Excellent all-purpose printer
This printer is incredibly fast. Text pages literally come popping out. Color graphics take a little longer. Very sharp black text. Decent graphics on plain paper. Excellent photos on cheap bargain glossy photo paper. I haven't tried Canon photo paper pro yet. Easy to set up and use. I especially like the auto-power feature - the printer turns on when it's needed and turns off X minutes later (this needs to be set up in the printer properties).
Also, very important, Canon support in the past has been outstanding. I once had a problem with my Canon scanner, and after 10 minutes on the phone with them, they over-nighted me a replacement scanner. All I had to do was to put my old scanner in the box and call UPS for a pick-up. All shipping was paid by Canon, didn't cost me one dime.

The best printer I have ever owned!
I bought my Canon S750 Bubble Jet printer from ... and it's fantastic. The price was only {$$$} and shipping was free. Dollar for dollar no other company in the world can touch it. Why? Text printing is clean and sharp. This is important to me as I work in radio broadcasting and print many documents each day. Many other printers on the market at the same price will print photos as good as the Canon S750 but when they print text it never looks sharp. Graphics are very sharp on the S750 and the colors never bleed over. Your work always looks professional. I love the separate ink tanks. By purchasing your own ink in bulk you can fill just the ink tank that needs filling. The S750 has a separate print head so no more filling print head cartridges. This is a real hassle because if you shoot too much ink into the print head cartridge you ruin the cartridge. I'm sure you've been there and done that! I have! The separate ink tank feature will pay for the printer itself. The S750 also prints fantastic 4 X 6 and 8 X 10 prints. With the Canon S750 printer you really have one printer that does it all. I shoot film for CD covers on weekends of different recording artists. The prints are always awesome. Because this printer can print photos so well, you don't have to buy a printer for text jobs and a printer for photo work. Buy it! You won't be sorry.

Excellent Printer..!!!
I must admit this is one fine printer. All I can say is .. WOW..!! I'm impressed.

This printer prints great.!!! Printed some photos on the photo paper included, and they turned out spectacular. Even printing on some non-Canon branded paper gave pretty good results. Colors were really good for a printer with only 4 colors (some of the better photo printers use 6 colors). Regular text printed crisp and fast.!!

What really sold me on this printer are the cartridges. For one, they have a pretty long life. I've printed several photos (4x6 and 8x10) and cartridges seem to be in good condition. Another thing is the seperate color ink tanks. With most inkjet printers you have a black and a color cartridge. With this Canon you have the standard black cartridge, but the color is split into three different color cartridges. What this means to you is, if you run out of one color say yellow, you can just replace that one color cartridge and not have to replace the whole color cartridge (with the one color cartridge system if you ran out of yellow you'd have to toss the whole cartridge even though you still had say blue and magenta). This will save you some bucks..!!! Especially if your color cartridge costs around $30.

The software that comes with the printer is also quite cool. I especially like the Easy Photo Print application. It makes printing photos so easy. I mean it doesn't do all the editing and fixing of your photos (that's what Photoshop is for) but it does allow quick and easy printing of photos with it's automatic resizing (Just pick your paper size and print..!!)

Man you can't beat that for the price. Yeah it may be a little more than those $100 jobs but trust me. Pay the little extra, it does matter.

I was blown away
My fiance and I are both art directors and we bought this printer to primarily update the work in our portfolio's. Both of us were somewhat skeptical about the level of quality we would receive, being used to having high quality proofs in our books. Well it's amazing, but this printer produces very high quality stuff. Frankly, it's not easy to differentiate between the Epson print and a C-print sitting in a portfolio.

It's not the speediest printer in the world, but then I didn't expect it to be. If your like me, you won't bother to print on the "fast" setting much, when you get used to the primo quality of the "quality" setting.

The other thing I like is that it's really not that big of a printer considering it will print 13x19 paper. I had expected it to be much larger, but it fits pretty nicely in the exact spot my laser printer occupied.

