R&D Nightmare
First off, I am a huge HP fan!!! The R&D department should be fired for making this printer. This is the worst printer I have ever used & by far the loudest. I have had 2 of these printers now & they always jam up no matter what type of paper you use. I am taking this one back too & getting a high end HP color laser. All I can say about this product is stay far away & don't even consider thinking about buying one. BTW I am still a huge HP fan.

Taking it back
HP misses the mark on this one. Took hours to set up. Could not connect with USB on Windows XP. "24 hour" HP tech support closes at 5. Clearing paper jams requires removing major components. The unit churns, clangs, and roars like a beast. Print quality is okay, however.

Nice try
I like that this is a real toner laser printer as opposed to one of those wax-type printers and that it is pretty fast. Drivers are OK but could use some help (I'm using win2000). Of course the price is great for a color laser!

Didn't like that it is kinda loud - can't print after family goes to bed! Also, it is not picture quality. The colors are sometimes WAY off, the drivers have no adjustment for this and the quality is like a magazine print - nasty dot effect. Finally, the toner rubs off on light colors! Really wierd.

In conclusion, I should have bought a simple B&W laser and a color Inkjet Photo printer to serve my needs. My wife says I'm not allowed to make this sort of purchase anymore and is confiscating the credit cards after this one! :-)

TERRIBLE PRINTER
I've had this printer for a while now, and i rarely can get it to work properly. When it is not taking 2 pieces of paper at a time, it is printing in some strange code. The quality of the picture is alright, but nothing special. I would highly recommend not to buy this printer

Don't do it!
I've had HP printers for years and have always liked them. However, this printer is a real headache. We've had 3 --taking the time for returns was a hassle. With each of these HP printers, the paper feed mechanism has been defective. With every document I printed, the feeder malfunctioned and the paper was torn or badly misaligned. I found out on the HP website that others have had similar problems with a number of HP printers--malfunctioning paper feeds. HP has done nothing to correct this problem. I've now become a Canon printer owner am quite happy with Canon printers--excellent quality and no problems. I'll never buy another HP printer.

Flawless.
This printer worked like a champion. I retired it for a 2230 and later for a cp1700. I made countless prints off it. Never had it fail me, misfeed or so much as tell me no. I bought the duplexer and loved that thing too! I wish I had one for this CP1700. The ink prices and refilling the carts are the only complant I have. But it is what it is. All desktop printers are designed to make there bosses money. When you buy a printer you are buying a subscription to ink. Though compared to everything else on the market in it's class the 960 is the champion. If I had to estimate the page count I put on that little machine I'd have to say about 12,000 pages in color over a 1 year period, at least 1,000 pages per month. Most everything I print is full page color. It sucks that HP doesn't make them like the 900 series anymore.

Not really a printer; it's a paper jammer
From day 1 this printer seemed to LOVE jamming & shredding paper. It almost NEVER printed more than 3 consecutive sheets without a problem. There seem to be at least two distinctly different types of jams (one actually mangles paper; the other just stops with the jam light on after printing a page), and the printer chooses between them at random. It's now sitting in my garage, awaiting the next "heavy trash" pickup day.

Good Copier, Good Price, Bad Paper Jams
Intially thought this was a great copier/printer and a great price. However, after 6 months of use the original unit I bought had a paper jam that could not be fixed in any manner other than sending it back to Sharp. I have received my replacement unit which after 1 day has had the same problem. To Sharp's credit they will send me a third unit but it is on backorder and they have no idea when they will have a replacement unit. I don't know if this is a chronic problem with this model or if I'm just unlucky enough to get two units with the same problem.

Beware - no Windows XP printer driver
I bought a Sharp AL-1551 copier/laser printer well over a year ago. To date, Sharp still does provide a Windows XP driver for this unit. The Windows 98 driver provided requires manual intervention with every system start-up and the driver is very slow and bogs down my system every time I print.

Several calls and emails to Sharp have either provided a canned non-response or else have pointed to conflicting "alternate" drivers -- none of which are satisfactory. These alternates do not work and their installation is totally non-straightforward.

I think this proves that Sharp does not care about customer satisfaction and is out of their league in the printer market and it also demonstrates uncaring support for its users.

