Cheap to buy, expensive to own
Great Printer, But Ink Eater
Cheap printer, expensive non-fading ink. This printer uses a special type of ink, called "Durabrite", which is MUCH longer-lasting than normal inkjet ink. (It's a pigment-based ink rather than a dye-based ink.) Your printouts will not fade away like a normal cheap inkjet's will. The downside to this super-duper ink is that the ink is darned expensive. The good news is that the four colors are separate cartridges, so at least you only have to replace the one color you've run out of. The black ink, however, is the MOST expensive inkjet cartridge you'll see in the store. It's about twice the price of a normal black cartridge. Yes, your printouts will last some 70 years on plain paper, instead of vanishing within 2 years like the cheapo inkjets do. Three of those $25 black cartridges later, and you've just spent more on ink than the printer itself!
Strangely, the other color cartridges (cyan, magenta, and yellow) are only half the price of the black cartridge. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. Too bad the black is the one you'll be buying most often.
I should point out that this printer will try to con you into replacing the ink cartridges long before they actually run dry (it gives you all sorts of dire warnings about low ink levels). Don't fall for it. It will actually STOP printing when it's truly run dry, so just keep printing until it stops, and only then replace the cartridge that's empty.
So, should you get this printer? It depends on what you'll be using it for. If you want a cheap printer for making quick printouts that you'll be tossing in the trash within a couple years, get a different printer. If you want printouts that will still be legible 50 years from now, get this one. If you're an artist or photographer and want to make decent prints of your art that won't fade too quickly, this is a good starter printer for you.

It prints... but it could be better
Great little printer!I've had good results with the graphics and printed some photo-quality images using Kodak InkJet photo paper. You have to do some adjustments of the settings to get things right, but the results are very good once that is done.
The major complaint I have is the noise coming out of this thing! It isn't bad while printing, but during initialization and after printer a few sheets, it goes into a mode where it sounds like it is coming apart. All ink jet printers do this, but this one is especially noisy.
Worth every penny! The speed and print quality is perfect for at-home use with professional-looking quality. As with any injet/bubble printer, using the right kind of paper for the job does make a difference. With the plain paper, text looked laser-jet sharp. Color looked just fine, as well, but it doesn't have the crisp quality of using special photo paper. Also, the color bled through the back of the plain paper, however, the color didn't run which saves on using that expensive for draft or quick copies.
The individual tanks are a lot less expensive than having to purchase brand new ones...
Another thing I love about it is that, in addition to my iMac, I also have an old IBM machine. Just for the heck of it, I plugged my printer into it, and guess what? Yes, it works. One printer that can be used on both platforms. All it takes to use it on both computers is the right cable. A USB cable for the iMac and a parrallel cable for the IBM. NOTE: No computer cables were included with the printer. They do have to be purchased separately.
Another note of versatility - Canon has an add-on that can be purchased to make the printer into a scanner. My understanding of the way it works is that you take out the toner cartridges and replace it with a scanning cartridge. I saw a demo, and it looked pretty simple...Not bad, but it is sheet-fed...However, if you have a small work area and don't have room for another piece of equipment, it would be a smart buy if you are desperately in need of scanning capabilities.
The savings in the long run on toner and paper, and being able to use it on both my IBM & Macintosh machines made this an intelligent choice for me. Plus getting the rebate? It certainly is the best [money] I've ever spent.

really mediocre
Mediocre at BestIn terms of operation, this machine is very buggy. About 1/4 of the print jobs do not register. The error message tells you to fiddle with the USB then with the power supply cable. What you really need to do is restart your computer each time, then it'll spit out all the backed up print jobs in the queue. About 1/3 of the time, the first several sheets of your copy jobs come out as a giant black rectangle that covers the entire sheet of paper. Once it warms up, the remaining copies usually come out okay. Fortunately, it doesn't do that with the print jobs. To add insult to injury, this thing is an ink guzzler. The ink cartridges are not refillable and are expensive to replace.
Despite all the bugs, I'm giving this item 2 stars. It really saves your butt, say on the evening of April 15th when you need to make a couple copies of your tax forms before you head to the 24hr post office. Besides, what did you expect from a cheapy little printer?

Warning!
good printer with some software problems...Although our printer has a network card, we decided for the sake of installation simplicity to connect it to a Win-95 PC and share it on the network. This resulted in a problem that a Win-NT computer could not access the printer since HP drivers for NT were not fully compatible with drivers for Win-95/98 ...
I'd say its an entry-level laser printer for a workgroup. I would not recommend to buy it for home office in this pricy configuration with two paper trays and a network card.
Nice Printer - Good Value - A Few QuirksI have only two compaints about the printer. First, in this day and age the Ethernet should be 10/100-BaseT capable. We knew it didn't have the support when we bought it, but it doesn't seem worth the extra money to buy the more expensive print server that supports it. Again, I think this an expected network feature nowadays. The second complaint is the sound level of the printer. It is definately noisier than the HP-6P that we have. The noise concern is not so much the printing noise as a small fan (I assume) that turns on and off while it sits idle. When there is any background noise going on you don't notice it, but when I'm working alone it can be distracting at times when it either turns on or off and changes noise levels.
In any case, overall, we like the printer and our happy with the purchase.

not a great product
Hardware Fab! Software Bad!A very nice feature to the C5500 is AnsMode, where if you plug your answering machine through the unit, you can send faxes to the answering machine, but the unit will pick up and recieve the fax as normal.
But the reason i didn't give it 5 stars is the software. The unit is completely useless without the software. While you can copy and recieve/send faxes to a degree without the software, you cannot print as another printer similar to other printers. The software is often very problematic and sometimes doesnt start up properly, making you restart or plug a different printer into the unit. The software also crashes a lot both on Win98 and WinME machines. If you misplace the CD (I could've sworn I left it on the counter) it's a 40MB download just to make it work!!!
Unfortunately, the software gives the C5500 a bad reputation with me. If the software were re-designed it would earn the C5500 a 5 star rating because the unit is really and truly wonderful.
Not conpatable with XP operating system.

Overpriced--That's the fax, ma'am....
UX-3CR is for Sharp model numbers:Also, just in case it's not clear to you, there are two rolls, 98 feet each, in the package.
I agree with other customers here -- this is a pricey way to print faxes. I try to receive and print most on my PC, but my UX-355L is great for sending.
Sharp fax machine UX-340Lis also compatible for the the Sharp UX-340L. I went through
alot of hassle with the Sharp company to find that out so I thought I would save someone else the trouble. Good luck with
your fax, I hope this helps someone.

Not Good
Pass on this one
HP DeskJet 3550The problem is that it can not handle more than one sheet of paper in the tray at any one time. I connected the printer to my computer, that part was easy. The printer wanted to print a test page, so I let it. It then took two pieces of paper instead of one, printed half a page and jammed. I tired it again with less paper in the tray, it jammed again. It does not just paper jam, it also eats the paper as it locks up. This means that you have to open it up and fish the little ripped corners of the paper out of the machine before it will print again. The way to deal with this is to have only one piece of paper in the tray at a time, making multi-page print jobs a nightmare.
The quality of the printing, when it does work, is very good for such a low priced printer. I like that it comes with both color and black ink. Some low price printers only have the color ink included. The power cord for the printer is not made for power-strips, it is huge! It takes up 3 outlets, unless you plug it in at the end of the strip. The printer does not come with the USB cord, you will need this to print. The cord will cost more than half the price of the printer.
Good:
Print quality
Size of unit
Price
Ease of install
Ink included
Bad:
Paper jams
Power cord size
No USB cord