Also, despite being a photo printer, it does text pretty well. I haven't printed out that much text, but the things I have printed on the "quality" setting, have looked pretty good to me.

The output I get from my Canon S300 digital elph are also great. I have pics up in my office and everyone is shocked when I tell them it's not an actual photo, but an epson print.

Photo Quality Excellent
This is, for me, a replacement for the older wide carriage Stylus Photo EX. It's quieter than the photo ex, and still slow (go for coffee while making big prints), but the results are worth the wait. Compared to a friend's Canon S9000, the photos have much more "pop" - better contrast (settable in the epson driver utility), exellent shadow detail, and overall, just look more like wet-processed photos than the Canon. I also like the paper roll holder on the Epson for panoramics, or continuous 4 x 6's. One other thing - my friend's canon is very fussy about the type of paper -- use the wrong one and the ink beads up and looks spattered. The epson is VERY tolerant, and I can use Kodak Premium Photo paper, or any of the other brands (like Konica, Ritz) that I've tried, and get really good looking prints. If you are looking to make photos, this is it. if you need a one-printer-does-all for printing your web-pages, email and memos, look elsewhere.

Pleased
I have owned the Epson 1280 for about three months now. I use it often to print photos I take with my Olympus E-10. For the money, I don't think you can beat this printer. I have tried others, Lexmark and H.P. and they don't compare. It prints very very high resolution photos but it does use lots of ink at the highest resolution. You will get fantastic prints using photo film but if you are looking for something more archival, I recommend only matte photo paper. Epson states in this format the archival life is about 20 years but I think 8 is probably closer to being correct.

There are better printers, but you would have to look in the professional range such as the Epson 5500 with the same resolution and archival qualities. It's also [much more]. For the money, ... I think without question this is the best photo printer on the market.

Excellent printer for the price!
I bought this printer as a color replacement for my black and white LaserJet. I was attracted by the 2880dpi resolution & claims of photo quality prints and laser-like black text. I was not disappointed. When used with quality inkjet paper, the printer performs as promised. Photographic results are amazing when glossy paper is used. These things are not so outstanding in the higher end printer market, but considering the slim price tag, this printer is extraordinary. Added features that I found useful are ink level monitoring and print area expansion. The USB connection option is very convenient as well. If you decide to purchase this printer, be sure to pick up a cable, as one is NOT included.

Great printer, amazing price
Any computers or periphials are usually as good as their cost. You get what you pay for... except in this case. There is absolutely NO printer that prints this good at such a low price. The quality on glossy paper is identical to a photo. I bought a digital cam, and thanks to the Stylus 880, I can use it to produce perfect photos. I never have to buy film again, only glossy paper and ink occasionaly, which will not cost nearly as much as film and developement. It is not just the quality that wowed me, though, it was the speed also. If you are just printing a paper or anything with text only, the 880 will spit it out in about 5 seconds. A 5 X 7 full color photo quality printout takes around a minute. And it is all done without disturbing a soul, since this is also one of the quietest printers out there. It has it all. Quality, speed, and it is quiet. In addition, Epson's ink cartridges are very competitively priced compared to those of their rival companies. And you know when you need to buy ink, because every time you print a page, a bar graph shows you exactly how much ink you have left, therefore you will never be caught needing ink in an emergency. Don't waste your money on slower and louder printers that have less quality and make more noise, buy an 880. Whether you have a digital cam or a scanner and want to make GREAT photos, or if you just want a quiet printer to print websites and documents, the 880 is a hit. Also, another printer that has the same quality and costs even less is the Epson Stylus 777. The only difference between the 880 and 777 is that the 777 is slower and much noisier. Either way, you are getting a phenomenal printer at an outstanding price. This is one of the few periphials where you don't get what you pay for. You get a lot more.

