somewhat unsatisfactory
I like the overall look and feel of this portable cd-player, however, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. The headphones themselves are quite a neat idea with the pseudo-subwoofer in the back, but it doesn't usually add to the bass and the earbud-like protrusions themselves don't fit well enough to have much bass or clarity on their own. The main problem with the sound however, comes from the headphone jack itself. Basically, the headphone jack on this model seems to have a somewhat poor power output and it distorts the sound very easily, even at low volumes. Compared to other panasonic portable cd-players, the sound output is really quite poor. Even with the use of a headphone amp the sound still distorts very easily.

Like metal case, sounds great BUT...
I ordered this cd player to use while jogging and also for my pre-teen kids to use occasionally. I am really happy with it. It seems really well-made and durable. That said, every bad thing all the reviewers said about the headphones is true. They are tortuously painful. I am using my 15.00 Sony headphones from my cassette player instead and they are fine. I think that for the price this cd player is a great deal!

Wonderful
This is a wonderful CD player that is very sturdy, never skips, and is easy to use while jogging, walking, etc. The battery life is also solid. I agree the headphones could be be better, and in my area the fm reception is not particularly strong, but these are small quibbles....Buy it, you won't regret it.

Too much to paid for ordinary headphones
This Headphones are quit good looking, but thats all what they have.No spectacular sound and the cord it's too short
they don't have the extra Bass feature as the manufactures said.
They are overpriced()They should cos't about... dollars for the final costumer.

A little expensive but overall very nice headphones.
The only problem I have with the headphones is the cord is to short. There is very little sound escaping out and almost no sound gets in contrary to other reviews. I would absolutley wear these in a library or even while taking an exam. Overall I'm very happy with them.

good phones for price, but not quiet
I'd like to say that the 'phones are good. they look pretty cool and are fairly comfortable with the mesh headband. the folding option is nice too for travelling. the only thing I have against it is that they don't keep the sound in at all. contradictory to what the manufacturer's info said, I wouldn't use them in a Library. They keep the sound out though. I ended up returning them because I bought them for use after finals when we sit and do nothing or when I take the subway to classes, but the sound just doesn't stay contained. I blame it on the mesh screen on the back. It's like they were enginered to let everyone else hear the same song you're listening to.

That's just my two cents though.

Disappointing
I had a pair of Sennheisers back in the 70's which were outstanding. So, when I needed to get some headphones to upgrade my old Walkman headphones, I assumed Sennheisers would be a sure bet. How wrong I was. While the bass was an improvement over my old phones, the mids and highs were a big disappointment, sounding muted, cloudy and just plain bad. The other sad news is that they aren't very comfortable. They squeeze my ears with a little too much force. I actually prefer using the ...headphones that came with the Walkman because at least the highs can be heard and they are comfortable to wear.

Alas, my quest for lightweight, slim headphones with great sound continues...

Good portables
I do not actually own the HD56. The model that I do own is the little brother of the Sennheiser Headphone family, the HD26. However, Amazon do not stock this headphone, so I have decided to review this one since it is the most similar.

I actually own three Sennheiser headphones; the HD26, HD433 and the HD570. This was the first good headphones I had. They are exceptionally good portables and are perfect for the portable HiFi enthusiest.

I will add however, that they are by far not the best headphones Sennheiser have ever made. Quite the contrary; you can get far better headphones made by this company. Anyone who knows anything about Sennheiser would know that the 500 series, 600 series and the Orpheus are the best peahphones available, and I would suggest getting the HD570 if you are want headphones that are exceptional but good value, and the HD600 if you want the best. However these models are not for portables. If you are looking for something more practical, I would recommend that you purchase some any of the 400 series headphones over this one, but if you are looking for a bargain price entry level headphone, this is the one for you.

Smooth sound
I use the headphones with my Frontier Labs MP3 player while I'm working out at the gym. I've used the original headphones that came with the player as well as other headphones from Sony and Aiwa. The Sennheisers are by far the best and smoothest sounding ones and the bass is very strong and controlled. Given the size and price of the phones, I feel that they are an excellent value.

