This is my second Logitech TrackMan, the other being the "TrackMan Marble +". I decided to test this unit by hooking it up to a laptop via USB and to use the native Windows 98 drivers. The "plug and play" worked without incident. Although I don't have the degree of function control I would have with the Logitech software, the TrackMan works; and I believe the computer is less prone to lockups and crashes without the "Mouseware" installed. I found the thumb marble easy to adapt to. The only thing I could wish for is the more precise cursor control offered by the TrackMan F/X (which Logitech says is not forthcoming in a USB version). If you're like me and prefer the feel of a trackball to a mouse or have limited desktop real estate, give the "TrackMan Marble Wheel" a try. You should be pleased.

I have been using the Logitech TrackMan Marble Wheel (formerly known as the TrackMan Marble Plus) since 1999. Prior to my use of this trackball I was a mouse user. Some people will always be mouse users while others will move beyond that. ;-) The advantages of this trackball are evident to me while I struggle to find negatives. The only negative that comes to mind is that it is a corded device.

This design has two buttons, an wheel, and an optical (yes, I said optical) trackball. The wheel serves as the third button and I have found it very useful as such, binding it to hook/grapple in Quake 2 and later to my secondary fire mode in Unreal Tournament. This design is a derivative of Logitech's older design from before the middle button became a wheel (Logitech TrackMan Marble), and it is given equal space as the middle button was given before it, which allows you to place your first three fingers on the buttons, allowing for quicker response times in games and such.

I've read several of the reviews on this site for this pointing device and there are several points I wish to make clear. This *is* an optical trackball, as all the Logitech TrackMan Marble series are (TrackMan Marble, TrackMan Marble Wheel, TrackMan Marble F/X, TrackMan MarbleMouse). Taken directly from the packaging (I have a spare still in the packaging):

"Patented Marble optical technology delivers superior precision, reduced wear, and smooth tracking, even if the trackball gets dirty. Because it records motion optically, instead of using mechanical parts, there's no need for regular cleaning."

Yes, it is optical, this is true. Yes, it still works smoothly when full of dirt. Yes, it works better if you clean the bearings on which the ball rolls every six months or so.

This trackball (which I may accidently slip and call a 'mouse' if I'm not careful) is a very good thumb-operated design that neatly, comfortably, and functionally fits an adult hand, and it has been discontinued by Logitech for their newer model, the Logitech TrackMan Wheel. (They dropped 'marble' from the title of the new version? Yep.) The new version lacks the additional space around the wheel button, which makes pressing the wheel-button cumbersome. This was not an issue with the version seen here, and it is one of the reasons why I can't easily move to another wheel device. (Nor do I want to, but when I must it is a nuisance.)

As I stated previously, I have been using this device for two years. My wheel still clicks with every roll as it did the day it was bought but after a little use all stiffness was worked out of it and those little clicks just become an extension of measuring how far I've travelled down a page.

Previous reviewers have complained that this mouse doesn't allow for precision movement while others have said it is an excellent device, and I obviously agree with the latter. Two actions to take upon installing any mouse are to run the software and define the speed and the orientation (which way is up). Every user moves his or her pointer in a slightly different fashion. Defining the orientation of the mouse immediately insures it will behave how you like it. Your 'up' is its 'up', your 'left' is its left, and so on. As for speed, I have my trackball adjusted so that with a single roll or my thumb from the left edge of the ball to the other my cursor moves exactly from the left edge of the screen to the right. With games this sensitivity can be increased in-game for a quick 180 degree spin at the flick of the thumb. I'm playing through Serious Sam now and all is right with the world of pointing devices. Speed sensitivity adjustment makes the difference between a barely tolerable device and one mean gaming/productivity pointing device.

Unfortunately, as I said earlier, Logitech has discontinued this trackball design, so as a safety precaution I ordered myself a spare. Nothing is wrong with mine but I got a spare so I'll have it if they become hard to find.

My closing thoughts? If you buy any trackball buy this one. Plain and simple. If you like a mouse? If you're happy with your mouse? Why are you looking at trackballs anyway? When you're ready for a trackball come back to Logitech TrackMan Marble Wheel.

