Mixed bag
Works well with a few quirks* You can duplex copy a document using the front panel buttons (i.e copy a double sided page without feeding it through twice) but you cannot duplex scan into the computer - so if you have a double sided document you want to scan, you have to scan each side manually. This is a restriction in the driver the scanner could do this but HP chose to artificially restrict it.
* Printing is very expensive using HP cartridges and they run out very fast. Thankfully there are alternatives:
- Refill kits, the one made by www.inktec.com is the best - but still pretty complex to use.
- 3rd party cartridges - AFAIK inktecshop are the only people to sell them at present, see -
(...)
* This unit is HUGE. Don't count on being able to put it on your desk, we keep it on it's own table.
Great for an all in oneCons - Quite large; though on a separate printer stand, this is not a consideration; photo quality while quite good, is not up to the 6 ink photo printers;
If your primary focus is photos - this is a tri color ink cartridge, not the 6 color - not quite as vivid colors that you would get with some of the photosmart. You might also look at the HP 6110 if photos are you main focus.
This printer more than lived up to its expectations. Install on an XP mahcine did take about 3/4 hour which is more than your standard printers. After one days use this has proven to be a good investment. Quite pleased overall

Ink problems make this printer very expensiveWhen the cyan ink ran out, I tried to print in black only. It would not.
I replaced the cyan ink, and it still would not print. It indicated it needed black. Back to the store, and I bought a whole set this time. After replacing black, it called for the other two. Finally, after replacing all, it printed again--in black only or in color. The ink was Epson ink. Epson Help just figured they all ran out together. Even the first time, I knew they wouldn't all run out, by coincidence, at exactly the same time.
This has happened twice more now, and I am replacing the printer. It will be cheaper. I will not want to risk another Epson product, although I liked them a lot years ago.
Very nice printerNow while I have not done a lot of text on this I did try printing out some text pages on it, and the quality is good, not "laser sharp", but then no ink jet is "laser sharp." It looks about as good (or bad, depending on how you look at things) as what other ink jets produce, so it will not replace my laser printer.
Pros:
Great photo printing
Quiet
Fairly fast
Cons:
None for for what I am using it for.
Over all I think it is a great printer and I highly recommend it! Especially when paired with a laser printer, like the Samsung ML-1710 (which can be had for a similar price as the C84).
Photos Look FantasticI think I made a great decision. The photos from this printer look fantastic. While it's true that you can't get >>super<< glossy prints from it, the prints on glossy photo paper aren't matte. I'd call them "semigloss", and I like them. I don't see any dithering problem, either. So far, I've used the C84 to print on Ritz Camera brand "Professional Photo Glossy Ink Jet Paper" (similar to Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper), "Epson Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper", plain paper, and the 2 sheets of "Epson DuraBrite Ink Glossy Photo Paper" included with the printer. Results are excellent on all these media - even plain paper. I haven't seen better results on plain paper. I even printed on the back side of the Epson Ink Jet Paper, and - I kid you not - it looks better there than on the front where you're supposed to print. The very slightly yellow back side adds warmth to the photo. There's no bleed through, so you can print on both sides of the Epson paper. I didn't try this on the plain copier paper because it was thinner, and you could see through the back too easily. I stuck a plain paper print under the water faucet and soaked it. As advertised, that had no effect on the ink. After drying, the paper was wrinkled, but the image looked fine.
I always put my best pictures in clear archival sheet protectors, and, behind such glossy plastic or glass, you'd never know the DuraBrite prints were not super glossy. Advertisements say the C84 can do border-free printing on "8x10" paper. I was pleased to discover that it can do so on 8-1/2"x11" photo paper as well. It can NOT print border-free on plain paper or ink jet paper - apparently, border-free printing requires thick paper - but it does get much closer to the edges than my old printer, leaving about 3/16" borders on the short edges and 1/8" borders on the long edges.
I'm a happy camper. Don't be afraid to buy this printer for photo-printing.

