD Player almost a year ago. I bought it to replace the Panasonic 5 Disc changer that I put in my basement. The Panasonic did not have the picture quality that I need given my 55" high definition TV so I thought I'd try a Sony. It worked great for the entire year, but now it won't play any DVDs. About two weeks ago, I started having trouble playing a DVD in one or two of the five disc spots, but if I switched them around, I could get it to work. Now I can't play any DVDs on it. I was very happy with the player and I do use it several times a week, but it should last more than a year.

No digital SACD output.
Great DVD image quality and sound. Love the changer. I was replacing a 1999 Sony player that finally died.

The exciting new feature for me was SACD 5.1 support. Unfortunately it did not work. SACD is not supported through the digital out of this player. Since my Bose Lifestyle supports 5.1 through digtal only I have to play SACD through my tv.

I'm a little upset because I felt this issue was hidden deep in the manual and never would have expected such a limitation.

Very good cd sound and dvd performance for the price
I bought the unit recently and cds sound better than they ever did before. For the price, imho this unit is hard to beat. And you get all of the advantages of a carousel holding five discs.
