Best for the money by far - worthless software
Best value for the moneyIf you're looking for a cam to chat with others online with, then this cam has all the features you need. You can pay twice as much (or more) for other cams with more features, and if money is no object to you then I'd spend more. But if you want solid, reliable features, then you're not going to beat the [$$$] or so you spend on this webcam.
I chose this over a Logitech model for 2 reasons. First, other reviewers complained about all but the more expensive models. Second, this was so much cheaper and offers the same features. Works with Yahoo, AOL, and MSN, and has great pics and supersize ability. Not as smooth as the more expensive models, but if you want the basics, this is for you.
Installation was easy--if you can read directions, you shouldn't have problems. I'm not going to accuse other reviewers of not being able to read, but I have Windows XP and had no problems installing at all. However, once the setup is complete, there are no other instructions...a more detailed troubleshooter would be nice. However, this is available online.
The 2 biggest features are making your own movies or using it as a live webcam. However, you can't do both simultaneously. So if you're using the camera to look at something, you won't be able to log onto yahoo webcam or any of the others...you'll have to shut it off first. Keep that in mind...took me 20 minutes to figure it out.
Enjoy this product!

Great all-around value. But accessorize your purchase!Video Quality: 4.5 Stars
The video quality is great -- good light or bad. There is a slight delay in the auto-focus if lighting fluctuates or if there are items close and distant from the camera. This is especially noticeable immediately after you turn the camera on. Once the camera has done its initial focus it is pretty quick. Of course, you are welcome to try to use manual focusing but it too would take you that long to switch to manual focus and then adjust the display.
Night Shot: 4.0 Stars
Night shot is better than most cameras. However, it appears as if you are shining a green flashlight into the dark. The "Super Night Shot" feature is worthless to me. The sample rate is slow and the video unfocused 75% of the time. This feature could have been exchanged for something else useful. I will say that the regular night shot is crisp and clear as opposed to snowy / grainy like other digital camcorders.
Zoom: 4.0 Stars
The zoom is steady and crisp.
Sound Pickup / Microphone: 4.0 Stars
The microphone picks up the zoom button if you "flick" it on and off rather than "ease" it. Play with it for a while and practice before you start taking video that has important audio with it. The microphone is otherwise good. It picks up all the sound you want and keeps the unwanted background sound to a minimum. If you think it needs improvement you can purchase the external microphone kit or use your own mic plugged into the external mic port.
In-Camera Video Editing: 3.5 Stars
The in-camera video editing options are nice to have if you blew all your money on the camera and don't have the $$ to spend on the firewire card to do your editing on the computer.
Included Software: 3.0 Stars
The software does the work easily but lacks some features. I recommend trying a few other shareware versions of other products before you settle into the provided software.
Recommended Updates:
Sony Handycam Camcorder Value Kit ($80) -
Includes Sony Carrying Case and an Extra Battery
The case will keep your investment protected. The extra battery allows you to keep filming while your other battery charges.
Ambico Lithium-Ion Battery Charger ($49) -
This kit allows you to plug the battery in the car charger or at home in a standard outlet. If you are going to be filming for an extended period of time, consider purchasing at least one extra battery and the charger. The Sony Kit provides the extra battery.
Sony DV Editing Kit ($89) -
This kit is called EZ Editor. The kit gives you an internal PCI two-port firewire card, a firewire cable, and Pinnacle Studio 7 SE. The software is very easy to use, and very effective. You can upgrade the software to a more professional feel for about $49 online. The installation of the card is easy, the software is simple and has a multitude of features and is 100% compatible with the camera.
Summary:
This camera is great all around. It has every port for input and output that you would want (under current standards). The instructions are GREAT. Thank goodness they finally developed a manual written in English -- and English only! Now you don't have to flip around trying to find the portions that you understand.
I know I have pushed a few accessories here. I'm not a salesman or a Sony representative. My feeling, however, is that accessorizing makes the camera. This camera is nice by itself but is much more convenient once you add the things that make your life easier.
Each person may need different accessories (which is why they aren't included in the camera package) so use the information provided here to help you decide if you need these accessories or not.
I would recommend that you take the time to step through the owners manual and test each feature that they walk you through. It will prevent you from introducing yourself to the feature at a time when you'd rather be filming. If you purchase the carrying case, the manual fits snug into the front pocket. Keep it there and reference it.
Lastly, I recommend buying a warranty with your camera. Cleanings are recommended every 6 months, this is still a new technology and the warranty doesn't cost that much. I purchased my camera at Best Buy with the warranty. I can bring my camera into Best Buy for a free cleaning as often as I like. I have unlimited repair or replacement of my product should it need replaced. I don't usually buy these warranties, but when you spend this much on a camera, consider this insurance!
Great thing to possessEarlier I had Panasonic PV DV800. I returned that one because I wasn't happy about video quality.
I liked TRV 730.
Pros :
Day light video quality is superb. Except night time it is not quite good. Mega Pixel digital photo is quite satisfactory.
USB support is very useful. You can just connect to computer and your camcorder will become virtual disk. It is pretty sleek and data transfer is fast.
Cons.
Memory is just 4 MB. I could hardly take 5 photos with high resolution. Separate Battery charger could be better. At night time even there is plenty of light, picture seems little dark.
Final Word:
There are many DV camcorder cheaper than this one. I will still recommend this based on quality. I found this digital 8 better than other DV's. Overall this is best bet.
This Camcorder is the Fashizzle