I was in tears when I first started using this mouse as it felt
so right! I immediately went out and bought six of them (1 each
for my laptops and desktops) and this is 5 years ago. My wife who
had incipient carpal tunnel syndrome on her right wrist started
using it at work causing an immediate improvement in her condition.
I will say this about Logitech - they did something right with this
terrific product.

I got this mouse while Microsoft was offering a ...rebate, so my cost through Amazon was [low] after the rebate. For that amount, you might expect this to be a low quality product. And you'd be wrong.

This is the best mouse I've ever owned. I've always been annoyed with traditional roller ball mice, with how they quickly pick up gunk, become inaccurate, and require constant cleaning.

Those days are over! The other reviews talk about how accurate this mouse is, and how it never requires cleaning; quite true. What I didn't see mentioned was how light it is compared to traditional mice. I never thought of an old-style mouse as being heavy, but this is noticeably lighter. This was an unexpected, but much-appreciated benefit.

Another big plus for me is that it isn't loaded with a zillion buttons that I'd never use. I just wanted a basic mouse, and that's what this is.

If you're a lefty like me, you'll also like the fact that this mouse is symmetrical. Most of the more expensive Microsoft mice are shaped specifically to fit the right hand. I can't say whether those feel more comfortable for right-handed people; all I can say is that the shape and size of this mouse is just about perfect for me.

Even at its normal Amazon price ...this mouse is an excellent value. If you can get it at its rebate-assisted price ...it's a no-brainer. I'm going to buy a few as gifts!

Microsoft comes up big with their optical wheel mouse. It is a simple and easy to use mouse that doesn't have any of the extra bull that a lot of mice are coming with these days. The optical sensor works flawlessly and really changes the way you look at mice. The design is nice looking and comfortable to use for right or left handed users. Overall, a great mouse at a great price. No skipping or getting stuck with those crappy balls...it's all about precision with the optical mouse. Upgrade today!

If your looking to take the leap from roller mouse to optical this is the cheapest way in. The microsoft mouse is lighter than a roller mouse and moves easily over a desk top. Mine has been working without a problem for some time and no need to remove the built up goo off the rollers and ball any more. For the price you can't beat it. If you alread have a PS/2 mouse installed you can plug this in to a USB port and use both mice. I can use my old MS PS/2 roller mouse, the new optical mouse and the touchpad on my laptop at the same time. Mouse comes with software to customize nearly everything on the mouse and wheel feature is nice. For the current sale price and rebate you can not go wrong.

I have been using this product for about two years and finally got one for my home computer as well. If you are like me, and find yourself chasing the regular mouse all over your desk, give this a try. After two years of very busy use in a very dusty library (where I work), it has never needed a single cleaning and works like the first day I got it. The buttons are set up beautifully so that it feels very natural in the hand. It is extremely responsive, and the scroll feature works great. The cursor movement is smooth as glass. No more mouse pad taking up a nice chunk of my desk! No more bouncing, jerky cursor due to a slight bit of gunk. No more popping off the bottom the mouse and cleaning the wheels with a pen knife! The Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball is possibly THE most intelligently designed pointing device for PCs and Macintosh personal computers. First of all, in spite of its name, it's a trackball, the superior successor to the computer mouse. Unlike a mouse, it sits in one place and your fingers guide the pointer. You click on menu selections, icons and such with your thumb. It takes mere minutes to get used to this method of moving around the screen but after you do, using a mouse will seem cumbersome and quaint (which it is).

Beneath that black-dotted burgundy ball lies the secret of the Marble Mouse's responsiveness, longevity and reliability. An infrared emitter and optical pickup track the movement of the ball, not mechanical rollers which quickly become gunked up with skin oils and dust. You'd have to let a really thick layer of crud accumulate on the ball before you'll see an impact on the Marble Mouse's performance. Small enough to tuck into your notebook, laptop or PowerBook's carrying case, the Marble Mouse is pure computing bliss compared to jittery trackpads, wobbly finger sticks and erratic rollerballs.