Worth the price
This review is on the Sony MDR-IF240R not MDR-IF240RK, not sure if there's any difference. I needed a wireless headphone for the bedroom because I watch TV over 2 hours every night while my wife sleeps and about 2 hours early in the morning. I've also owned a wireless Sennheiser HDR60 and a wired Panasonic RP-HT970 Vibration Series Headphone. The Sennheiser worked fine, but their rechargeable battery (two included) would only last me about two days. I always had one recharging so I could swap it out, but it was still annoying to have it cut out in the middle of a program. After a year one of the batteries wouldn't hold a charge any more and when I saw how much a replacement battery cost, I decided to buy the Panasonic. Because it was wired, the Panasonic RP-HT970 sounded great, especially the bass effects with DVD's. It was very comfortable and I would still be using it, if I hadn't tripped on the cable and broke it. It had also been an obstacle for my wife when she had to walk across the room.

I decided to go wireless again and bought the Sony MDR-IF240R after reading reviews. I wanted a headphone that used standard batteries and wouldn't need constant replacing. I have cordless phones and a wireless PC network, so I decided having no interference using infrared was better than having the ability to go room to room using other technology. Since I only used it for TV viewing, I was willing to accept decent, if not great, sound quality. This headphone met all my requirements. I put in one standard AAA battery instead of the rechargeable battery that came with it and I haven't had to change it in over two weeks of constant use (4 hours/day).

The headphones are mostly plastic and look a bit cheap. They are fairly comfortable, but if I tilt my head, they will fall off because the foam cushions are flat rather than cupped like the Sennheiser and the headband is rather flimsy. That would be my biggest complaint. Sony should also have provided a longer cable for the transmitter to allow more flexibility in placement. Sound quality is fine for TV viewing, but it can't compare to the quality of a wired headphone like the Panasonic which makes you feel like you're actually in a movie when played on DVD.

I have perfect reception using it at 12 feet and I've walked 45 degrees to the left and right without any loss. If something comes between the headphone and the transmitter, it will cut out, so positioning is very important. You can eliminate the hiss that others have mentioned, if you turn up the volume on the sound source (e.g. TV or Receiver) rather than turning up the volume control on the headphone. On the Sennheiser there was a tuning control, which I had to fiddle with in order to receive a signal, but the Sony doesn't have or need one.

In conclusion, this headphone met all my expectations, the price was reasonable and I would recommend it to others until someone comes out without something that has better sound quality and excellent battery life.

Sound quality - 4 stars (compared to other wireless)
Battery life - 5 stars
Range - 4 stars
Comfort - 4 stars

Good Infrared Headphones
These are good infrared headphones. Cons: infrared headphones have limited range. Pros: infrared interference has limited range! That is, you don't have to worry about your neighbor creating some signal that interferes with your headphones. Your walls, windows, etc are enough to block the interference. But the downside is that the device has limited field of view (only plus/minus 45 degrees from the stand, although you can rotate the transmitter to point that field of view where you want it). Range is not an issue; the headphones work well 20-30 feet to the back wall of my room. The signal doesn't go through walls so your headphones go silent if you go to the next room. Holding a newspaper or magazine high in front of your face is enough to make the signal cut out, too. Turning your head back and forth doesn't cause any reception problems (except when you turn *exactly* 90 degrees).

But I am very happy to have range and field of view limitations in exchange for interference-free reception. Another reviewer complained about an annoying hiss: this only occurs when you turn your TV down low and then crank up the headphone amplification (this is because the transmitter is then sending out such a small signal that the transmission noise is almost as large as the signal). Simply keep your TV volume high and the headphones amplification low and you will not be able to hear any hiss or static. To my untrained ears, they sound as good as corded headphones.

Lightweight, Comfortable, Functional, and Cute
I use them in a bedroom for TV, stereo, and PC; range has not been an issue at all. If you chiefly want range, buy RF (radio frequency) 'phones. I've owned these for a good three months with no more than the initial charge (using them an avg of 2hrs/wk)! I just lay them over the stand instead of in the upright charge position.

