The design is both a curse and a blessing
The sound quality from the MDR-G57 is excellent, with crystal clear output at the highest volume and minimal distortion. These headphones were obviously designed with portable CD players in mind. While the sound quality is nice, the design is, to say the least, unique. Rather than forcing the user to ruin their carefully sculpted hair style by putting headphones over it, these phones go behind the neck, saving face and hair.

The design does present a few problems, though. The first is the lack of size adjustment. Luckily, my head is neither too big or too small, but it can definitely be a problem to people with smaller or larger heads. Sounds silly, I know, but being too tight or too big can seriously cause discomfort. My friend bought these headphones and had the problem with her ears getting sore because she couldn't adjust the earpieces. One warning to all, though, prolonged use does cause irritation on the tops of the ears. Also, to people with glasses, you might want to reconsider buying these particular headphones, because the phones themselves take over the whole ear, preventing you from properly putting on your glasses.

The other drawback in the design is the bleedthrough, more so on these than other open-ear design headphones. Be careful of the volume if travelling on a bus or a plane, because the people sitting around you will definitely hear what you are listening to.

But all that said, I am happy with these headphones, though I see the drawbacks for many people, and experienced a few of them myself. For the price, these are a great deal. For sound quality, these have it where it counts, for design, it's depends on the person.

Suprisingly comfortable design and good sound
I have found that I do not like earbuds, the little "clip on" individual ear headphones, and pretty much anything other than traditional "over the head" stereophones, so I was pleasantly suprised when the Sony MDR-G series actually fit me well. I have the MDR-G57 and MDR-G52 and enjoy both. The G52s were very tough and lasted over three years before the bass started to rattle and the earpeice started to come undone.

Overall, these are very good heaphones but seem a bit overpriced. Many people with long hair or earings may find them uncomfortable or hard to put on and take off because the headband goes *behind* your head not over your head. However, big heads and big ears are not a problem as I have both.

Some major pros to the design is that it is very comfortable for me (even for long term use for homework and stuff), very durable (mine have lived in my backpack for the years they survived), and generally nice looking (especially the G52 -- I could do without the yellow on the G57s).

However, no matter how you slice it you are definitely paying a premium for the Sony name. They are durable and sound very good, but for the money you could buy better sounding headphones from Koss or Aiwa and enjoy your music more. Definitely look at other brands, and if you like these Sony's the most go for it. You won't be disappointed.

OMG here they are!!!
I love this style of Sony headphones! I have been looking all over for them b/c they are too expensive at Sony.com. They are so comfortable, I can even sleep with them on. I hightly reccomend these!

Incredible Sound
I first bought the Sony MDR V6 over a decade ago and was so taken by their performance, that I invested in the V600 a few months ago. I have not been disappointed. If you are looking to combine your digital music listening experience (CDs, MP3s, etc) with a top notch pair of headphones or looking to enhance your movie watching experience (on a laptop for example) with a state of the art pair of headphones, look no further.

The highs and the lows are captured perfectly, adding a hithero unknown dimension to your listening (and viewing) pleasure. You certainly cannot go wrong with the price either!

Be warned, however, that these headphones are heavy. While, not a problem, should you be sitting in one place and listening to the audio, by no means will you be comfortable walking around in these headphones. (Hence the four and not five stars.)

Decent but Not Flawless
These headphones produce good sound and are comfortable for long stints (12-hour paper-wrting marathons, anyone?). However, two things bother me about them. First of all, they produce a lot of static when not playing anything -- since this static does not come out of my Klipsch ProMedia 5.1s, I have to attribute it to the headphone electronics. And secondly, although I have only had them for a bit more than a year, the right earpad is already coming apart, which gives me doubts about long-term durability. A lesser problem is that they are hard to transport because of their size, but they keep out plane noise so well that I can't really complain that much. Overall, I give them an A- for sound quality, an A+ for comfort, and a C for durability.

Useful Reference Work
Headphones are highly personal devices, so don't be surprised to see wide variances of opinion. In fact, I have yet to discover an "all-purpose" pair. Imagine an equalizer board with 8-16 slider switches adjustable in any number of configurations. Boost the treble and upper mid-range while cutting back on the bass and you have the Panasonic 850's, which are perfect for concentrating on Ella's voice or Tony Williams' ride cymbal but not on Nelson Riddle's orchestral arrangements or Ray Brown's bass.

The Sony MDR-V600's may be as close to a "universal," accurate set of headphones as you can get for under a hundred and fifty. Compared to my MDR-6's, which my son "borrowed," they're more comfortable and the sound is more "flat" (i.e. accurate, faithful, undoctored). If your tastes extend beyond contemporary pop and you're serious about sound "fidelity," beware of those "DJ" models, with the bass boost, brain-shaker and virtual-reality features. And as a previous reviewer has pointed out, this model is identical with the higher-priced "professional" phones Sony is listing as model 7506. Perhaps Sony plans to make the 700's the only available models (call it "cost-effective marketing), because there are currently some great deals on the MDR-V600's.