PC users running Windows XP and earlier can simply install the PS/2 adapter and plug the Marble Mouse into the PS/2 mouse port without installing any software. With Windows 98 and later, you can pop off the PS/2 adapter and plug the Marble Mouse into a USB port. Macintosh owners running Mac OS 8.6 or higher will need to install MouseWare from the included CD-ROM and disable the Macintosh Mouse control panel in the Mac OS Extension Manager.

Unlike its more expensive TrackMan siblings, the Marble Mouse is fully ambidextrous, with equal-sized buttons on both sides. The included Logitech MouseWare (also downloadable at www.logitech.com) makes the Marble Mouse behave like a 3-button mouse on PCs (you press BOTH buttons together to access the functions of a third button) while giving Macintosh users one-finger, one-click access to content menus (shades of Windows, eh? :) ). Windows users also benefit from the new page up/page down buttons located just above the main buttons.

Finally, though the price might seem steep compared to a $5 mouse you could pick up at Best Buy or CompUSA, recall how many of those cheap little rodents you've owned and thrown away in the course of a single year.

I loved my Marble Mouse by Logitech. I bought the older version with only the two large buttons. I think a standard mouse is better for playing games but for everything else on the computer it is the only way to go. I have recently upgraded to the Logitech cordless mouse....it too is nice. But if the Optical Marble Mouse came cordless I would plunk my money down and buy it again in a second. I now use my Marble mouse at work and have the cordless at home.

I work as a writer for a software design company. I do a moderate amount of travelling, and tons of moving around the company campus to various meeting locations.

Before I bought the keyboard, I used a notepad and pen to take notes. This meant that everywhere I went I had to remember to take my Palm, notebook, and pen. Then I would type my handwritten notes into my PC. It was time consuming, and less than ideal.

Now, I just plunck down my IIIc and keyboard and type away. Then I hotsync, and - presto - my notes are on my PC. No muss, no fuss. The keyboard is quiet enough to use during meetings, and small enough to fit on an airline tray-table. I love this thing!

Highly recommended for those who do a lot of writing on-the-go. Much better than the Go-Type keyboard (which I investigated, but didn't buy), as I can put my IIIc in one coat pocket, and the keyboard in the other, and never notice that they're there.

I've had none of the problems indicated in other reviews - the software installation was a breeze, the keyboard itself has worked flawlessly, and it has withstood heavy use quite well. One caveat - the keyboard must rest on a solid surface other than your lap, as the center hinge will allow it to "sag" slightly in the center if it is not supported.

A great gizmo for gadget-heads.

I use my Palm Vx to keep my calendar and client contacts in order. When I ride the train, I play a few games to keep from getting bored. I never bothered composing emails because it took too much time and energy to write out or "tap" all those letters on the on-screen keyboard. I bought the folding keyboard so I could expand the capabilities of my Vx. The keyboard is very clever. It's only a little larger than the Palm and unfolds to a FULL SIZE keyboard. Now I type up quick email messages and memos for work. When I travel, I use Word Smith from Blue Nomad software to compose a travel diary. The text documents I type up become Microsoft Word files on my PC! While it is not the ideal device for composing a novel, it does permit you the freedom of writing without lugging around a laptop. If you know someone who uses a Palm Device, the keyboard is an excellent companion gift. (Just make sure you get the right one - they keyboards are designed for specific models)

I was really skeptical--at first--at just how small a full-sized keyboard could actually be...but I am NOW a believer. This portable Palm keyboard is absolutely amazing. If you need to type in large sums of data quickly, and you don't want to rely on writing the grafiti-way, then this little baby isn't something you want, its something you NEED.

You simply won't believe just how small this keyboard actually is when folded all up. It is just slightly larger than my actual m125 Palm. Think I'm joking, don't you? Well I ain't.
In fact I honestly did not believe it was even possible until
I saw it demonstrated myself...upon which I became not just a believer, I became an owner.