Very Nice! The main reason to choose this camera is its speed, weight, AND price. This camera is MUCH faster than the canon. The startup time is practically zero, there is virtually no shutter lag, and the shot to shot time is fast as well. I found the canon S400 to be much slower.
The autofocus routine is good.
It is also much lighter (in weight) than the canon which is nice.
The Minolta also has much more in the way of manual control.
The one thing that I wish this camera had is the panoramic option where you can stitch several pictures together using the LCD viewfinder (the canon has this feature). But I can do this with my computer later so this is not a bid deal.
Some people have said that the menu system is not organized well - I agree, but it is really not that bad.
I like that the battery charger (which comes with the camera) is external to the camera so I can charge a battery while still using the camera (I have 2 batteries).
So with the exception of the panoramic feature of the canon S400, I could not find a reason to spend the extra $ to buy it over this Minolta G400. And now that I have it, I am glad I got the Minolta.
My feeling is that the reason the canon S400 is so popular on Amazon is that people see that other people have bought it, so they buy it.
P.S. the Minolta G500 is actually an OLDER model than the G400 even though it is a 5M pixel.
Admirable P&S camera but poor low-light AF performanceRecognized as a generic mass storage device under Windows XP - No drivers from device vendor required
Small size. Easy to take with you
Manual controls
34mm equivalent wide angle (most P&S cameras are in the 35-39mm range)
SD and Memory Stick slots
Decent battery life
LCD can still be seen reasonably well in bright sun
Good picture quality
Low shutter lag
Decent flash
Many features for the price
Cons:
Big:
Poor AF performance in low light despite Minolta hype to the contrary
Nit picky:
No diopter setting for the viewfinder (Not need by me, yet)
Blue LED on front that does nothing
Unintuitive menuing system takes some getting used to
Zoom not continuous
No date stamp feature
Speaker placement on top left corner is easily blocked by left index finger so the "click" sound cannot be heard
Typos in menus and documentation
Depression on back right of camera angled wrong making the camera more difficult to grip
Non-existent technical support (no reply to my email regarding poor low-light AF performance)
No TV-out option
Great camera to carry around in your shirt pocketI've compared with three coworkers who bought the Sony DSC-T1: The Sony is about as fast, smaller and sleeker, but performs much worse in low light conditions. I've seen quite a few pictures that were shot indoors and the flash didn't manage to properly light the scene. I don't think that should be happening with a camera that sells for $150 more than my camera.
To nail this problem we took photos with both cameras under identical conditions. The G400 picture is slightly underexposed, but not bad considering it was almost dark in the room when I pressed the shutter. The T1 on auto setting on the other hand was underexposed by about two f-stops. Setting the T1 to ISO400 helped somewhat, but made the picture very noisy :(
What tipped the scale for me is the overall quality of pictures and the absolutely amazing speed of the camera. In general I found that people talk too much about megapixels. What matters much more than actual megapixels (once you've moved past two megapixels) are the optical properties of the camera like lens, autofocus system, etc. The pictures I've taken so far were almost all very crisp with radiant colors. The colors were usually a bit too warm and could sometimes benefit from a bit of adjustment in Photoshop, but were excellent otherwise.
Overall I'd say the camera has some flaws but is a very nice little point and shoot camera that offers lots of manual adjustments when you're ready for them. And given the current market prices for this camera this is one of the best buys out there. That's why I'm giving it five stars despite having some flaws.
Oh, and I forgot to mention: Don't fall for this camera's big brothers the G500 and the G600! As I understand it, they don't have the fast passive autofocus system the G400 has and the G600 even has a crippled movie mode.
And while we're speaking about the movie mode: 320x240 at 15 frames per second is not quite state of the art anymore and shouldn't be a factor in your buying decision of any digital still camera. If you insist on a decent movie mode, go and buy a digital camcorder. You'll have a lot more fun that way with ample storage space and a working optical and digital zoom.