Wow! 50,000 sheets and still printing
I just went through another ream and looked back at my records and noticed that this printer has printed a minimum of 50,000 sheets of paper. It still works perfectly. If you can get your hands on this printer, I would definately recommend it.
As a Realtor, photographer, and student, I am constantly printing pages that need to be high quality, but also need to be printed quickly. That is the problem that I have found with many printers that I run into: they are either fast and low quality or slow and high quality. This printer is both fast and has high quality output. Not only that, but the ink for this printer is amazingly inexpensive through third party inks. I use inksell to buy mine, but I'm sure others work well too.

Very good photo printer.
I had just bought a new digital camera and I was looking to upgrade from my old Epson printer to get photo quality printouts. I research a lot of printers, read reviews, went to stores to get test prints, and decided on the Canon S800 based on reviews and it's individual ink cartridge system. Overall, I am very happy with the results. Setup was very easy, about 20 minutes from the box to printing my first picture. Very fast and whisper quiet; it took about 10 seconds to print a 4X6 photo on regular mode from a 600K JPEG file, about 30 seconds for a 8X11 for the same file. Results were excellent, very hard to distinguish from a real photo, no visible dots at all, colors were sharp and life-like. However, the results vary greatly with the paper that you use, I got the best results from the Canon photo pro paper and Epson glossy photo paper. I got very grainy results with HP and JetPrint photo paper; I've tried to tweak the settings from the Printer properties, but the pictures do not come out as good as on the Canon and Epson paper. Canon paper is also hard to find, I have only found it on sale online and only the 8X11 paper. Also I have not been able to figure out how to make it print borderless. Plain text printouts on plain paper is a bit fuzzy, but I have not tried it with the glossy inkjet paper. Overall a very good photo printer if you use the right paper and a so-so printer for plain text.

Awesome Photo Printer
After doing extensive on-line research and reading virtually every "professional" and user review available, I decided to purchase an S800. I was also considering an HP DeskJet 960 and Epson 890, but the overwhelming praise for the S800 won me as a Canon convert. We also own a DeskJet 722C (which still does an admirable job on HP photo paper) but we wanted a true photo-quality printer. The prints from the S800 are truly AMAZING. As we are primarily using it for photo printing, we are printing almost exclusively on Canon's Photo Paper Pro .... One magazine review said that the S800 came closer to dye sublimation output quality than any other ink jet printer they had tested, and I totally agree. I won't go into the print speeds - its photo output is almost certainly several times faster than any other inkjet you've ever used. I would also like to mention that Canon's print driver is excellent. Not only does it give you a multitude of print options, but it is fast (at least compared to the 722C and 970C drivers). We are still using a 333MHz with 160MB RAM and making selections in the different printer setting screens is much faster than with the DeskJets. It sometimes takes 5-10 seconds for the driver to process a new selection (such as changing from Normal to Best print mode, or portrait to landscape mode) whereas the Canon takes less than 1 second. While other users with faster PCs may not be able to appreciate Canon's efficient driver, those of us who are holding on to older computers welcome it. I have seen first hand and read about the best HP and Epson have to offer. Anyone replacing a printer two years old or older would be amazed with the output quality from their printers. But, for the very best ink jet photo output available today, the S800 wins hands down.

Nice quality color prints
I have had this now for almost 4 years and it still works perfect. I probably printed over 200 photos already and 100's of business cards without errors.

I had a cannon Multipass that was a piece of crap, way back. I took a chance on this and so far its paying off.

I like the individual ink cartridges!