Now one important thing to consider before you fork out the nearly $90 bucks it costs is this: Do NOT buy this item UNLESS
you have to type a LOT of info quickly on a REGULAR basis. Don't make the mistake a friend of mine made by buying one, and using it just once-in-a-while. He carries it with him all the time on the off-chance he just MIGHT need it...and to date he's
actually used it 3 times in 9 months. Not exactly worth the price under those circumstances. However, like I said, if you
need to take notes in college (or even high school), or at work during meetings or for whatever reason you may need, buying a portable Palm keyboard will MORE than pay for itself.

My MX 500 arrived in the mail yesterday. I was looking forward to switching from my inherited Apple "Pro" mouse because I had read so many great reviews on the MX 500 and its 8 buttons. Unfortunately, I returned the mouse today. It was way too big and clunky for my small hands. My wrists had started to hurt after about 5 minutes of use. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that this is a great mouse, but not for everyone.

The Logitech MX 500 is a good looking mouse, and it fits in my hand comfortably. I like having all the extra buttons, although I don't use all the buttons very often. I mostly use the left, right, middle, and the two buttons on the side. The mouse is very responsive and the weight is nice. Not too heavy, not too light, just right.

I also own the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical Special Edition. The Intellimouse is slightly lighter, but that doesn't bother me. I have owned 2 Intellimice and 1 of them broke within a year of use (it wasn't an SE). For some reason it started multi left clicking, when I would single left click, from time to time. That's when I got the MS Intellimouse SE, I now have; I have had it for about 3&1/2 or so months. My special edition Intellimouse's buttons are starting to weaken, and they are starting to feel loose, used and abused (which they probably are because I use my mouse for gaming). I like the Intellimouse, that's why I got another one when the first one went bad. It looks cute and it feels fine. The intellimouse can be used by right handed or left handed people with the same ease (it is perfectly symmetrical). I don't think left handed people would be superbly comfortable with the MX500; I'm right handed so I can't really vouch for its left hand compatibility, or lack there of.

The construction on the MX500 feels and seems slightly sturdier. I have used the MX500 for about 2&1/2 months. As an apparatus, I like the MX500 more. It feels better and than Intellimouse which doesn't feel bad, but just not as form fitting (to my right hand) as the MX500.

Both the MX500 and the Intellimouse let you assign keystrokes and keystroke combinations to different mouse buttons. That is, you can assign DELETE to the 5th mouse button, or whatever you want to do. However, MS Intellimouse has an extra feature that MX500 does not have. The intellimouse software also lets you assign different keystrokes to different mouse buttons for different programs.

For example, You could bind the delete key to "kill" command in quake 3 arena, then set the Intellimouse software to recognize when Q3 is running in the foreground, and set the 5th mouse button to BE the delete key, while in Photoshop you could have that same 5th mouse button be your undo key, while in internet explorer you could have that same 5th mouse button be your forward button. That is GOLD to me (since Q3A does not recognize 5th or higher buttons on a mouse).

Unfortunately the MX500 does NOT do that. If you set 5th mouse key to be Delete, it's delete in Q3A, PS, IE, and everything else. Which isn't great, because BF1942 DOES recognize a 5th mouse button, and when using the Intellimouse the 5th mouse button is my parachute, but with the MX500, there is no 5th mouse button if I have it bound to be my delete key. Of course there is an easy fix, simply change my parachute key to delete or go into the MX500 software and set the button back to its default. But I think you can see how this is something of an inconvenience compared to MS solution. (What if you want to use Delete key for something else in BF1942 and you're going to be going back and forth between Q3A and BF?) This is just one plausible scenario; you of course will run into your own.

If Logitech would have devised similar functionality for their mouse, than hands down the MX500 would be the greatest USB optical mouse in the universe (for right handed people).

I use my computer for work and play. I'm on the thing nearly every waking hour, and a good pointing device is absolutely critical for me. I've long been a fan of logitech's devices, having worn out two trackballs and a mouse in the past, with never a problem. I picked this MX500 up a week ago, and I couldn't be happier.

