Used to be the Best Brand but still dependable! The Mag Instrument S2C016 Black Heavy-Duty 2 C-Cell Flashlight is STILL a good value and I have several in the house and the vehicles. But they're being replaced by Surefires as they wear out.
John Row
Durable and ReliableThe 2 c-cell model is a bit large for the average kitchen drawer or auto glove compartment. But it works great for aviation and should be equally suited for boating, camping etc.

Maglite didn't follow through with my warranty request!Hmmmm. Is this how long time customers are treated? I previous owned a variety of their flashlights, from an AAA Solitaire to a 5-D flashlight, at least 5 in total. My dad has purchased in the neighborhood of 15 or more himself, starting in about '86 when someone else turned him onto Maglites.
Customer support is as important to me as the product itself. Has customer support become a casualty of a tough economy?
This long-time customer will have to look at alternatives the next time he's buying a flashlight.
Mag-Lites are the only flashlights you'll ever need. The primary job of a flashlight is, not surprisingly, to create light. Mag gets more light out of their flashlights than anybody. Maybe it's the bulb, or the reflector. But NO flashlight will come close to putting out as much light as a Mag.
Another quality we hope to find in any product is functionality -- does it work every time, or mainly when you don't need it? I can't recall more than a time or two that a Mag failed to come on. I've dropped them from heights that would have destroyed anything less and they still worked.
I have an old black AA-size Mini-Mag here that spent about a decade in the cockpits of airplanes -- the poorest lighted places this side of the Black Forest -- so it got a world of use. The place on the end cap for attaching a lanyard or hanging ring is worn completely through. But the little guy still works like a charm.
The switch on this D-cell model is under live rubber; it has a solid click on and off. The beam is adjustible to a sharp spot. You'll probably want to set it there and leave it alone.
I am certain that batteries last longer in a Mag-lite. The only explanation for this would seem to be that a tiny bit of battery drain occurs on some others. Before I became 100% converted to Mags I would too often pick up a flashlight that was full of dead batteries. I can go for years without changing the batteries in a Mag-lite.
All Mags are rugged. The barrels are sturdy aluminum extrusions -- not plastic or stamped metal. Both end caps have O rings to keep the case waterproof. And who else would be so thoughtful as to put an extra bulb in the bottom endcap?
A reviewer below had a legitimate gripe about tubular things not staying put on anything but a level surface. Of course, that has been a complaint for years about pens and all kinds of tubular devices. This can be cured for the Mag-Lite with a very small bungee cord. Tie several knots in it until it is shortened enough to fit tight around the barrel. The knots will keep the light from rolling around.
I like the new hot red Mag-Lites. Anybody with any sense at all would know a pretty red flashlight would throw more light than a black one. It just stands to reason.
The only kind of flashlight I'm using. It's strong, the four D batteries dont run out quickly, has an on/off switch (unlike smaller Mag models), and doesnt generate much heat.
When electricity blacks-out, the torch mode of this flash light (the lense can be taken off) is very useful - I can continue studying / reading / writing for some while, as the light is strong enough.
I bought it about a year ago, as a small insurance in case the Y2K bug would have taken the electricity down, and it proved itself useful since.

Mega Disappointment
I Like ItPros: Really, really bright. There's no hype there. This thing is like two car headlamps strapped together and placed in your hand.
The sealed lead-acid batteries (there are two, one in the bottom "block" and one in the upper part behind the lamps themselves) are strong, reliable, and long-lasting.
Cons: It's somewhat heavy for one-handed operation, but it comes with an optional strap which you can throw over your shoulder to have to keep from supporting the entire weight with your hand. It may sound awkward as I describe it, but it works very well.
The fit-and-finish is only "average". It's made overseas like so many things these days, and some of the labels, ports/connectors feel less than optimal, but I consider this criticism to be a nit. The things I've mentioned are really only aesthetic and don't affect the light's performance.
And a caution: The lens gets very very hot after use, so you need to store it with that in mind until it cools down after several minutes.
Conclusion: Highly recommended. If you need powerful, portable light, this is it.

Batteris Not Needed
Someone please respond/review to this request 4 information.WHAT kind of battery/batteries it takes. Someone please answer w/
a review to SPECIFY WHAT SIZE AND QUANTITY BATTERY is required to
operate this (apparently very nifty) flashlight. For example, the
battery SIZE is "button" (state which model number); the COUNT to
run the light would be ?? # of cells (for example two AAA's, or 2
button cells, whatever...). The reason I'd like to know (before I
buy) is that I'll be "stuck" with a high-maintenance flashlight @
so much money per set of hard-to-get batteries. It's one thing if
the penlight takes AA or even AAA, but when/if it requires a AAAA
or a set of button cells, then the cost and availability of those
specialty batteries becomes a reason to abandon the thought of an
online order for the flashlight itself. Am a virgo... 'Nuff said?
Love it!

Light bulb (13 watts) lasted only 5 weeks
A very pleasant surprise.Originally, I saw this lighting concept [true color lite] on display in a retail store. The light was part of a side by side demonstration where you could read material illuminated by both this light and a conventional light bulb.
The difference was startling. The Ott-light was soft, glare free and the printed material was easier to read by an order of magnitude. Colors were natural and pleasing, printed material even appeared more clearly / more sharp. I could hardly believe my tired old eyes.
I needed a good light for my computer desk so I took a chance and ordered this one via the internet.
When I received the light and began using it at my computer station I was startled at how really good it is. Sure, the fixture is extremely well made and is easily adjustable, but more importantly the light was simply perfect for use around computer monitors. What a pleasant surprise ... a product that delivers real quality.
That is when I realized the primary reason I did so little work at my regular desk was my old hot glaring incadencent desk lamp. The old style lamp made working difficult. It was difficult to adjust, everything had a yellow cast, the glare on glossy material was horrible and it gave off a lot of heat.
When my second new Ott-Lite Executive Desk Lamp arrives in a day or two that old desk lamp is headed for the garage sale.
It has been a long time since I have been so totally satisfied with a purchase. If I had not seen it for myself, I would have never believed it. I'm going to be selling a lot of these for this company when friends come over and see this light.