Sound quality is good; I notice no degradation, only the change in audio channel type. They are comfortable. I don't see a drawback to the top part resting on your head like normal 'phones do. The earpads are like a Walkman's, not the "plushy" kind that make your ears warm in a short time. Small and lightweight like Walkman 'phones, this item passes every test of functionality and looks good doing it!

not good for folks with little ears
The sound was okay but I couldn't keep the things on my ears! They clear the top of my ear by nearly a half inch and keep falling off. I won't skimp on headphones next time...

These will do.
These pair of headphones are great if you want better ones than the those that come with your player. It stays on really well. You wrap them around your ear and they won't come off easily. Great for working out and outdoor activities. You still get a sense of hearing of the outside world while having these on, so they won't be too much of a distraction. The price is fair as well. However, they aren't the greatest in sound quality. Hardly any bass comes out and the sounds do leak out. The high sounds aren't high enough, and the lows aren't low enough either. All in all, a good "starters" headphones that you can upgrade later when you want to hear music in all its glory.

these are ok but have some bad things
These are good but they kinda hurt at first but u get used to them after that there fine the quility is good for the price i would get them but you can get some more better head phones for a little more money

just plain horible....
im telling u ppl, dont buy this system. the anti-skip sucks. it wont even play a cd. i have to go out and buy more batteries and still, nothin. and when it does work, it shuts off in the middle of the song and then...nothing. well, at least hank god for am/fm.

Eh So-So
For the money I paid for it I am not too happy. I could have gotten something else and better. It's not slim, at least by 2001 standards. It eats batteries like crazy, not to mention the fac that the batteries compartment is inside the cover. Anti-shock is sometimes completely useless. What I like about it is ease of use, except for battery replacement, and several different functions. I would say shop around.

Great product
I love this CD player...except the headphones are jumpy at times...staticy like. Depends if you hit them or something...the radio reception is great, clear sounding. The CD player is awesome! It has a great sound. In my opinion, this is a great product!

Terrible Reception
I returned this headset after 5 minutes of use. AM and FM reception are horrible despite antenna. Could not listen to a strong local station without constantly turning my head. Very disappointed.

Outstanding headphone - the best on the market today!
This is by the far the best AM/FM headphone radio I've owned and I have owned quite a few. I searched every electronic store in my area trying to find a headphone like this and could only find it through amazon.com.

The clarity of the radio reception is excellent. Having 20 preset stations makes it so easy to switch stations when you don't like the song playing on the current station. This is also the most comfortable headphone radio I've had. I can wear it for hours and it never gets uncomfortable. I also can't deal with having the wired headphones or the ones you wear on your arm, so this one is ideal.

I actually liked this headphone so much I bought two more, one to keep at work and one to give to my husband. He likes it as much as I do.

For the people who gave this product such poor ratings, you must be abusive with your things. I use my headphone so much and switch stations constantly and I have never had any problems with it.

I highly recommend this headphone for anyone wanting a reliable, comfortable, great reception radio, with no wires and the ease of changing stations at the touch of a button.

FINALLY, A GOOD RADIO THAT IS COMFORTABLE!
Until I came across this radio, I was beginning to think I would not find one that would work for me. I tried 2 different models of headband radios that made the skin on my ears sore within the first hour of wearing them. I returned those radios. The Sony SRF-HM33 is very comfortable, even after wearing it all afternoon. It is durably constructed. It fits loosely on my head, which is okay, since I just listen to news and music while working. Even though I work in a basement, the reception is not static and the stereo sound is great. This radio has a good antenna.

horrible
They look sleek. Unfortunately, that is the only positive I can say about these headphones. They have terrible sound, annoying highs and bad bass. But what can you expect for this price. The worst about these headphones is that they leak way too much. You can hear yourself dropping a needle wearing these and that is not fun while listening to music. Get the KOSS KSC 35. They are amazing.