Canon S9000......Truth in advertising
Right out of the box the Canon S9000 is everything they claim.....fast, quiet, and most importantly Great Photos ! I've had my eye on the Epson 1280 for a while but when the S9000 came out I'm glad I waited. My first printer (other than a dot matrix) was a Canon BJC-610 and it was a great reliable printer and I tend to stick with brand names when I've had good luck with them. As stated in the company literature set-up is straightforward and simple, I run XP-pro and had the printer hooked up, ink installed and printing in about 15 minutes. The print alignment page came out very well and no adjustments were necessary. The first print out was on plain paper and had excellent detail. Next was a picture I took of my son and his girlfriend at a nightclub, it was approx 1.2mb and was taken with a flash on a Kodak dc4800 camera. I printed on a generic brand glossy photo paper, 8 1/2" X 11" the result was outstanding, great resolution, fantastic color, black background was perfect. Next was a print I downloaded from the internet, a 5.4mb aerial view of the World Trade center. I printed on Kodak 11" X 17" glossy photo paper. Wow! the resolution was out of this world. crisp details I took it to a friend who is a professional photographer and he was very impressed.

Now for the bad news, the only reason I didn't give it five stars. The software leaves quite a bit to be desired, no print preview! When I'm printing on paper that costs more than a dollar a sheet I'd like to see my layout before I print. I know with time I'll get used to the software but most likely I'll end up getting a third party software such as photoshop.

Overall I give this printer two thumbs up. Good looks, quiet, fast, and most importantly Great pictures !

Well worth the money
I hesitated to buy this printer because of the price, but now that I have it, I don't regret my decision at all. I read reviews for almost every printer and printer/fax/copier combo out there. Taking everything into consideration, this looked like the best printer. So far, it has been far superior to the HPs and Epsons I've used in the past.

I love the individual ink tank idea, although I haven't had it long enough to change any tanks yet. Some people complain that the tanks are small. Yes, they are a bit smaller than many others, but there are six of them, so the total amount of ink appears to be much more than the printers with one or two tanks.

There is indeed a Print Preview option in the Properties window on the "Main" tab. I have used it and it works great.

The print quality is awesome, especially on photo paper. I had to do some color tweaking on some of the pictures, but that was due to poor lighting in the digital photo. It prints black and white or sepia photos beautifully with no adjustments. I've seen some complaints that the black and white text on regular paper is fuzzy, but I printed my tax returns, and it looked better than my Epson ever printed anything.

Setup was easy and the software is so far the best part. There are three programs altogether, but the Canon ZoomBrowser EX is my favorite so far. It allows me to see a thumbnail of all of my digital photos, and organize them into folders. I can also print index prints or scrapbook pages or just arrange one or several photos onto one sheet. Before, I only had Adobe PhotoDeluxe, which forces you to open your photos one at a time--there are no thumbnails, so if you're file names aren't descriptive, you don't know what you are opening. The ZoomBrowser EX opens Adobe PhotoDeluxe for me so I can edit the photos directly from that program--so I can see all my photos, and choose which ones to edit or enhance.

Another bonus: the printing is very fast. The Epson I used to have (it now sits in the garage) warmed up or cleaned the print heads every time I used it after sitting idle (taking often 2-5 minutes). This drastically cut the print time, since I didn't use the printer that often. This Canon prints without having to warm up, even after sitting idle. It's a wonderful thing.

Beautiful prints, reliable, and a print preview too!
The other reviews here say it well. I switched to the S9000 after tiring of wasting half of every color ink cartridge on cleaning cycles on my Epson. The S9000's been 100% reliable, without a single clog. Photo quality is on par with Epson's -- that is, superb. And the printer driver's been updated since the spotlight review was written -- this version does include a Print Preview feature. The 13x19 prints are absolutely stunning! And this thing is amazingly fast.

Just two downsides. First, you need to be sure to use the right paper. With Canon Photo Paper Pro or Epson's papers, prints look fantastic. With Kodak and some other brands, the ink pools and you get a "spotty" appearance. Second, the printer won't do borderless prints at 13x19. The borderless 8x10 and 4x6 prints look great, though.

