Decent bang for the buck!
Great Speakers for the priceI have plugged it into a surge protector and kept the wires away from other electrical equipment, but still some disturbance persists. But it is not a big problem, because it only happens when the cellphone rings near the speakers.
These are definitely a great buy.
Pros:
1. Awesome sound. Good clarity and bass
2. Sleek looks
3. Goes perfect with Dell Flat LCD monitors. Even the silver matches with the Flat Panel's silver stand. The speakers are pretty might
4. Great buy for the price.
Cons:
1. Some static. But if you keep your cellphone far away, it is minimal

too much midbass emphasis, bloated midrange, unrefined highs
Get Better with age -& they are Floorstanding, not bookshelfIf you don't have room for a subwoofer, these speakers are perfect for Home Theater use. Otherwise, I'd recommend getting the 603's with the B&W 600 Subwoofer. Adjust the 603 speakers to music listening w/o the subwoofer, then add the subwoofer for movies. Perfect.

The mouse that roared! [4.5 stars]One tip: most surround stereo receivers can adjust the power/output to emphasize the front speakers more than the rears. I highly advise doing that. In fact, Cambridge SoundWorks wants you to do that. Once you do that, you will notice a lot more bass from the subwoofer, as well as louder dialogue from the front speakers.
This system is a consumers best buy! It is easily the best value per dollar that I have ever spend on Audio/visual equipment. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on a budget and doesn't want to lose out on experiencing 5.1 surround sound or DTS. And it will sound great!
The perfect system for my small living room!

bug with the phase knobAfter bringing one home, I hooked it up to speaker level inputs, and noticed an odd phenomenon: the sound changed dramatically at one point on the phase dial, around 160degrees. I believe that below 160 degrees, the crossover filter wasn't working correctly, above 160, it was. I tried line level inputs and noticed the exact opposite: above 160 degrees, the bass was a much higher frequency. The piece I was using to test this is Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (i.e., the 2001 fanfare), which has a low frequency pedal note basically throughout the piece. (I think my CD has this pedal note as two frequencies an octave apart.) I went back to the store and tried this same piece on their P500 and P1000. Both did the same thing, so it's not just my box; it's an inherent bug. This sudden difference for a small change in the phase knob disturbed me.
I figured I could deal with this issue as long as it sounded good. I brought home an open box Energy e:XL-S12 to compare. The Energy has a bigger woofer and is ported, so I figured it would be sloppier than the P500. I put on a Bach fugue and did the comparison. Sixteenth notes in the pedals are very hard for organ pipes to do well, nevermind speakers, but after comparing a section, I noticed a difference, and asked my wife who "isn't discriminating" (her words) to listen. After listening to just a few seconds immediately said, "This one [the Energy] sounds way better, huh?" yup. The big, ported subwoofer somehow is more accurate. The P500 never hits any of the notes, and just compromises with some mud in the middle. The Energy makes a valiant attempt (although not quite matching the more pricey Velodyne SPL800).
The Energy is also slightly louder, and clearly goes lower in frequency (despite a not-so-disparate spec).
I hope Cambridge Soundworks fixes their bug in the phase knob. I hope they add a light to the volume knob so you can see its setting when controlling it with the remote. I hope they figure out why their bass isn't as tight as a big bass reflex box. I hope they can make that satellite module smaller so it doesn't take up the space of a audio component. When they fix all of that, I'll want one badly.
Until then, it's an okay performance sub, in a small, attractive package, but other subs (like Energy) have better performance at the price.

Sounds great - service is not so goodI have had trouble with the sub. It requires a very high volume to kick in - then works at any volume as it should. When i called C-V they said it is a common problem and is very easy to fix - two capacitors or something. They referred me to their local service guys who 'fixed' it - but the problem still remains. I went back to C-V and they said not a problem - we'll send you a new amp asap. That was a month ago and my system is still in shambles waiting for the new amp.
So, when the sub is working - the system really does sound great. Unfortunately you have to blast the system to get the woofer to kick in and it may go to sleep again if the movie has 20 minutes without a strong bass signal.
Reccomendation: carefully test them when you get them home and make sure there are more in stock before you take one home.
Absolutely wonderful sound! Here's how to tweak the sub...And what a good looking set of speakers!
Some people might take issue with an internal setting in the subwoofer. The sub does not kick in unless it receives a minimum volume signal. This can be annoying when you want to watch Dolby Digital/DTS movies at night. You would have to wake up your neighbors in order to turn on the sub.
Here's how to change the internal setting of the subwoofer:
You need to disconnect the amplifier from the sub and set the jumper from "auto" to "on". The "auto" mode does not let the sub kick in unless it receives a minimum volume signal. In my opinion, the this very easy to do and should not take more than a few minutes.
If you are squeamish about opening up and messing with the sub, then don't follow the procedure. Simply take a printout of this review to your nearest electronics service outlet. I don't recommend going the official customer support route with Cerwin Vega unless you want to deal with the hassles.
Warning - disconnect the power cable first! Remove the peripheral screws and carefully separate the amp from the unit. Carefully inspect the green circuit board until you locate the jumper - which clearly indicates "On", "Auto" and "Off" in white letters. Simply remove the jumper from the "Auto" position and insert in into the "On" position. Double check that the amp is still connected to the sub's speaker. Thats all you need to do. Now screw the amp back on, reconnect the power supply, turn on the sub and enjoy!
In conclusion, I am highly satisfied with this speaker set. I could not find a better 5.1 set for under $500.

not as full as...
Rocks the houseThis is my second set of CV's in the last 15 years. The only reason for that is I sold the first set when I needed the money.
They are very clean sounding and almost eliminate the need for a subwoofer.
No distortion whatsoever - in fact they are so clean they point out the flaws in cd recordings.

- 8-inch woofer

A great speaker with utter clarity!
Great speakers but try other Cerwin Vega speakers instead?

Decent satellites but spend a little more and get betterI also tested the higher end SAT-5 Cerwin Vegas and was definitely more impressed. They are only a little more expensive and you'll get the quality of these speakers plus a whole lot more.