Ergonomically this mouse is top notch. No matter how I hold this mouse it fits like it was made for me, the soft-feeling textured plastic (not rubber-coated like you may have heard) feels like pure quality, and the silver centerpiece has your fingers assuring the brain that this mouse is money well spent.

The software is a breeze to set up, and the buttons (eight in total) are all nicely configurable. There are two buttons I never use, because I find I have to stretch to reach them. The front side (forward) button, and the rear center (app switch) button. It's true that other people don't have the same trouble I do. These buttons are never pressed by accident and there are six other buttons within comfortable reach, so this is less of a complaint and more of an extra feature I don't use.

It never mis-tracks, and it never jumps around in any direction other than the ones I want it to. My scores in Unreal Tournament 2003 went up, and the additional sense of control is unexpected and welcomed. I find myself more confidantly whipping around my desktop too, the pointer is always where I want it.

There is no finer mouse, and I've tried a lot of them.

As a bonus, you can replace the red light with a blue one (void your warranty the day you buy it - I did!) and it still works great.

I got this mouse for Christmas, and so far I love it. After getting used to a wheelie mouse at work and not having one at home, I'd been meaning to pick one up for some time now. This mouse moves extremely smoothly over my mousepad, and has a cheerful looking red light shining out the back (palm) end. The only complaint I have with the mouse is that the two side buttons are too easily pressed while just moving the mouse around, especially when you have to pick up the mouse and reposition it. You have to make sure to grab the mouse at the base, below the buttons while you're moving it around or picking it up. Still, the side buttons are quite useful for web surfing. The thumb button takes you back a page, the finger button takes you forward. Of course, the button action can be customized to suit your needs with the Intellimouse software. Definitely a worthy addition for anyone tired of cleaning out those gunky rollers.

I have both the new IntelliMouse Optical and its predecessor, the IntelliMouse Explorer, both running on Macs. It's difficult to say which I like better, but I would give a slight nod to the Explorer because it fits my hand well, and since it is designed solely for right hand use, it's asymetric shape is more comfortable. I also find the outer "pinky" button on the Optical more difficult to press, although I don't use that button often (the inner button, which by default is set to "Back" in browsers, I use all the time.)

The Optical has the advantage of being less expensive, and its smaller size makes it a better choice for sticking in a PowerBook carrying case. It is also very comfortable, and its smaller size makes it feel a bit easier to manuever, though that's probably just psychological.

The IntelliMouse Mac software has been trouble-free for me, the only thing I wish it had (which the Kensington Mac driver offers) is a choice to configure a button to pop up a contextual menu to switch among open applications.

When the four button Kensington ADB mouse on my home machine wears out (as it undoubtedly will), I'll buy a third IntelliMouse to replace it.

I've had this mouse for over 2 years and haven't had any problems. I hot swap it between my old expendable 98se desktop (with the PS2 port adaptor) and my new XP pro laptop (USB plug) all the time and it works perfectly everytime and all buttons are fully functional. After using the two extra forward and back buttons I never want to go back to a 3 button mouse. If I had to pick nits, I'd say this mouse is actually a little big because I use a wrist rest and the mouse tends to bump into it. Otherwise an excellent all round mouse from Microsoft.

A mouse is a rather personal decision. People's tastes and requirements when it comes to mice (and keyboards) vary greatly upon what they do with their computer.

I tend to be very hard on mice; The Logitech MouseMan Wheel Optical is my third mouse in 12 months. Thus far I am very satsified with it.

The Ups: great feel. My previous mouse was the MS Intellimouse Explorer (the grey one). In contrast, the MS mouse felt very cheap to me. The tactile response on the Logitech is much better (the buttons have a nicer 'click' feel). In fact, the thumb button on the MS mouse broke (stuck ON, of course) which lead me to try this one. How it illuminates was also a nice surprise.

The Downs: Logitech makes a great piece of hardware, but I do not like their drivers as much as the MS mouse. The Logitech drivers do not work in all games the same way as the MS drivers do. Some games do not even register the wheel turning (very disappointing).