Good printer
Fast shipping. Print quality for photos is excellent, some of the lighter colors appear washed at times. Prints borderless 4x6 prints from a secondary photo paper tray (no switching the main paper tray) quality excellent. Regular printing quality is excellent, although much the same as my four year old HP 722C inkjet. Has front USB port for connecting a HP camera and printing directly from the camera (I don't have one, so haven't tried it.) Also can print from six different types of media cards directly. The 7550 came with some useful software (photo management and custom printing software) - I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a solid photo printer, although it is probably more expensive than some other models on the market.

All the pieces come together in this top of the line printer
I have owned several HP and Epson photo quality printers.
Each has been pretty good, but had one or two annoyances
that grew more bothersome over time. Particularly as
consumer digital cameras have improved to the 3 and 4
megapixel level, it was necessary to do something about
the quality of home photo printers. I think HP had the
farthest to go and they have closed the gap and taken a
wide lead with the 7550. The move to seven inks (from
HP's usual 4)in this model and the ability to go as
high as 4800 X 1200 dpi, has answered my concerns about
larger prints from my 4 megapixel Canon camera. This
printer also has a simple loading mechanism for 4x6
snapshots and I really like the new print cartridge
access (to the right of the paper trays), which means
I no longer have to drag the printer out from under the
shelf to open its top and change a cartiridge. This,
plus the front paper loading mechanism, makes the 7550
a real low profile machine. The LCD and controls allow
you to print pictures without the computer, though that
is not a big deal to me. The printer is quiet and fast
and I haven't given it a picture yet that it hasn't
handled with beautiful results. HP claims the new inks
and papers it is releasing with these new model printers
will last 65 years. I'll get back to you about that
claim in 2067.

TOP OF THE LINE!
This printer far exceeded my expectations. We had been looking for a good quality photo printer since I take mostly digital photos. We did a lot of searching around and checking reviews and finally settled on the HP 7550. We were a little hesitant because of the price, but it is well worth every penny! We bought it on December 27th, and I've already printed quite a number of photos. The installation was seamless and very simple, and the printer was ready to go within minutes. The photos print very fast, and they come out with no layering of ink as was noticeable with our old Epson. There is no waiting for the photos to dry, either.....a very nice improvement. These photos look like they were printed in a photo lab!!! The 4x6 borderless photo printing is very easy and looks great. Other pluses include separate paper trays for your HP 4x6 photo paper (200 sheets of HP Premium 4x6 paper come with the printer) and regular 8-1/2" x 11" printer paper.....no switching, and there is even a separate slot for envelopes. This printer is a little wider than average because it will hold all three ink cartridges, photo, tri-color, and black, and you never need to switch out cartridges depending on what you want to print. The door is also on the front, not the top, so it's very easy to access the cartridges.

Another great feature is the ability to print directly from your camera's memory card.....no more cords and downloads to deal with. It takes several different types of memory cards. Just pop the card in and your pictures come up on the LCD screen in seconds. You can toggle through your photos, select the ones you want to print, and even adjust the brightness, zoom, rotate, add fancy borders and frames, etc. You can also press the "save" button and the photos are automatically saved over to your computer. Browse to select the file you want them in, and it will even sort into separate folders for the month in which they were taken!! I can't say enough about this printer. I was able to download, print, and save my photos while my daughter was busy on the computer. What a time saver! The quality of the photos is excellent, and everything prints VERY fast. I would recommend this printer to anyone!!