Ink Cartridge is faulty- never worked
A great little printer at a value priceFirst off, the quality of printing was surprising for a standard, 4 ink printer, even on digital photos. For photo prints, does it perform as well as, say, an HP Photosmart 7960 with its 8 inks (which is over 4x the cost)? Of course it doesn't. But for routine use, even on the occasional photo, it's really not bad.
When in its normal printing mode, it's not a speed demon, but it does perform reasonably well, and is typical of printers in its class.
On the up side, consumables for this printer are remarkably affordable, providing somewhat of a disincentive to pursue refill kits. They also seem to have a fair and reasonable number of prints per cartridge change. But if you do choose to refill, I've found the print cartridges in the i250 refill easily and effectively, free of print-counter chips (so popular in Epson's printers these days) that are such a pain.
And speaking of Epson, recent Epson inkjets I've used will end-up with clogged print nozzles if the printer sits unused even for only a couple of days. Not so here; I've gone weeks between prints, and it fires-up and works perfectly each time.
Also a plus is the printer's compact size. While you still need to allow space for paper movement, when not in use, the top folds down and it's small, shoebox size let's you put it most anywhere.
Truly, at this price, almost anyone can afford one, and it'd be money well spent in my book.

I like it!!!The very best feature is that it will print the same pages that I used on my old Epson inkjet. I had tried an Epson laser printer as well as a Xerox laser printer (at Kinkos), and they both scrambled my spacing and line blanks very badly when the document was done in the New York font. (Xerox was much better than Epson.) My NEC 1400 has no problem with New York font, so I'm thrilled to not have to re-do dozens of forms in a different kind of font to please a printer.
I had foolishly believed a local chain office supply store who told me I'd have the printer delivered the next day, so I didn't buy it from Amazon. I did order a scanner from Amazon, almost a week later, and it arrived the same day as that so-called next day delivery. That has convinced me that from now on I order only from Amazon. And I love this review forum!!

Fantastic printerThen I just put in the driver CD and followed the prompts. I shared it with my wifes WinXP Home Dell and we were printing just like that.
It's quiet and fast and best of all prints outstanding color photos from our digital camera.
We purchased a second one for my wifes office without hesitation!
Superb upgrade...In March 2004 I bought the HP 5650, and it is a much better performer than the Lexmark it replaced. Installation was easy, though the setup program took a while to install the drivers (strange, as it was running on a brand new HP Pavilion).
I have printed several different things, including a flight ticket and two photos, on standard printing paper. The 5650 prints quietly, the ink dries quickly and most importantly the quality of the prints is superb. My parents were shocked that I printed a photo with such great quality, on an inkjet printer. They thought I bought a color laser!
Although the installation was a bit tedious, the print quality is great. Taking into account the low price makes my purchase all the better. I highly recommend the HP 5650.

5 stars if you're a computer whiz - 3 stars if you're notHowever H-P changed its model names and I couldn't find another 4L or anything that seemed equivalent. Also the Minolta was 3 times cheaper than any H-P model so for this second printer I took a gamble as both Minolta and its QMS subsidiary have been around for years and enjoy a good reputation.
It's a bit unfair to compare a 2001 Minolta with a 1995 H-P, but Hewlett-Packard has become *the* standard for reliability and quality. The Minolta turns out to be even better than my H-P in performance and output, although some of the plastic parts seem a bit flimsy and may not last 5-6 years. The printout is as good as H-P's for text and better for pictures. The Minolta also prints out faster and has some unique, interesting and useful features such as the ability to print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper.
Also, for those who are short on desk space, the Minolta's footprint is about half my H-P's.
The physical installation was a breeze, but the software installation was a nightmare. There is supposed to be a CD to perform the installation, but it was missing. I was able to download the drivers but the process, and the selection of the proper driver is not obvious. Also I'm stuck with about 8 megs of downloaded and unzipped files cluttering my hard drive and I'm not sure which are necessary and which I could delete.
After installation, I experienced two major bugs (the readme.txt file covered them both but I suffered 3 hours of frustration before I got to that file as a last resort). The manual is very sketchy and does not cover the printer's special features.
The setup installs a nice little program called Printer Console, but it is totally undocumented and you're totally on your own to discover even its existence. And its help file is at times ludicrous...
All in all I would rate the Minolta 1100L as a 5-star if you are a very experienced computer user (or have access to one) and 3-star if you're not. And if you buy it, be aware that the needed supplies don't seem to be available from anyretailer at this point; you have to order them on-line from qms. (It's not clear in the product description, but you DO get enough to get going already installed in the printer)...
Good printer, but won't work with Windows 2000 SP4!Unfortunately its Win2K driver is NOT compatible with Service Pack 4. As soon as you send anything to it Windows 2000 gets a BSD (blue screen of death) and reboots. Your only option is to uninstall SP4 (or don't install it if you haven't yet). Being that its a discontinued model I doubt Minolta will bother to release a new driver. I believe it still works with XP though.
Other than that its a very good printer.