Overall: Probably the best mouse out there for the cost (or regardless of cost, for that matter). I love the feel and would recommend this mouse over any other that I've used to this point.

I have always been a big fan of Logitech. I previously used a Trackman Marble TOP, and was happy with this mouse for over 5 years. Then I found the Mouseman Wheel Optical, I had to try it!

When it comes to gaming, there just isn't a finer mouse! The buttons provide a good tactile response to mouse clicks, and if your a rightie (sorry lefties) the ergonomic design fits nicely into your hand. And of course being and optical mouse as well as USB you have a high level of precision when it comes time to aim.

Simply put I believe this to be one of the finest mice I have ever used, and there are not enough stars to give this mouse!

I purchased this mouse in June 2001, and it keeps on trucking. The most reliable mouse I have ever used. I am a heavy gamer so it went through a lot of utilization, but it's still responsive and solid.

With its optical sensor, this mouse avoids the pitfalls of gathering dust on the ball and wheels that commonly befalls traditional mechanical mice after a while.

No more cleaning required. Smooth operation on virtually any desk surface (well, I haven't tried glass or a mirror, but those would probably be less common, anyway).

This USB mouse comes with a PS/2 adapter, thus allowing for operation attached to newer, as well as slightly older equipment.

In terms of notebook mice, this mouse deserves my recommendation, since it is by far more ergonomical than Microsoft's Optical Notebook Mouse. The smaller form factor of the latter one tends to result in a cramped grip and operation, while the regular size of this mouse leads to a considerably more relaxed hold and smooth handling.

Save yourself the pain of trying to fumble with the notebook mouse and rather enjoy the same benefits of the optical sensor while being at ease.

With Microsoft's departure from a right-handed mouse design, this mouse now can be smoothly operated with either hand, without any ergonomical disadvantages. Switching the mouse buttons is but a few clicks away in the setup.

Rather than designating this mouse for notebook users, Microsoft might be well advised to consider repositioning it as "Optical Kids Mouse", since its overall size and handling is quite favorable for younger users with smaller hands.

I can't say enough good things about this product. I bought one of these because I was tired of my mechanical mouse sticking and hesitating on me at work, and having to repeatedly clean the ball and rollers every couple weeks, even though I am pretty much a clean freak at the office. This is no longer an issue for me since I switched to the optical mouse. It is extremely precise and it never, ever hesitates or sticks. What I didn't count on was how much I'd grow to depend on the scrolling wheel. This feature is so handy for scrolling up/down long web pages and documents that now I can't imagine being without it.

The optical mouse was such an improvement for me at work that I ordered two more of these a few weeks later to replace my mechanical mice at home. I now use this very same mouse everywhere I use a computer, and could not be more pleased.

This is a GREAT product, especially for the price. I've been struggling with a ball for far too long and I am seriously questioning why I haven't moved to optical yet. It is very accurate and it works on many surfaces. My bed, carpet, oh... and it even works well on my desk!!! I did notice it did not work well on a white book... but it did work well on a blue book.

This mouse is entry level. There are other versions (the one I have at work has buttons on the side for web page navigation and there is even a wireless one) but for the price, you cannot beat this quality.

Another plus is that if feels very comfortable and ergonomically correct in my hand.

If you are using a mouse with a ball on the bottom, you are really losing out. Consider this upgrade!!!

I have been using a touchpad for the past 2 years. I bought this mouse for my wife and tried it for the first few days. On Windows XP, the install is clean. But I was surprised to see that this mouse does not ship with a mousepad. An Optical mouse by virtue of it's technology should be used on a specific surface otherwise it results in a jerky movement. Also there was no instructions whatsoever to suggest the kind of surface to be used on.

It is very sensitive and people used to traditional mice or touchpads will take time to adjust.

What a relief to have a mouse which I don't have to clean the dirt out of! I got tired of having to occasionally clean the dirt (lint, dust) out of my old mouse so it can work properly again. This mouse is built differently underneath so it doesn't collect any dirt. The only thing you have to worry about is if the battery is running low. Your computer will notify you when the battery is running low, or you can simply click an icon on your desktop to check the battery level. The batteries seem to last a month or up to two months, depending on your computer usage. You might want to invest in a battery charger and rechargeable batteries so you don't have to keep buying batteries so much (you most likely use batteries for other items in your home too) throughout the year.

