The most amazing NASCAR Scanner made
This scanner is absolutely amazing. You can download a list of frequencies online for all the NASCAR drivers, then simply upload them to your scanner... it takes 10 seconds and saves you hours upon hours programming by hand. This scanner also has text so you can glance down at the scanner to see exactly who is talking at the races. It's awesome!!!

Great to take to the track
I've had a Uniden SC200 scanner for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. I'm a big auto racing fan and take it to the track whenever I attend a race. During practice I can listen in to the drivers talking to their pits and the alphanumeric display lets me easily see who is talking. I pick up the frequencies for free from various Web sites (e.g. Race By Race let's me use WinScan Sport to download them straight to the scanner). During the race, I tune into the TV production frequencies to hear the commentary and set up priority channels to break away whenever my favorite drivers' say something (Paul Tracy is always fun). I usually monitor race control too. It adds a whole new dimension to being there at the track.

Good scanner, but spend the extra $20.00 and get the SC200
This is an awesome scanner that is absolutely amazing for nascar events. But my question is why would anyone buy this scanner when you could get the Uniden SC200 scanner which has the exact same interface and looks the same as this scanner. Unlike the SC180, the SC200 is PC programmable, which means you don't have to spend hours programming frequencies and TEXT-NAMES into the unit. The SC200 also has and extra 100 channels for a total of 200 and it has CTCSS/CDCSS tone squelch control which ALL the NASCAR drivers use. Drop an extra $20 and get a scanner you will REALLY love.

Excellent Scanner!! Sportcat 180 is great!!!
I love this scanner. I use it when I attend Nascar races. It has several nice options which I like. This scanner has 100 channels that you can preset frequencies on. It has alpha numeric capabilities that allow you to save names on the channels. You can set Priority frequencies for every bank of 10 channels or so. It has automatic weather with one push of a button. This model is rechargeable, and comes with an AC adapter to keep the batteries well charged throughout a race. This scanner also has a backlight so you can see the channels in the dark for those night races. This is the same scanner that Racing Electronics sells at the race track on Winston Cup Weekends. They also have several nice options available for this scanner such as a splitter for 2 headsets, various headphones/headsets, short nubby antenna's etc.

Bottomline, this scanner is awesome. If you are a Nascar fan, you don't know what you are missing if you haven't brought a scanner to the track. The Sportcat 180 gives you everything you could possibly need, and will greatly enhance your racing experience. Buy this scanner now before you head to the track!!!

I have used this scanner for over a year at work and had no problems. It allows to scan page by page anything up to 8.5" wide. It also allows to add comments to both text and pictures. Cut/copy and paste function allows to reproduce portions of the document, including both comments and the scanned 'picture'. And not only in the document itself. You can paste into Word, Excel or PaintBrush, if you wish, as a picture (it comes out big, but can be easily resized).
The text recognition feature that comes with the software allows to convert the document into either Word or Excel, if you had a table, for example.
You can also use the software to fill in blanks in a form, just drag your document into the 'typewriter' (or 'ABC') icon on the bottom of the screen.
Very compact, about 10"x3"x4", it's an excellent tool if you travel with equipment. The "lid" has 2 positions, allowing for the sheet to either go towards the user (feeder side) or slide out of the back of the devise.

    Use some common sense...
GOOD review follows! First, this is NOT the best choice for PERFECT scans of photos or fragile documents. It does a perfectly adequate job with snapshots and newspaper clippings, an EXCEPTIONAL job with color or B/W letter-size material. It scans for fliing/fax, OCR or color images, up to 600 DPI.

If you are careful, you can easily feed sheets into this device without trouble. Be patient. It has an included software application that allows scanning multiple succesive sheets to one document, for convienence...but you can separate the pages later! Cool. Or you can group different scans to one document later. Cooler!

The image editing software is pretty darn good. Why? Because it has a decent selection of tools while not being overly complicated to use. You can use it as a desktop-type filing system too.

Some versions of the "Paperport" software export scans to PDF! If you understand what that means, you'll jump for joy...

But you know where the Strobe REALLY excels? You can quickly scan a document, drag it to Word and have about 95% immediately recognized as an editable Word file. Very little re-typing. How many times do you need some information IN your computer at school or work that exists only in a printed form? Wow! And you did this in about 30 seconds...

The Strobe is not perfect, but it does many jobs well enough to overlook that it is not the best solution of any ONE job. But it's the 90% solution for a TON of jobs! Buy it. You will not regret it.

Great Scanner, Plus Quality Scans and Software
After a lot of research on the web and in magazines, I decided to purchase the Acer 1240UT Scanner. My research paid off - big time. This scanner was extremely easy to set up right out of the box. The provided instructions were clear and to the point. I just removed all of the plastic wrapping, plugged in the enclosed USB and AC adaptor wires and I was ready to go. My CD-Rom was broken at the time, so I simply went to the Acer website and quickly downloaded the superb MiraScan driver. Windows 98 recognized the scanner and software immediately and I made my first scan in less than 20 minutes out of the box. The included graphics and OCR software packages are quite nice, but I didn't buy the scanner for the programs! (I prefer to use the high-end professional graphics software - which work perfectly well with this scanner.) Indeed, I bought the scanner for the high quality scans and built in transparency adaptor. And boy does this baby deliver! At 1200 X 1200 dpi, 42-bit color (supposedly, 281 trillion colors is more than the human eye can perceive) this scanner has met all of my needs for web publishing, archiving photographs, printing pictures, scanning negatives and emailing. The Mirascan driver meshes well with all of my graphics programs and is very versatile in terms of image enhancements, preview mode, scanning up to 10 images simultaneously, and getting exactly the quality and type of scan you desire. The built in transparency adaptor is very handy - you can easily convert all of your slides and negatives to a digital format. Several plastic templates are included, and these help a lot in aligning your transparencies. On the downside, the scanner can be slow at higher resolutions. However, the scan quality achieved is well worth the wait. In addition, the scanner is a bit bulky and heavier than most of the newer scanners. Overall, I was impressed with Acer's quality engineering and innovative design in this scanner. It more than meets any scanning need from newbie all the way up to pro.

    simple, compact, works great
I bought this at an airport kiosk after my kids and I got tired of straining to hear our DVDs and other portable electronic devices over the engine roar. Just 2 AAs needed (which last a long time), 3 people can plug into it at once. Fits in your pocket easily. Very nice little gadget.

    Fast, quiet, and efficient
This unit replaced my HP 5P laser printer and an older, much larger Sharp copier which had seen it's better days. Both of these laser functions greatly surpass my older pieces of equipment.

The scanner also works great although it did take a little practice to figure it out since I had never used one before.

I opted not to get the model with the fax since that feature doesn't seem necessary...one can scan in a document or photo and e-mail it.

After agonizing over different models and visiting the various office stores in town I'm glad I settled on this machine. It seems like a much better unit than most of the multi-function machines that include a fax and thus skimp on the copy, print, and scan functions.
