My GX300 came installed with only (1) 128mb RAMBUS RIMM. In the 2nd slot was the terminator called a CRIM (looks like a plain circuit board with no memory). I decided a 256mb RAMBUS RIMM would give me the best bang for the buck (in RAMBUS memory, that still means you are paying several times more than SDRAM) so I ordered one (yes, only one against the advice of Viking's website) of these modules in.

I put it in and my heart sank when my PC wouldn't even boot! A quick call to Viking support and I found out that I needed a BIOS update from Dell. I was running A07. In order to install a 256mb module, you need at LEAST version A08. When I went to Dell, I found out that the BIOS update was up to A10!

So, long story short, I installed the BIOS upgrade and the RIMM went in without a hitch. By the way, you don't need a PAIR of modules (which Viking recommends) because the GX300 uses the i820 chipset; subsequent chipsets require MATCHED pairs. So I dodged a bullet of having to order another expensive RIMM module and used my existing 128mb module together with the new 256mb module.

everything runs smoother and faster now that we've got 160mb instead of 32 mb of ram. this basically extends the useful life of our 366mzh machine for a little while longer.

1) Very easy to install. The memory comes with no instructions, however, the package has a sticker directing you to the company's website. From there you can download a PDF file of the installation instructions. Unless you have never opened a computer before and do not consider yourself technical - you can install this in under five minutes without the instructions.

2) Improved performance. This is a given but I do want to add some warning to those people thinking upgrading their memory by another 64MB will do wonders - it is all relative. If you have 32MB of RAM and you add another 64, your computer should fly. If you have 256MB and add another 64, you'll probably not notice any difference.

Overall this has been a good upgrade for me. My computer's available resources went from 25% to 40% after the installation -and at the current price of $50 this was an easy pick up.