Was OK while it worked
I had this printer for about one year.
The GOOD:
The inks are really good and long lasting. You can drop water on them one minute after printing and they won't fade.
The printer accepts many different kinds of paper sizes and printing media.
The drivers have lots of settings and you have enough flexibility to be creative.
The BAD:
The drivers have lots of settings and you never know if you have chosen the right one, and at times, when the collors are wrong and any setting seems to be wrong, after you go through tons of ink and paper, you might have to do as I did, take the pictures to a photo shop, in a few minutes, at a fraction of the cost when you add the waisted paper, ink and time.
Printing is very slow. A real picture of 8x11 takes "forever" (10-15 min). (How can they claim that the printer is fast? Fast comparing with what? Drawing the page by hand?)
The ink cartridges clog constantly and one every other page comes out with random tiny red lines across. Customer support didn't want to talk to me unless I paid, and then they just told me to take the printer to a repair shop (After 20 minutes of waiting and paying the fee, the service call was over in about 30 seconds). Waist of money and time calling customer support. A repair shop will charge to diagnose and repair the printer (change the printer heads and allign them) more than what a new printer costs today.
I have no choise but to buy a new printer now.
Oh, and another thing, in one year I mingled with it enough to get acceptable pictures out, but I could never get on the paper the same collors that I would see on the screen. I got some special pictures with all the basic collors and different mixings, and to save my life I could not set the printer to reproduce those collors. I waisted days and nights downloading upgrades and changing settings, I bought the printer's tech book (I am an electronics engineer by trade, so I HAD to read the manual :-)).
Guess what... I am looking at Canon and HP now.

Great printer
I've had this printer for about a year, and have had no problems at all - no paper jamming, no clogged cartridges, and no software related problems. As far as using ink, if I print photos, I expect it to use ink - otherwise I'd get a blank sheet of paper. The quality and color of the photos I print is outstanding - friends and family can't tell if I printed them, or if I had them printed at a lab. On any printer, the paper used for photos makes all the difference in the world - so I use Epson's premium glossy photo paper, as well as their heavyweight matte paper - and the results are excellent. This is my second Epson printer - the first was a 640 - and when the time comes to upgrade, I'll definitely buy another Epson.

Great performer on more than photos!
This is my third Epson printer, purchased in June, 2001, just before a trip to Italy where I planned to take lots of digital shots. The first Epson lasted me 4½ years, and the second one, a Stylus Color 800 (refurbished) is still going strong as my everyday "workhorse" for non-photo applications after 4 years. After poor HP experiences, I am absolutely sold on Epson.
When this printer is given Epson papers to work with, it produces the most stunning (and lightfast) photos imaginable. I've actually taken some of the same digital images to a local drugstore and printed on their Kodak machines, and BOY, are mine superior!
Well worth the price even though it has been superceded by faster models with individual ink tanks.
I've heard fairly often that this is an ink drinker, but that hasn't been my experience. As long as you set the proper settings in the printer options panel depending on the job, they'll last a reasonable length of time.
This one will keep me happy for a few more years, I trust.

Very Good and Highly Recommended Printer
I own a Canon Digital Rebel and needed a new printer that could handle printing high quality photos with a good life span. The HP Photosmart 7960 handles picture from my camera with no problems whatsoever. The prints come out better than from a photo finisher and thats with just using the settings from the printer software; I have not even begun to use Photoshop on the pictures!

I checked out the Epson Stylus R800 as well, but for an extra $100 you actually lose some features with the Epson. The R800 prints will last 80 years on Epson Paper and the HP Photosmart 7960 prints will last 73 years on HP plus paper...no deal breaker there! In addition the Epson does not have flash card slots...but the HP does!

The HP Photosmart 7960 inks are a bit pricey...especially the No.59 Grey Cartridge for photos. I printed only (3)-4"x8" prints and at least 10% of the cartridge is gone already. But from what I can see the other manufacturers are playing the same games with ink.

Overall, I highly recommend this printer for its features, software, price and high quality photo printing! The only con as I mentioned would be the price of ink, especially the No.59 Grey Cartridge for photos. Good luck and happy printing!