Beware of the flash
good for cheap price... i thinkif you just want a digital camera for little photos, this is a good one, just make sure you buy rechargeable batteries and a bigger memory card.
For this price - its Great! The only drawback was no optical zoom, but that I still think for the price it is a great camera to own, I take my everywhere.

GREAT CAMERA, BUT SOME ISSUESHowever, there are some problems:
1. Red eye reduction - Even though the camera has a "red-eye reduction function" red eye still prevails.
2. Not compatible with AOL 7.0 - When sending photos e-mail, I have to send them through my hotmail.com e-mail because the camera isn't compatible with AOL 7.0, a problem that was confirmed when I called HP.
3. Batteries - My batteries didn't last a day!! This camera DEVOURS batteries. I have the adapter, but can't use outside of the house!
4. Screen - Is hard to see in bright light, and sometimes, not so bright light.
Other than these issues, I really like this camera. It's my first digital. I will however, probably purchase a better one in the future.
Nice camera for the home user
Simply Amazing! Some notes on the reviews I've seen:
1. I'm using it with Windows 98 SE and have had no problems whatsoever. Regular Windows 98 is almost as bad as Windows XP in its hostility to peripherals;
2. You really shouldn't use any digital camera in bright sun, for instance, at the beach. It's bad for the LCD screen, which you won't be able to see anyway, and;
3. The Red Eye Reduction feature works if you follow the instructions and some basic camera rules. Namely, DON'T have your subjects look directly into the camera.

- 2.0 megapixel sensor creates 1,600 x 1,200 images for prints at sizes up to 8 x 10 inches

Don't Come Anywhere Near This Worthless Camera!!!!Yeah, I was polite and thankful upon getting it as a gift, but I'll defenitely be returning it with a speed!
Before you ever turn on the camera, you'll already be unimpressed. The camera feels very light and plastic-ish. Weighing in at a mere .46 pounds, this thing feels more like a children's toy than a real $200 digital camera.
Then you start taking pictures ...Anyone who has ever had a digital camera before will immediately notice the lack of features and options, and the picture quality can easily be obtained (surpassed, even??) with a much cheaper 35mm. There really isn't any special features or advanced options to speak of, and the photographer's creative control is extremely restricted. There is not even a Sepia or Black & White Mode to speak of, so any such editing of your pictures will have to be done on your computer, in a Photoshop program for example.
Many things that a serious photographer would like to have control over will be absent. The white balance, ISO, and the shutter speed cannot be controlled, they are all automatic! This becomes very frustrating.
There is also a "movie" mode, but I believe it is actually refered to as a "motion image" or "motion JPEG" or something. This is because you can't record the video with audio.
So really, the best thing to do is never, ever, ever buy this camera for yourself, or loved ones on their birthdays, either. Serious photographers will find absolutely NO significant controls to take charge over, feeling very restricted. The camera is simply too simple for them. Folks new to digital cameras will find themselves satisfied for now, but in a few months when they begin learning more and more about digital cams they will already be ready for an upgrade. So even for amateurs, the camera is not worth the price.
I recomend instead the Sony Cybershot P10. It does cost a bit more money, but new digital photographers will find a lot of options and controls at their disposal. Even though there's a bit more to learn with that camera, no one should be intimidated by it. Sony has made a very easily-accessible camera in the P10.
For even more advanced photographers, the Nikon Coolpix 5700 is an excellent 5.0 megapixel camera, with even yet more advanced features than the Sony P10.
Both of these cameras will make any photographer, amateurs and serious ones, very happy ...the price is a little higher, but anyone willing to give either a try will realize that the price is definitely worth it.
And as for this worthless camera? Anyone could eventually find that this simplified, point-and-shoot camera is hardly worth $200. I wouldn't pay one red cent for this thing.

Best Digital Camera for the Price Anywhere
Love It!Two minor nits are that the camera feels very plasticky for its price (but so do all other cameras in this price range, it seems), and the built-in amount of RAM is not going to give you a whole lot of capacity.

