JVC's XL-PM30 is more than just a CD player, although it is a perfectly fine CD player. The XL-PM30 can also play MP3 and Windows Media Audio files.
The XL-PM30 has a very clear display that will show MP3 text with ID3 tag, segment, track, and title data. The CD player has the usual assortment of playback features: repeat, intro scan, and random play, in addition to a 20-track program memory.
This is a very stable player with 45 seconds of antiskip protection for a CD and an incredible 140 seconds for an MP3 disc. It would take a massive earthquake to disrupt the XL-PM30. Designed with efficiency in mind, it will playback CDs for 22 hours or MP3 discs for 15 hours with alkaline batteries installed.
It comes with very comfortable headphones, which are actually a neckband with a wrap-around style and attached remote control. The headphones sound good, although the Hyper Bass provided a nice boost to the lower frequencies.
This is a very functional player that is ready for all of the best sounding formats.

A good MP3 player and a great valueAs far as the player goes, it is compact with adequate volume and sharp display. I was even able to use it in my car with a cassette adapter. The earphones are buds and may be uncomfortable if you aren't used to them.
You have the choice of purchasing the JumpGear with the 64MB starter memory or purchasing it without memory and ordering the JumpDrive seperately. Even though I got it with the memory I found that 64mb wasn't enough to hold an entire album. The prices on larger capacity JumpDrives are coming down and you can purchase 128mb, 256mb, or 512mb for a better value.
The JumpGear MP3 player is one of the best deals around.

Better than MUVOIts bigger than the Muvo, but not by much... its probably slightly bigger than a cigarette lighter. The biggest bonus is the solid-state 256MB drive. Instead of 20-30 songs on the Muvo, I can save 50-60 songs on the Magic Star, a definite bonus for those with long commutes. It plugs into your USB port and is detected as another drive. Moving files is as easy as drag-and-drop. You can also save other filetypes on here, but I haven't used it for that function. It can also be used with a proprietary PIM program (kinda like a palm pilot), but I haven't used that either. Another HUGE bonus is that the unit battery is RECHARGEABLE. It recharges when plugged into your USB port, and only takes abt 1.5 hr to get a full charge. I can't believe how much I spent on batteries with my Muvo! I didn't bother with the earbuds that came with the unit; I just used my own. The sound is great, no-frills.
Controls are easy enough. All functions are controlled by one single jog dial. Push it to turn on, toggle back and forth to advance/go back, etc. Only drawback is that the jogdial is also used to control volume. You need to push and hold the dial forward to increase volume. Changing the volume is a little tricky, but you get used to it. The unit also has a built in metal clip that can be used for a lanyard, shirt pocket, or your belt.
Overall, this player is perfect for commuters and gym-bunnies who want something small, loads of memory, and aren't concerned with displays or extra functionality beyond playing mp3s.

The best protection for your iPod

Great Concept, Great ImplementationThis thing is amazing. About the size of a pack of gum, it not only has an excellent FM tuner, it'll store and play about 3 CDs worth of music files too. It couldn't be easier to load them -- the Mega Stick has a USB jack on one end which you simply plug into your computer. It is then recognized as a "removable hard drive" -- simply move the files you want to the Stick and away you go.
The earbuds sound great too, in a pretty unique around-the-neck yoke which keeps the whole thing comfortable.
Runs on a single AAA battery. No moving parts so it seems to run many, many hours on a battery. I'm still waiting for my replacement battery to die -- the one it came with (who knows how old it was?) lasted about a week of intense use. Another good thing, removing and replacing the battery didn't cause anything to be lost.
In all, an excellently designed product. I'm totally happy with it.
