Close-up lenses are no substitute for macro accessories such as a bellows unit and extension ring, but they do allow you to take close-up shots covering a subject field with the area of half a postcard, taken at a range of down to around 25cm, with a standard lens. Their main advantage They do not block any light, so they only alter the reproduction ratio and greatly increase the working range of standard and telephoto lenses. For reasons of quality, stopping down to at least f/8 is recommended.

If you are an outdoor photographer, this filter is a must for your collection. The gradual grey allows you to get the correct exposure for the sky and land. For example, if you are shooting a sunset (or sunrise) it is easy to correctly expose the sky, living the bottom part of your picture underexposed and almost black. FYI - this filter is part of the Cokin P series, which are a bit bigger than their A series and designed for wider angle lenses. If you aren't sure what size lens you are going to be using the filter with it is probably a good idea to be safe and go with the P series. Helpful hints : Handle the cut out fitters carefully and place them in the gelatin Holder (194), one of which is supplied with the Cokin Creative set. You may need several Modular Hoods (255) to protect the filters against the weather : check that the hoods do not vignette the image. These filters do not offer the optical quality of classical filters and cannot replace them for all applications.

These filters allow you to concentrate on the subject itself and eliminate all unnecessary background detail, Don't use them for all subjects, only those that lend themselves to the effect. Use them for portraits, nudes, still life, landscapes or anytime you want to suppress unwanted background detail and to capture the spirit of the subject.

Helpful hints : Each of the five Pre-shaped frames comes in two sizes to match different subjects and lenses. Don't use super wide-angle lenses. The smaller the lens aperture (and the further the Pre-shaped frame is from the front of the lens) the sharper the cutout shape. The distance between your lens and the Pre-shaped frames can be varied by using a Cokin Modular Hoods (255) and the Coupling ring(308). Also, the lighter the subject or background itself the more pronounced the edge of the cutout will appear. These frames can be combined with most of the Cokin system filters, especially Diffusers, Pastels, color filters of all kinds, etc.
