Perfect
Great GamesMy son, 9 years old, also loves playing both. Of course, he sometimes hits the "accept word" (after spell-checker flags it) when he spells words wrong just to get high points (e.g., "XJQVY"), but he usually spells them right and this helps in his vocabulary and spelling.
Monopoly is just as easy and has helped my game playing tremendously. I am not thinking about going pro, but if I were, I would certainly have this game in my arsenal.

First rate DACs, clean amp, difficult interfaceI bought this unit for its DACs and the number of digital inputs it accepted, its video switching capability, and its low distortion amplification. I might get around to buying surround or a subwoofer, but I'd prefer a unit with 1/4 of the electronics and a simpler interface; they're simply not available. I do appreciate the number of audio inputs. I'm plugging in optical input from a Turtle Beach Audiotron, S/PDIF input from a DVD/CD player, S/PDIF input from my workstation/home theater, and plan to plug in an optical input from a Sony Playstation 2. After all that, the input cables and a single stereo pair of speaker cables look lonely among the dozens of back-panel inputs.
I wanted this kind of processing for my home theater PC and my computer-based CD collection. The Audiotron is a wonderful device that allows MP3s or full CD-resolution WAV files to be read from a network and piped into a home-theater receiver like this one; CDs sound the same ripped to disk full resolution and played back through the Audiotron as they do from the DVD player or computer's digital inputs. My computer provides S/PDIF output, so DVD soundtracks (or CD audio) can be passed to the receiver for decoding the same way as they can be passed from the DVD player.
The downside to this receiver is that it is absolutely impossible to set up without (a) the manual, (b) the remote, and (c) an S-video monitor to display the menus you're navigating. Some understanding of surround sound and digital music encoding formats, crossovers, and room acoustics will help in deciphering the configuration menus. I haven't read the documentation on the remote, so most of the buttons and markings are meaningless to me. On the positive side, it's easy to switch sources once they're set up and there's a nice big volume knob, albeit one that requires a lot of spinning to move the volume significantly. I haven't tried other models, so these comments shouldn't be read comparitively; configuring a home theater is a difficult task to pack into a front panel and remote. And if that wasn't enough complexity, this receiver also features video switching, which I am using to route a DVD player, VCR, and soon, the PlayStation2 into my monitor.
In the end, the amazing sound and number of inputs won me over in the face of an extremely challenging interface.

Sound:
Sound is crystal clear. Best sound i have heard. Make sure you setup the channels right and the speaker to large if you have towers. This receiver gives you very precise control. EZ setup takes all the guesswork out but I prefer to do it manually.
I have a digital connect running from the CD player to the AMP, sound is perfect with a lot of depth.
Make sure you have in the least a 12 gauge wire to the speakers this receiver can drive 35 amps. Power is more than enough at 55 Watts X 7 channels. I only use 5, hope to use 7 soon. I cannot drive the volume even half way without the whole room starting to move. So these watts are high AMP watts and again no distortion, does not matter what volume level it is at.
Looks, build and functionality:
This puppy is very sturdy and looks are beautiful, you need a big transformer to be able to pump out those AMPS. You get what you pay for if you buy those toys from other companies which offer sleek models. There are plenty of ports at the back for all sorts of connections. A lot of modes and options.
One tip to consider when buying a receiver is the THD value, the lower it is the better. The receiver has a THD of 0.07% . Most cheap receivers will above .5% . Also consider there are 7 channels in this puppy.
Overall I just cannot get over the fact how clean and powerfull the sound is. Worth every penny if you ask me.

just good old plain stereo
My CD collection doubled!!!Since this was meant to be a replacement to be located at my bedroom and mostly for music playing, my first idea was to look for one of those popular mini-systems with everything integrated on them. I found some interesting products from Onkyo and Denon but, although their sound was quite nice (especially Denon's), I found that their power was somehow limited.
Then, I decided to look for some of those "Home Theater in a box" systems that are so popular nowadays, even if I would use it primarily for music reproduction! I tried Sony, Kenwood and Denon. I found an interesting Denon system, but before buying it I decided to bring along a couple of my own CDs in order to try it out with my own music!
The next day I took a couple of my favourite CDs with me to try them with the Denon. I chose Mahler's Symphony #3 (with Boulez), Andreas Scholl's "Ombra mai fu", some Dead Can Dance and Air's "Moon Safari". It really sounded nice but since I had those CDs with me I decided to make a last visit to the department store where I had seen the Denon and Onkyo mini-systems before making a final decission.
An hour later I visited this department store and went to their audio department. Instead of looking for the mini-systems I went directly to the high-end audio area. Among the various Onkyos, Marantz, Denons and Yamahas I noticed Harman Kardon's new HK-3480, and I immediately liked the looks of it's new design! Then, I contacted a salesman and after telling him that I mostly listen to classical music (although my other musical tastes are quite varied), he suggested me to give the Harman Kardon a try!
I was able to compare the Harman Kardon with the Denons (both the mini-system and the Home Theater options). After some listening I was convinced that a nice stereo system was more than enough for me. The power and sheer clarity of sound of Harman Kardon's HK-3480 was immediately noticeable!
We first tried it with a couple of Yamaha speakers, then with Cerwin-Vega, Infinity and finally with Polk. Boy oh boy, what a beautiful sound the Polk's have, cristal clear and absolutely gorgeous!!! Besides, they look so sharp! We finally added an Infinity subwoofer and there it was, the perfect setup for me! I was really ready to make a final decission! I bought Harman Kardon's HK-3480 reciever along with H-K's FL-8385 CD player, a pair of Polk's RTi8 speakers and Infinity's PS10 subwoofer. What a difference from my old and humble Sony setup! By the way, if you choose Polk speakers like I did, get the black ones, they look great along Harman Kardon's silver and black design!
The HK-3480 receiver works great! There are more than enough connections inputs on it, including several for audio/video and a phono input too (now I'm also thinking about replacing my old Technics for a brand new turntable). The HK-3480 is surely a great receiver for those who want top quality stereo sound, but it should me mentioned that with the VMAx feature on this receiver you can have simulated surround sound too when you need it!
I now feel that all of a sudden my CD collection doubled in size since every single CD in my collection sounds so much better now! I'm rediscovering music that I bought 10 or 15 years ago! What a joy!!!

Good, but darn expensiveI only paid $75 for a used LaserJet IID with a memory upgrade. The difference between the II and III models was more memory in the LaserJet III. After a while the memory chips they used became obsolete in current PCs so bunches of used memory from dead obsolete PCs was available for practically nothing. A local store that specializes in used PC equipment sells them with lots more memory than the originals. After 20,000 pages printed I had to buy a new roller. Again, less than the price of the toner.
I have used "refill" toner and it usually leaves streaks long before it's used up. The HP toner works well and long. I don't know why the new ones are so expensive.
Bob
No substitute for the original.
Great looks exeeded my expectations. Te volume is not really loud but for a medium room will work grat. If you are lloking for a budget all in one not needing real power speakers this is it.
