Okay for entry level but the graphics are weak
Great buy, Geforce 2 on bard! This PC is fully loaded, if you want everything this is it.
Almost perfect.
Runs 24/7 non stop for 3 weeks , and no problems.
Highly addicted PC
Nicely Designed PC for Video EditingIt has a built in DVD-RW (a Pioneer A04--good choice). You'll be hard-pressed to find a machine with similar specs including a DVD-RW at this price (as of August 2002). It also has a powerful processor for encoding video quickly. It has conveniently placed IEEE1394 and USB1.1 ports up front so you can hook up your camcorder so easily.
I like the mid-size box, and find the silver/black look appealing. I really like the clean front for the optical drives and connectors (no goofy doors like HP/Sony/etc.) It even comes with a reinstall disk (unlike HP labelled products). Even the keyboard is respectable.
The graphic chip set with shared memory helps keep the price reasonable and if you really need high-end game graphics, you can add a graphics board easily enough. For video editing and everything I ever do, the graphics are fully adequate.
Drawbacks: There is only a single open mounting slot for an additional drive inside. I have placed an additional drive just laying inside. Also, the machine includes some persistant Compaq shopping software that takes a couple steps to disable.
Also of note. The PC comes with no speakers. This is not convenient but at least lets you get just the speakers you want since most included speakers are usually disappointing anyway.
Overall, this is a lovely machine for video work and general use. I'm very pleased with mine after a month churning out videos and homemade DVDs.

Not much success with indoor rangeI needed a way to extend the range of my wireless network inside my house. I wanted to get reception one floor below and many rooms over from the location of my wireless access point. After connecting the Hawking corner antenna to my D-Link DI-614+ access point, I hardly gained any range - although throughput may have increased a little.
I would highly recommend a repeater instead, such as the D-Link DWL-800AP+. It's a little more expensive (~$68) but you get so much more bang for your buck. A repeater is a smart little box full of electronics vs. the little bit of metal and plastic you get with the antenna. I am happily using the network downstairs in my home at high speeds with the D-Link repeater and no Hawking directional antenna. (My laptop is a 17" Apple PowerBook with built-in WiFi and it works great with D-Link)
this is 15dbi gain...the signal has 1 bar increase on windows
then, I check the prism settings for MN710
the percentage has 10-16 point increase over hawking 6dbi omni antenna
and now, the signal is good enough
since the antenna is located on the edge of the house, that the signal still can sweep across the whole house
this is a good buy
This thing is awesome !

I'm Happy
I hate to admit it, but...

Got a better deal !!I do not like the fact that the second drive is only a CD-ROM. I am thinking of taking it out and putting in a 40X CD-R drive, since the write speeds on the DVD-R/CD-R r hopelessly slow, being, 1X and 8X respectively. This is most inexcusable !!
But aside from these issues, the model is very well built and designed with quality written all over it. And the price is very hard to beat.

Very sharp picture, less good softwareHowever, the software is less impressive.
The picture quality is undoubtedly a product of algorithms ensuring good contrast and range, and the picture can be further tweaked to viewer preferences. So far, so good.
It would seem to me that it would be fairly easy to write code that would determine the aspect ration of the picture being fed into the TV and adjust the picture accordingly. This could be overidden by the viewer. Similarly, it should be possible to access the inputs and determine which one had a signal. Instead, one has to mess around with the picture size and inputs which involves finding the remote control....
I don't know whether this is a problem with all modern TVs or not, or perhaps most users are not so fussy about bits of the picture disappearing off the edges. With this model, this aspect of its design could definitely be improved.
While I don't use the internal speakers, I have tried them out; the quality of sound is really very good for a TV.
Ideal for watching DVDsI bought this TV along with a Panasonic home theather system and it provides the best home theather experience I can imagine for my bedroom. DVDs in progressive scan using component cables (I use monster video 2's) look absolutley stunning - just like in the movies if not better - but only from far away. You have to be at least 80 inches (about 6 and 1/2 feet) away from it. The closer you get to it, the more the pixels become apparent.
This TV also has a very slight ghosting problem. Although you can't see it from a far away distance at all (80 inches or so as I've mentioned earlier) it becomes apparent when you're close. All LCD TVs have issues similar to this from what I have seen, so I would recommend an LCD TV only to those who will be watching it from a good distance. The rule of thumb is to watch from a distance of 3 times the size of the diagonal, so for this 26" LCD TV you would wanna be at least 78 inches away. This happens to sound correct given that in my personal experience this was really the best distance to look at it from.
For those looking for a home theather experience, don't let the relativley small size (26") fool you. Since the TV is widescreen watching enchanced for 16:9 DVDs elminates the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. The size of the image itself on such movies is roughly equivalent to a 32" 4:3 Aspect "Square" TV, since on such a TV you have the black bars which take away from the size of the image.
This TV does a GREAT job of making you think you're at the movies, especially with the back lighting and picture settings on TV set to "Movie". If you get the settings right, it looks as if you're looking at a projector in the movies. Having a home theather system with surround sound and a subwoofer (5.1) also enchances the experience a lot. I've watched Signs, Snatch, and Rocky IV on it, and I was absolutley delighted with the quality of the experience.
I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a home theather TV to watch DVDs or HDTV Movies on. But remember to reserve some distance between the TV and where you will sit or the quality of the picture and thus home theather experience will suffer. 80" is my personal minimum.