Oh Brother! Lousy software and UI!While the mechanics and electronics of the unit seem reasonable, the print speed fast, and the unit very quiet when not in use, the software and documentation just flat-out stinks... The installation process was buggy, and even when finally installed, the "tools" they give you to scan, print, fax, copy and manage the printer from your PC (as opposed the printers front panel) are primitive, lacking any help screens, buggy, slow, and do not play well with other PC applications. Brother, develop some real specifications for what this software needs to do as well as looking at how other vendors create a polished user interface, then hire (or outsource) a good development team to complete these tasks!
Till then... the 8500 get's returned and I'll buy another HP and live with the slightly higher cost, slightly slower ink-jet engine.

Good item for the price, but boy is it LOUD!
Right now the best choice for AIOGenerally I like Canon inkjet printers. HP has the head on the cart (expensive) and Epson has it on the printer (once clogged, must go back to Epson for service). Even worse with Epson: it uses expensive ink to clean head all the time, even if you don't print anything. I have thrown out 3 or 4 Epson inkjet printers in last couple years and that's why I bought the Brother laser and never wanted to try inkjet again.
Canon changed my mind. It uses a replaceable head and ink is dead cheap. So I bought a i350 for $49 and I love it - very good photo and text, and it is tiny enough to sit on the top of my tower computer saving my clowded room. But Canon AIO such as MP360 looks so ugly to me (my 12-yr old and some reveiwers said it is the coolest though), and its prints are too wet (i.e. drinks ink).
I considered the Brother MFC3840CN for its built-in network and separated color carts for only $199. But after playing it in a store, I found it was like Epson: once there is a paper jam, ink fluds to everywhere; head is fixed to printer; text prints are no compare to HP.
So, I turned to HP and tried the PSC 1210 for $99. The main problem is speed: way too slow for my old 266MHz laptop. Draft mode is fast enough but quality is not good enough. The $150 1350 has more modes to choose from and the fast normal mode (300x300) is fast and good enough. But, this 5510 is only $30 more than 1350, just slightly wider (1 to 2 inches) but has everything - ADF, Fax, etc.
Seems HP has realised its crappy software, so now there is an option for driver-only installation. I downloaded and installed the 40GB driver-only file from HP website and I can use all the functions without problem (printing, scanning, etc.) and I do can share the printer between my XP/2000 PCs.
Although Canon inks are much cheaper, but I think the HP ink will last much longer, especially I use mostly black ink only and fast normal mode. I also compared 5510 to PSC 2175 and it seems to me 5510 uses much less ink.
As long as the ink will last long enough, I'd say this 5510 is currently the best choice for its compactness (very light too), good price ($175 @ Staples), very quiet printing (very loud at loading though), superb graphics and text prints (better than all others I've tried in stores), speed (especially @ 300x300) and full features (fax, ADF).

