Good retractable firewire cablePro's:
- convenient, small, retractable form factor...clean, simple design...no more cable messes
- easy to use...pull out the cable to desired length and it clicks into place...press a button to retract the cable
- both 6 pin to 6 pin, or 4 pin to 6 pin firewire capable (with included 4 pin adapter)
Con's:
- 4 pin adapter is a loose piece and could be lost/misplaced---this is the only reason I give 4 stars, instead of 5 stars
- labeling is a little cheap looking (stickers)...but that's being nitpicky
- a little expensive if all you want is a firewire cable but don't need the retractability

With friends like these...The other thing that came up AWOL was the player's audio/video connector cable. Having absolutely no desire to hear his pathetic attempts at explaining this omission, I grabbed a new one (this particular make & model, 'natch), and reconnected my player to my TV set, threw in a fave Trek-flick platter, kicked back, and watched the show. I was somewhat disappointed that I paid a few bucks more for the new cable than I did the old one, and there wasn't any improvement in picture and sound quality. But hey, at least I'm able to actually view my digital platters again; what more can a DVD-phile ask for?
Needless to say, if my friend ever wants to borrow my DVD player ever again, he's gonna hafta provide his own freakin' remote batteries and hook-up cable! And a security deposit, just to be on the safe side...

Cheap 5.1 SolutionThe Starlogic is very easy to set up. Just plug it in to a USB port. If you are using Windows 2000/XP, it automatically recognizes it. No drivers required. The built-in sound card was automatically disabled and sound output was sent to the Starlogic. The manual has a lot of grammatical errors as if it was written in a foreign language and translated to very bad English. There is one major step that was left out. You must go into the Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia and change the speaker setting to 5.1 Surround and then again in the configuration options in your favorite DVD player.
There are three buttons: MUTE, SUR, MIC. The SUR emulates surround sound ("Q-Space technology") if you are listening to music or whatever that was not encoded with Dolby Digital sound. It is automatically disabled if you are playing back DD sound. My biggest complaint is that it is not automatically re-enabled when you are done watching a DD-encoded movie. The MIC button toggles the amplification of the line-in port. On the enclosed CD is a copy of WinDVD 3.1, a speaker testing application, some really lame movie previews, and a no-name CD music ripping/burning application.
Overall, the sound isn't as good compared to my Koss C220 Home Theater. That could be the speakers, but I definitely have surround sound now. Anything is better than the cheap 2.1 and built-in laptop speakers I was using before.

Very disappointed with this
Almost kept this one.The toll-free helpline is a JOKE! It's all automated and when you finally get through all the number pressing, it's just a voice recording of exactly what's in the manual!! Why do they bother?? Their website's a joke, too...always errors, can't find pages, etc.
I returned this remote for the somewhat mediocre ONE FOR ALL UNIVERSAL 8 DEVICE LEARNING REMOTE. It comes with an IR extension so I can use the Satellite Remote in the Bedroom. At least it didn't have that irritating change-over to TUNER when I wanted to change the volume.
Suits my needs, but needs improvementDespite what other reviews have indicated, this remote CAN handle another components functions while in a different mode. For example, I set the remote's volume up/down keys to control the receiver's volume no matter what mode it's in. So even if I'm in TV or DVD mode, pressing the volume button will always control the volume on the receiver. This keeps the button-pressing to a minimum.
This remote is not without its flaws, however. As others have stated, the backlight is a nice feature, but the button to turn it on is hard to find in the dark. Plus, it makes a slight humming noise when its on. Another annoyance is that the DVD/VCR controls; ffwd, pause, stop, etc. are placed at the very bottom of the remote. This makes it very awkward to press these buttons, especially with one hand.
Another problem which seems to be a common among everyone is the clock resetting. This is a very common occurance on mine. I've given up on setting the clock because it resets itself at least 1-2 times a week. Thankfully, you don't lose any of your programmed functions when this happens. If it did, I would've returned it right away. I think the problem is directly related to the use of the backlight function. Poor circuitry perhaps?
Finally, some more macro buttons would have been nice. I can think of a million uses for this feature if there were more. This remote only give you 3, which isn't enough.
Overall though, I'm satified with this product. It does what it says, and all my other remotes are now in a cabinet.