Ok headphones, but where is the sound quality?
Overall these headphones are ok, but they don't perform as well as other headphones within this price range. The clips aren't too bad and feel like the headphones should be pretty good when you put them on, however the sound that comes out of these is hardly what you would expect. The high end isn't very clean sounding and the bass struggles to come out despite the specs that these headphones have on paper. Overall, I suppose that if you just like the looks of the headphones then they might be right for you, but if you want sound quality the sony's look cool and sound good while the koss ksc-50 um, sounds good. :)

OK
These headphones look real neat. They were kinda hard to learn to put them on at first, but were easy after. These headphones are OK sound in the highs and lows. They have some leakage problems with the sound, becuase they aren't right up to your ears, but kinda hang. The bad part I do not like about this is that these headphones don't feel right when they are on. They just don't feel right, they don't feel like there even on, and if they did, feel like there gonna fall off. Overall this was an alright pair of headphones. ....

A waste of money
I bought these to run with but I'm not able to get a snug fit. I've tried to bend them to fit but no luck. They keep falling off. As with all headphones of this type the sound is not very good. I've bought much cheeper headphones with sportclip which work for the purpose of running. These do not! Atleast not for me.

Good for the price, but not a superb value
I bought these to replace some Sony clipon headphones that died. For the price I got them at ($9.99), they work wonderfully. They are very comfortable, the foam is somewhat durable, unlike other brands, and they won't fall out of your ear like earbuds usually do. The clips are easily adjustable to fit however large your ear is. These headphones are also VERY portable with a small mp3 player. The red/silver combo looks very sharp and nice also.

The sound quality is good for the price, but is not very good if you are a picky audiophile. The sound is quite tinny, and you end up pressing them very far into your ear if you really want to hear the bass. Volume doesn't go very high either before becoming indistinguishable.

I've been using (and abusing) my set for about 6 months now with my Sony Discman CD player (on usually pretty high volume), and neither side has lost volume, the ear foam is still in good shape, and nothing is broken or physically or mechanically wrong with it. If you are looking for a true audio experience I would spend a little bit more and buy some better quality headphones, such as the Sony MDR-G72 collapsable behind the neck headphones.

I give these about a 3 and 1/2 stars, but since that isn't an option I'll just round up to 4 stars. The amazon price of $12 is fairly competitive.

Jared

These kick!
First of all, just so you know, I am NOT an audiophile. I'm simply a person with a two-hour commute each way who likes to keep her ears busy with music and audiobooks. I recently purchased an Ipod, and, after getting tired of having the earbuds fall out, purchased these to replace those that came with the Ipod. I love them. Not being an audiophile, I would hesitate to rave about the sound, but I have had NO complaints with it whatsoever. The sound is loud enough, clear enough, and true enough, to come through richly and warmly even on a noisy bus. They don't tend to fall off (even if I fall asleep in them), and they take up no space in my already packed purse. I highly recommend these.

sound is not really all that great, and THEY HURT
I have these and I dont wear them much. They sound like the headphones that come with cd players, and thats not good. Also these hurt after wearing them for awhile, and they REALLY HURT WHEN YOU WEAR GLASSES, and I wear glasses. The only good thing is they look cool. Dont buy these, buy somethng that goes in your ear.

sound good but crap
I have to buy a new pair every 6 months. I like these headphones for the fact that there cheap and sound decent. Its true these do cause your ears to hurt if you wear them to long, and if you fall alseep with them on, forget it. The one time I did it, I had pain in my ears the whole next day. And as I said befor I have to buy these often from poor design, this time I am going to spend the extra money and get a good pair that will last a couple years instead of spending the same amount of money replacing these.

Great for the price!
For half the price of a designer keychain, you can get these amazing headphones! They came with my Sony CD player, also an awesome buy. I was instantly satisfied! The acoustics made me feel like I was enveloped in sound, no matter how old the music was or how ancient the recording equipment was. They wrap arond your ear and never slip, get stuck in your hair, or slide off your face, making them perfect for listening to during sports.

This product is not without cons, of course, and after almost a year of heavy use and tugging, the wire is finally somewhat detached, playing warped noises in place of some layers of the songs, like their vocals. Also, the rubber pieces pinch your ears noticeably after hours of use. Lastly, their foam bits come off, though this does not subtract for the sound quality.

Overall, this product still deserves five stars, both because customers should not be deterred by exaggerated poor reviews or quips about this product. These headphones are the best that your twenty can buy, rivaling much more expensive models.