- 4.0-megapixel resolution for photo-quality enlargements up to 11 x 14

Best bet for your buck on 4 MPs !!!!3-4 pictures out of every 10, came out blurry! So make sure you read that manual before you get started! D-565 is just a bit more than a "point & shoot" camera and if you learn how to use it, you will love the crisp picture quality and it's ease of use! Alkaline batteries are totally out of question as this camera has really been designed to use rechargeable NiMH or CR-V3 Batteries. My rechargeable Kodak NiMH batteries can take a good 150 pictures before they run out of juice. The only two negative things about this camera in my opinion are:
-The auto focus is relatively slow.
-The Low Battery warning will start flashing too early when the batteries are still almost half way full.
Aside from the minor things above, I think this camera is probably the best bet for your buck on 4MPs.
Great Pictures; So-So ManualGripes: Sucks AA's dry far too quickly. REALLY needs NiMH's or recommended AC adapter for downloads, etc.
Get a D-565 while you can and get out there!
Great 4mp camera!!!!!!!I do recommend getting a higher XD-Picture Card for this camera, It comes with a 16MB card, you only take 5 pictures at high res. I got a 128MB card with that you can take 44 high res pictures.
This camera can take AA batteries which you can get anywhere. It has a strong flash for this size camera.
The pictures came out great, easy to download to your computer.
Great software with this camera. You cant beat this price for a 4MP camera.
You can download the manual and see if it fits your needs. This is a great 4MP camera!!!!

Great gadget, great size
A great all-in-one (almost) audio/video deviceThe video editing software that comes with this baby is not ideal, but it handles the basic tasks of viewing and deleting files. I also wish I could use the device as a webcam. But other than that, I've had so much fun with it, including recording instructions for my wife on how to use it!
VERY GOODa retard could figure this out it's so easy, but if you are going to buy this buy an extra card for recording because they dont hold very much. well, you should still buy this because instead of buying those expensive video camera, or mp3 players, or digital cameras it's all in one and VERY COOL

Not as good as advertisedThe first thing my wife and I noticed when we powered it up was how washed out the screen looked. The salesperson said it would look that way on the screen but that the colors would look perfect after downloading the video to my computer. That was not the case - it was just as washed out on my computer. In fact, the video looked worse than the 30sec clips I can take with my Canon S230 digital camera. I went back to the store and returned the camcorder.
I was still intrigued and wondered if I had just gotten a lemon. So I went to a different store, where the saleperson said a number of customers had mentioned how washed out the screens look (especially reds & yellows - flesh tones look out of wack). I asked him to arrange the HC40 and the TRV33 side by side since I discovered that the TRV33 was also small, but not as small as the HC40 - we were astonished (along with other customers watching our impromptu demo) at how poor the HC40 screen looked. The TRV33 blew away the HC40 and it wasn't close by any means. It had much richer colors and captured the colors much more accurately than the HC40.
If you're seriously considering this camcorder, I highly suggest that you put it side-by-side with another Sony not in the HC series and see what you think of the image - I, along with everyone at the store who watched our demo, obviously give this camcorder very, very poor marks for the image.
I gave this camcorder 2 stars b/c the rest of the camcorder seems great - great asthetics, strong ergonomics, nice features like a built-in lens cap - but the poor image defeats to purpose of all the great features especially at this price.
Great home camSo I bought both the TRV22 and HC40 and compared them at home. Yes, the TRV22 does shoot noticably better in low light conditions, but practically speaking the HC40 is good enough for me, and the form factor more than makes up for it. I'd give it 5 stars if 1) its low light ability was as good as the TRV22 and 2) if its auto focus responded a bit quicker.

Good small bag for the 5700As to the turning on in the case. I suppose this would be a problem if I didn't consistantly turn the camera off and the switch to review. If the camera is switched on accidently, the lens won't extend. Simple solution that one should always use regardless of the case.
I imagine this will fit the new Nikon 8700 as well.
There seems to be two models of this case floating around out there. (especially on ebay) The one pictured above is the best. The other seems to be lacking some pockets and features.

Great Advanced Amateur/Novice Camera. Two caveats, one - it looks like CF mem will soon be replaced with CF II. Although CF mem will still be around, it wil definitely put a time limit on how long you can use the camera. two - either get a card reader, or get a larger card (which u'll need) that comes with a USB reader, most good cards (mine is lexar) do this. All in all, the camera is SPECTACULAR!!!
-Unfortunately, the software doesn't work. I have a Celeron 2GHz Windows XP system and the software that came with the camera couldn't detect the camera. I contacted Creative Technical support and they were very responsive, but they couldn't fix the problem. The software seemed almost like it was a beta version or somebody's incomplete homework. Fortunately, the software is not necessary because I use Yahoo/MSN messenger to video conference and Windows MovieMaker for everything the software was supposed to do and then some.
-When you chat with someone, they don't need a camera to see your live video. So you can show them how good the product is and encourage them to get one too. The frame rate is much better with MSN, but the picture is larger with Yahoo. Yahoo has a super function that enables a faster frame rate, but I haven't been able to get it to work even though I have MSN DSL.