Great Printer
One thing a lot of people do not realize is that the reason why the ink cartridges are so expensive is b/c the manufacturers sell the printers usually at lower than cost and then they recoup their sales through the accessories such as paper and ink cartridges. Yes, it may seem to be unscrupulous, but HP and all the others are in the business of making money. As for the person who had problems printing envelopes, remove all the paper and use the paper guides and resize them to the envelope. I've had no trouble printing envelopes with my 7960.
One feature that people have also failed to mention is even though the memory card slots are there so you don't need the computer to print your photos, they also save you the trouble of attaching your camera to the computer since you can move your pictures from your memory card to your hard drive since the printer also acts as a removable drive.
everyone has been blown away when I tell them that I printed these pictures at home, and i find that the pictures that it prints are better than when I took my memory card to wal mart. Plus, it was quicker. It was no problem using my Sony digital camera with my HP printer.
One more thing, buy the printer at Sam's or Wal-Mart as it is only $187.

I love my HP Photosmart 7960
I was looking for an 8 1/2 by 11 inch borderless printer for producing high quality double sided product brochures. I bought an Epson Stylus Photo R800. WRONG thing to buy. It does 8 1/2 by 11 and it does borderless printing, but NOT on 8 1/2 by 11 media. The largest borderless print media is 8 by 10, and no one makes that in two sided print surfaces. I returned the Epson and got the HP. What a relief, it does exactly what I want and is not finicky, lots of options for acceptable paper. I did have some trouble installing software however. I had to shut down and remove all other USB devices and then load the printer before it would install properly. Otherwise 5 stars.

The Era of the Disposable Laser Printer
The GOOD:
-Print quality is excellent for both text and graphics . . . even compared with ... HP brand networked laser printers. Note that I'm making this comparison running the Samsung in "Toner Saver" mode.
-Easy to set up, including USB and printer drivers.
-Toner Save mode . . . supposedly saves toner, and output quality is not degraded significantly.
-FAST

The BAD:
-8MB of RAM (and this is NOT upgradable) If you print a lot of graphics, you might want to choose some other printer. Note that the ML-1450 comes with only half as much RAM as the ML-1430. . . but you can add an EDO SIMM to the 1450 to bump it up as high as 68MB! So if you print graphics, the 1450 would be worth the extra money.
-Will probably need to be replaced at roughly 50,000 pages printed. For more information, read the 'troubleshooting' section of the owner's manual, page 7.5
-Does not include a FULL toner cartridge. Samsung isn't the only manufacturer that pulls this stunt. The 'starter' toner cartridge is only about 1/3 full, apparently.
-No printed user manual. Reading the manual on the computer screen is a pain. Printing the manual is an option, but it will use a significant percentage of your "starter" toner cartridge.
-Ugly promo sticker on front of printer can NOT be removed without leaving a horrible gluey mess!
-No "sleep mode" indication (How do you tell it's sleeping when it looks like it's still on? Lights don't turn off, change color . . . or even dim when it sleeps.)

Considering the price, I'd have to say this is an excellent value in a laser printer. You have to think of it as a throw-away though. Evaluating it as a long-term workhorse, I'd have to give it 3 stars, at best. But as color laser printers are quickly becoming affordable, you probably won't need this printer to last very long anyway. In the meantime, it is a GREAT printer, with a few minor problems. So I gave it four stars.

I think this would be perfect for the average home user who uses the Internet, basic office applications . . . and needs to print a few resumes occasionally.

Great overall printer for the price
We've been using the ML-1430 for three months now and absolutely love it. It's a great overall printer, excellent print quality even in Toner Saver mode (slightly lighter than regular mode). The toner drum supplied with the printer lasts about 1000 pages or so - even with the Toner Saver mode turned on.
This is hooked up to work with three PC's on a wireless network. (XP, Win98, Win2K). Setup was straightforward. All drivers, manuals etc are available on www.samsungusa.com.

Issues: The buffer is small - 8 MB and is not upgradeable. Poses a problem while printing large pdf documents - takes a while to spool to the printer.
No duplex printing!
Labels and envelopes can be a challenge with this printer. Envelopes sometimes get stuck.
Overall: Great little laser printer for home office use. Small footprint, fairly quiet operation, great print quality, economical - about 3 c a page. Would not hesitate recommending this outstanding printer.