Does what it should--and what I want--for the priceI know that a lot of people out there (including all of the salesman at computer stores) and magazines like "Consumer Reports" do not recommend getting an all-in-one machine, but I have very limited space and really like having the fax utility without having a separate fax machine. There are times that I like having a fax much more than even having a computer. I'm able to fax prescriptions to my pharmacy for pick-up later, and--now that I have one set rate for all my phone calls (local and long distance)--I can fax government forms at 4 a.m. to Albany, New York at my leisure.
Set-up with Windows ME was simple as could be and also it works quite well with my DSL connection.
The only drawback--for some--is that the scanner is not a flatbed scanner, so if you're looking for a machine that can scan pages from books or magazines without having to tear out the page, this is not the machine for you. But I have found friends' flatbed scanners to be a royal pain in the you-know-what, so I don't think this will be a drawback for me. Machines that have flatbed scanners are just too big for the space I have allotted my machine. I have already tried it with my OCR software--which is my main reason for scanning--and it works just fine.
Lastly, being able to buy this machine at 3 a.m. through Amazon when my old one finally gave up the ghost was the ultimate in convenience. Since Amazon discounts the machine and I didn't have to pay sales tax or pay for a taxi to drag the thing home (I'm a real New Yorker without a car), I didn't mind paying for delivery and I even opted for two-day delivery, which normally I'm too penny-pinching to do, and it came on the day it was promised. Ordered in the wee-hours of Sunday, delivered on Wednesday (Monday was a holiday); can't get better than that.
I love this device...First the printing quality is excellent for black and white, but also quite good with color. I think that the black and white speed is very good. I am a computer programmer, and author so I frequently print code and chapters when working or writing. Printing large chapters in Draft quality is twice as fast as my previous printer, the HP 722C, which I also thought was fast. I have attempted to print photos, with mixed results.
Although I am not 100 percent sold on the scanning feature, I have used it before and it works pretty good. I still rely on my HP ScanJet for professional quality scans.
Copying is pretty good on this device. You can modify the copy quality right on the device's control panel as you are making copies. I think that the Fine quality images/documents turn out looking really good, while the Normal quality leaves a little to be desired.
The fax machine built into this device is really what sold me. I frequently need to fax dozens of pages at a time to various locations, and the feeder tray has never failed me; with this fax machine I have never had to resend a page yet - knock on wood. You are also supposed to be able to store numbers in the fax machine's memory, but I have yet to figure that out.
In all, this is one of the best multipurpose devices I have ever purchased. I am very happy with it, and I highly recommend it.
All-in-one Perfect for HomeSo far we've been completely impressed by the quality of the machine and the ease-of-use. With its USB interface, hooking it up to our Win XP system was a piece of cake (and, yes, although other reviewers have mentioned problems with XP, it appears HP has resolved those issues and now provides full XP compatibility with the out-of-the-box drivers).
I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who needs all of the all-in-one's capabilities for the home or home office.

Close but No CigarThe printer cartridges can be used up quickly and they are costly to replace. Look up 15M0120 for color and 12A1970 for black to see their current pricing. They were quite high when this review was written.
Also, the pages can get jammed or come out crooked easily due to the way the printer is designed. The right side of the paper is designed to load faster than the left. The printer uses an auto-fix way of adjusting that. Although, sometimes that does not work and your pages either get jammed or come out crooked, as stated above.
This printer is good at printing fast DRAFT quality prints, but draft quality is, what the name suggests, .... The normal printing quality is far better but it also takes far longer to print.
Overall, I would look around for a better printer, possibly an HP.
Good printer for the average documents...I gave this 3 stars only because with the high resolution photo quality printers out there now, this Lexmark just doesn't compare if that is the quality that you are looking for. It is also pretty slow to print color documents. For everyday printing, this printer is great! However, now that I need a printer that will print photo quality and faster prints, this printer has become obsolete to me. I will probably keep it around for my normal document prints.
If you are looking for high resolution and photo quality, try an Epson. Otherwise for students and families using a printer for your average document prints, this would do the trick!
A solid, reliable printer.I'm amazed at the people who claim that they go through an ink cartridge in one day! While Lexmark ink is a little pricey,(Hence the 4 star rating) the cartridges will last as long as any other on the market. If you manage to use one in a day you might want to consider a commercial grade printer not one designed for home or home office use.
Text is crisp and clear and images are excellent. I'm sure you can find a printer that will produce better results but probably not in this price range.
The HP OfficeJet 7130 printer has way more options than one would need! I love the improved photo quality and quietness of the printer, but I did run into the issues below...
As for things folks should watch out for:
1 - The Automatic Paper Feeder (APF) wasn't assembled correctly on my unit and I've been waiting 3 months for HP to send replacement parts (4 calls to TS so far). So for now I can only manually scan ;(
2 - The memory slot reader is nice, but it seems to have problems with large SD/MMC cards (64mb & 128mb). The transfer speed slows to a crawl so I end up using a USB card reader instead.
3 - Printer cartridges ink level can be checked online, but it will keep printing a large spool file even if it should stop. I ran out of color ink and wanted to switch to printing in greyscale mode (black ink only) and it wouldn't let me. You have to have enough of both inks to start new jobs.
4 - Don't stockpile ink cartridges. HP has some kind of expiration date that the printer won't honor after their expiration date. The cartridges that came with the printer are good for slighlty more than 1 year. You can check your expiration dates on the status page. I think they do this to prevent folks from refilling or buying re-manufactured cartridges.
5 - Adobe Acrobat 6's "Scan to PDF" feature doesn't seem to work with this printer. My guess is that since both products are new they weren't tested together. I hope Adobe & HP can work together to get full Acrobat support for the 7130 in a future update from either company.
Haven't used the fax feature so I can't comment.