Of course the best feature for this mouse is that it's cordless. That's one less wire on your desk to get cluttered, entagled with. The equipment and software is fairly easy to install/use on your computer. I've noticed that the price for this item has dropped a bit since I bought it so this a better buy than ever.

1) It's made by Logitech, who make the best mice on the market. They always have current device drivers and most of the time you can just plug the mouse in to whatever system you are installing it on and have it work. They are the reference standard for my money.
2) It's cordless. Doug Englebart is a genius, but corded mice can sometimes be a pain in the.... You're always having to move the cord, or pick the mouse up and relocate it or, depending upon where your computer is you may not have enough cord. This is never a problem with the Logitech mice, the range is about six feet and the mouse will work if the transmitter is under a wooden desk.
3) It's optical. Optical mice are the only mice worth having. You don't have to worry about your mouse ball getting all gunked up or have a mouse pad to use the mouse. You never have that annoying behavior where the mouse ball isn't rotating properly, causing your cursor to skitter all over the screen. The sensitivity is fantastic.
In short you should buy one of these for every single one of your computers. Don't worry about conflicts though, the Logitech wireless system is smart enough to deal with having multiple cordless devices on the desktop.

I agree with nearly every reviewer below, except about the button action. I didn't find mine to be too heavy.

Positives:
--uses standard batteries: this is great, no need to pack the charging station or a cord, just an extra set of AA batteries. I use rechargeables to save money. Minor quibble: I wish they used AAA. They don't last as long but I can feel the weight difference. And packing my briefcase these days is like prepping for a hike on the Appalachian Trail, you really start to pay attention to every ounce.

--ease of installation (as noted below, plug it in and go to work, no need for the CD)
--ergonomics (comfortable)
--size of USB receiver (small)
--price (acceptable, though wouldn't mind about $10 less)
--wheel works great
--carrying case: a surprise; it's small and the neoprene is soft but durable and holds its shape. My last mouse was a felt, drawstring bag. It worked well, but this is a decided improvement.

Negatives
None, but I can suggest a couple of improvements.
--it doesn't seem to have a sleep mode after a few minutes of idle time. I've only had it a few days, so it's too soon to report on battery life and how the sleep mode issue affects that. The on/off is great, but I'd prefer to use that only when I pack it, not to shut off each night (I leave all my equipment on). My last mouse and the one my wife uses have contacts on the side of the mouse that you naturally touch and which "awaken" the mouse from its power-conserving state.
--I haven't had them yet, but I'd like to have the programmable fourth and fifth buttons people talk about in other mouse reviews and use for "Back" and "Forward" on Web pages.

Great mouse. Good value. Another plus for the Logitech brand.

I bought this mouse to replace by generic USB wheel mouse that I was using with my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop computer, which runs Windows XP Pro. This mouse was a breeze to install. There are two parts, the mouse and the receiver - can't get much simpler than that. Turn off your computer, plug the receiver into a USB port, put the 2-AA batteries in the mouse, turn on the mouse and fire up the computer. Windows XP Pro found the new hardware right away. To "synch up" the mouse, just press the Connect button on the receiver, then press the Connect button on the bottom of the mouse, install the software (CD provided) and off you go.

What I love about this mouse is that is doesn't feel like a tiny, notebook mouse. It is sturdy and has some weight to it. Another great feature is the ON/OFF button (THANK YOU LOGITECH!!) so you don't suck the life out of double A's or rechargeable batteries. Logitech also provides a neoprene soft case for your mouse. I have always used Logitech mice on my desktop and have always been happy with their products.

This mouse is a great laptop mouse. Before this i got a targus mouse which had a few technical difficulties so i got this mouse. This mouse is small, easy to install, and it is a plud in and play mouse...unlike other mice when you hafta restart the computer. This is the best wireless mouse for the best price