This is what I get for straying away from HP for printers.

Maybe others will read this and consider it before buying a Sharp printer.

Terrible Printer
When I first got this Compaq printer it worked well. That only lasted about a month. After that when I tried to print anything color it would print in visible stripes. Cleaning the print heads only helped for maybe a day and then it was back to the stripes again. In addition to it's bad quality printing the ink is overpriced. I would recommend a Canon printer instead. They are cheap and work great. I own two and have never had a problem with them. Plus, they print great photos.

DOESN'T DESERVE 1 STAR
This printer is a piece of junk. I have another lexmark/compaq and a HP. Both of my lexmark/compaq printers don't feed the paper in straight and the printer takes in more than one sheet of paper an prints a page of stuff on five sheets of paper. I would recomend hp's or epson's BUT DON'T BUY A LEXMARK.

can not use refilled cartriges.
Because of high priced new cartriges this is one you do not want. Because you can not use refilled cartriges.

pile of junk
I have owned this monster for almost 1 year so maybe wife will let me smash it with a hammer now. If you like to hear "problems communicating with printer" this is the machine for you. Also you will learn to uninstall and reinstall software flawlessly. Maybe I could give it to my mother in law?

No Worries
I too got this printer with a new Dell computer, but I have had NO PROBLEMS!!! The software install is flawless and the printer itself is so user friendly. I have NEVER HAD any paper jams or problems with ink or scanning. What more could you want from a print/scanner combination, this printer is a piece-of-cake.

User Friendly
I bought the Lexmark X85 some months back and have had no problems with the printer or my computer's connection to the printer. It is user friendly, I didn't even need to refer to the manual for any directions. I've never once had a paper jam. The only bad thing I can think of is the ink costs more than most, but even that is bypassable with all the refill packs going around. The picture quality and speed of printing is the best i've seen for an inkjet.

Print Problems
I have had my Lexmark 5700 for 2 1/2 years at first it printed OK. I have printed a low to moderate amount with it. As with the other reviews I have had major problems with the black ink. Mine now will not print black unless the heads have been cleaned each use and then only after at least 5 pieces of paper have been run through. Not worth the effort anymore.

fair but not durable
My Lexmark 5700 did a fair job printing until the day an envelope got stuck in it. This rather common event has left the printer unable to print with black ink. I won't be buying a Lexmark again, they are far too fragile.

Mediocre from the get-go
I got my Lexmark 5700 about 2 1/2 years ago. The black and white printing was great to start with, but the color printing never did turn out as good as prints from other printers, including my brother's Canon Bubblejet and my Dad's HP Deskjet.
Color printing is somewhat better with a photo cartridge installed. Like one of the other reviewers, I have also, for the last 6 or 8 months, had significant problems with my black ink cartridges. The print quality is horrid. I just put in a brand new black cartridge, and one day later, the print is awful. There are skips all through my words. I don't know if this is a problem with the printer or the cartridges. If it's the cartridges, it's a big problem considering each black cartridge is about 28 to 30 dollars. Either way, I would not recommend this printer to anyone. I'm about 2 seconds from starting a bonfire with mine. Then I'm going shopping for something other than a Lexmark.

Works OK, but no MacOS X support
I'm reasonably happy with how this printer performs in general, and it does the job as a quick and dirty copier.

However, I was extremely disappointed that Canon apparently doesn't have the slightest intention of writing MacOS X native printer drivers for it. As a workaround, I print my documents to a PDF file and then run Acrobat in the Classic environment to print from there. MacOS X PDF support is excellent, so this works quite well.

Nevertheless, given Canon's disgraceful lack of support, I doubt that I'll ever buy a Canon printer again.

Great idea, short on delivery.
The versatility and light-weight, compact design of this machine made it practically irresistible to an iMac man like me. But after experiencing some communication problems between the printer and my computer, and then noticing that the product is absent from the catalogs of most Macintosh dealers, I was able to determine that the Canon 545 uses a conversion cable for USB compatibility. The Canon 555, on the other hand, comes with "hard-wired", built-in USB capability. Only slightly larger and a few dollars more than the 545, the 555 may be the better bet for most Mac users, at least in this price range.