Don't believe the bad reviews
Who are these people who are giving this printer bad reviews? Six months ago I bought two ML-1430s, at a price of under $200 each. I bought one for myself, and one for my sister, who is very smart, just not a "computer person." We have both been absolutely beyond pleased.

SET UP: It took my sister less that 5 min. to set hers up by herself, and as I said, she knows very little about the technical aspects of computers. I am running mine on my home wireless network. No problems with the setup or the connection.

PRINT QUALITY: I print a lot of b/w documents from PageMaker and MS Word. I've been a graphic designer for 15 years, so I know what a good printout should look like. This printer is fine for everyday home use. If you want crisp, superfine graphic quality on glossy paper, go to Kinko's and pay for it, because they have the printer that costs $20,000. For $200, the ML-1430 will meet 99% of you b/w printing needs.

TONER CARTRIDGE: I'm still on the "starter cartridge" that came with the printer six months ago. Replacement cartridges (the full-meal deal, not the starter) can be had for $50-$60.

RELIABILITY: Never had a paper jam. Envelopes are a snap (if you remember to flip the switch so that the envelope outputs to the front of the printer, rather than the usual top output). Yes, it does take the printer 30 seconds to warm up when you haven't printed anything for a while, but if you can't wait 30 seconds for a laser printer to warm up, you have issues. Regarding the reviews here that say the printer burns up after a couple weeks and/or just stops working, all I can say is, "Huh?" Either Samsung made a bipolar batch of printers - a bunch of really good ones and a bunch of really evil ones made IN THE SAME FACTORY, or these people are just mistreating their machines. I don't know. I have had zero problems.

I say, buy it.

What a deal!
I was hesitant to purchase this printer as it doesn't cost all that much and is an HP printer. HP always meant more [money] but great quality to me. Well, this printer is a bargain. As long as it meets your needs (no manual paper feed, USB interface only, less feature rich) it is a great value. I'd had no problems with it, and it works great.

There are a few points to accept before considering this purchase. First, the lack of a manual paper feed means that to feed envelopes or special paper you have to mess with the primary feed. E.g., to feed envelopes you empty the paper bin, adjust to envelope size, feed the envelope, readjust to the paper feed sizing, and reinsert paper. No simple process.

Second, the paper feeding mechanism is less than industrial. While I have had no problems at all, I sense that it would not stand up to heavy use. E.g., it fine for a SOHO but not for something larger. Consider an HP Laserjet 1200 if that's your environment.

We use it at home attached to a Windows ME laptop, and we have 3 other PCs (running Windows 98, 95, and XP) that all print to it successfully over our home network. Printer output quality is great. I highly recommend this printer.

Great Printer!
I bought this printer a year and half ago when the IIIp started giving me problems. I went for HP since I'd had such a great experience with the last printer and this one has not let me down. I'm not sure if those that have had problems with this printer have just used it more, but I print about 60 to 70 pages per week and mine has been just fine. So, if you're looking for a printer to use at home that won't be getting very heavy use, I would definitely recommend this printer. I thought it was well worth it when I bought it for 300... It's a much better deal now.

Such a pleasure
My 12-year-old Apple laser printer still works just fine, but no one makes a cable to connect it to my PC. My office use is just a bit too intense for inkjets, with their inadequate and expensive cartridges and flimsy, jam-prone construction. I went out to pick up a new ...inkjet cartridge, found this printer on sale for a very low price, and brought it home instead of the cartridge.

Set up and installation on my Windows 98 system were completely painless. Despite the rather unorthodox software arrangement, I have been using the Laserjet 1000 for a variety of tasks--- 50- and 100-page reports, scanned photographs, graphics, faxes, print-outs from the internet, maps, etc.--- with no problems at all. The machine is quiet and prompt and copies are very sharp and crisp. The Laserjet actually fits into my rather cramped office more comfortably than my smaller HP Inkjet. Such a pleasure to have this printer after a series of makeshift and inadequate arrangements.