Mine's just fine!
I am a Mac G3 user and for the price and all the functions this machine performs, I think it is great. I have space restraints and this is the smallest of the multifuntion machines. Probably the only thing I don't love is the quality of the printing, although if you instruct your computer to print on best quality (which is slow) the quality is much better!

HORRIBLE PRINTER
I have had this printer for maybe 2 years and the first day I got it.... it was printing sort of fast but now.... it takes maybe 1 page per minute only with black and white! If you print in color it takes for 2 or 3 minutes! I suggest to you that this is a horrible printer and that you should not buy this printer unless you want to have a REALLY slow printer!

I rate this product is below than 0. Shouldn't buy this prod
I definitely agree with V Brown. This is beyond question the WORST printer I have ever owned. Hewlett Packard should know this already but nothing improved!!!. Why I could say this? Coz I have sent it twice for servicing in the service center but it came with the same problem.
I cannot print a simple job over two pages to completion. It
jams and cannot feed paper correctly. I have jumped through
every hoop conceivable and nothing resembling a decent output
over two pages even worst that I have to restart all over again the computer to ensure that I could print again. This is to alarm you all. Do not waste your money!!!

I'm even using recycled paper!
I don't agree with the previous two commenters. I used 640C for 3 years without the smallest trouble. I'm even using recycled paper. But the woman cleaning the house fell it to the ground. I will now by the same model again.

Very Disappointed
Like all the HP products I have owned, the printer worked well but that is where it ends. After almost a year of total frustration with the fax, I bought a Canon Multipass F50 (which is not a laser printer) and it has performed flawlessly. The 3200 owners manual, software and online service did not solve the constant fax problems. The only saving grace is that after two letters to HP, they replaced the unit with a newer model. Despite HP's repsonsiveness, it did not offset the unpleasant experience I had with their product and the fact that this product was released for production in the first place.

No HP anymore

The software could be thrown away immediately - it's so buggy and dumb. The fax is unreliable - for some reason it would stop receiving faxes after a while - the unit would need resetting. HP support first sent replacement DIMM. Didn't help. Then they sent me another unit - didn't help either. Then I saw similar complaints at HP's user forum site - and I realized it's just an inherent problem having no solution. It seems like faxes are being accumulated in memory (although there's paper, and they're printed as received) and then not replaced or purged. So now I just periodically reset it ahead of time to avoid embarassment of my fax machine not being available on a regular basis.

Their support site is terrible, updates are posted rarely and mostly useless, yet they bug you to respond and rate them. I'd rather they make good products so people wouldn't have to live in those forums.

Overall, spare yourself trouble and look for something other than HP.

awful
2 units and several new bios chips later I returned it. It is a very large useless product.

Networking does not work with XP
I was a HP printer fan until I purchased the 7140xi. I purchased it because it came with a print server & networking capabilities for my home LAN. After 40-50 hours on the phone with HP Support; calling friends for technical support, weeks of frustration, and many installs/uninstalls later--the HP printer is being returned. I could not get the HP software to install on my desktop with Windows XP-Home. I was able to install the HP Director software on 1 Windows 2000 laptop but not on another W2K laptop. My advice: consider another multifunction. I just ordered a Canon Multipass 730 & have given up on a networked multifunction for my home LAN.

Great hardware, but the PC software is terrible
The hardware functionality is excellent for our small office; however, the Windows PC-Hosted software is awful! The "scan to destination" feature is only compatible with Acrobat 5, and will it only work from the profile under which it was installed. So, if you log in as "bob" and install Acrobat and the HP software, you will only be able to create pdfs while logged in as "bob". Acrobat disappears as an option under all other profiles. Judging by HP's forums, this is a well known problem; however, they haven't released new software since 9-17-2003. The media slot can only be accessed through HP's proprietary software; thererfore, it doesn't appear as a drive, and can't be shared over the network without installing the nasty HP software on every machine.

If you just want a great fax/copier get this. If you'd actually like to use the other features in a networked environment, forget about it.

Fax does not work
After having problems receiving faxes from certain fax machines, I just returned my HP to buy a Cannon Multipass.