My only "complaint" is the extreme degree to which the V600's seal off all outside sound, making me feel like I'm trapped in a cocoon (they're ideal for anti-social or solipsist personalities). These phones are a pleasure now and then, but I'm still happy with my Sennheiser PX-100's for 80% of my listening.

Collapsible, but not Compact - Still a Good Buy
These headphones are a great buy for a few bucks! Perfect for the office, or on the run. While the ear pieces are a bit bulkier than more streamlined headphones, I personally don't mind them. I don't care for 'ear bud' type of headphones and too little padding is uncomfortable, so the bulkier, more heavily padded Koss Stereophones are great for me. Despite their larger size, they are lightweight and extremely comfortable.

Cord length is a major plus, especially if you're plugged into your computer. Not once have I rolled away from my desk and had my headphones ripped off my ears with these. 4 feet of cord is ample and the volume control built into the cord is a nice feature.

I found the sound quality to be very good with no noticeable distortion.

4 stars instead of 5, as the Koss Stereophones are "collapsible", though they are not very "compact". Also, they're fairly stiff when trying to collapse and a bit awkward that it feels as if the inexpensive plastic may break - so far so good though.

You could spend quite a bit more money for a much better pair of headphones, but if price is a concern, or if the highest quality product isn't an issue and you're looking for a standard pair of everyday headphones, you can't go wrong with these...

Excellent sound quality!
I'm not an audiophile, but this pair of headphones deliver clear, crisp trebles and mids and strong, well-defined bass. The volume control is very convenient, especially when I do not have convenient access to the volume control say in the school computer labs. The head band is a tad too tight though (though it grips nicely), and after one year of use, the plastic around the band broke. Nevertheless I will still buy another from Koss again. They make great sound!

The best of their class, by far.
The Koss KTX-Pro, which is the same exact pair of headphones which goes under the name Pro-35 at RadioShack, are better than anything else on the market in their price range, in terms of sound quality. The only thing I've ever griped about, was that after extended use at high volume levels, my ears DID start to hurt just a little, and required a break. I think it somehow had to do with the shape and density of the metal adjustable outer band. Perhaps it was just a bit gripping, but still worth enduring, none the less. But that problem has now been solved. I simply bended them into shape, until they started to fit more comfortably. It's kind of like a new deck of playing cards - at first, they're a little TOO crisp and new, until after you've spent enough time "breaking them in," so they'll feel smoother when you shuffle. Or, if you know anything about string instruments, such as the guitar or violin, then you know the same thing also applies to every fresh new pair of strings.

And with the warranty I purchased with these headphones, I can break them and go right down the street to RadioShack, and replace them with a fresh new pair, as often as I want for free, until nearly 2006! And I love the fact that while my portable MD is snuggly in my inside coat pocket, with my coat zipped up, I can still run the cord down the front outside of the coat, then up into my pocket (thanks to the cord being long enough for this procedure), thus giving me easy access to the in-line volume slider. Even the volume slider itself is noteworthy, in the way the max volume level is at the bottom, while volume-down is at the top position of the slider. At first, one might think this is upside-down, but somehow it just feels convenient and natural after a while.

ummm, not sure about everyone else
this is my take:

1) yeah the look cool, but all the behind-the-head headphones make it nearly impossible to rest your head on the seat of a bus or anything where you might need to just relax
2) i went through 2 pairs (my first cd player broke down so i got another one that incidently came with the same headphones) and each one ended up breaking on the sides
3) they don't want to sit in properly, each pair had a tendency to get kind of warped and sit funny, and after contorting it back into position a thousand times it just broke

overall: very good sound quality, cool looks, poor design (make sure you have normal head, but then again, i thought i had one too) also, the cord is fairly short

Good Product Overall
I purchased this item a week ago and so far, I am impressed with it. AIWA's sound quality is always excellent and impressive. But there are some cons that you might consider before buying the product. First of all, the headphone has poor quality earbuds. When I wore it for the first time, it was very uncomfortable and hurt my ears. But after listening to it for about 3 days, I got used to it. There are many pros also. The swoops AIWA headphones are very stylish. Plus, their sound quality is noticeably preferable than any other headphones. Fortunately, amazon offers the same headphone with the remote control which gives more preference. Overall, this is a desirable item. But if you are aspiring for a heaphone with comfort and decent sound, I would recommend SONY's behind-the-neck or clip-ons(which I own and they are very comfortable). But if you are aiming for finest and superb sound quality, give AIWA swoops a try.

aiwa headphones
I love the headphones, i bought them for a present for christmas and i am amazed at the comfort and quality of sound from such a small set of earphones! You easily forget you have them on! I can't believe i only paid so little for such quality! Very happy!

Best Headphones for...
These headphones deliver some serious quality. The bass and treble are great, with exceptional sound. They work well from heavy metal to Stravinsky. They are well designed and are so light you barely know that you're wearing them. The hinges are durable, and the blue pegs are for winding the cord around. They are very convenient and portable, they fold right up into themselves. I definatly recommend these to anyone that wants an awesome pair of headphones, but doesn't want to shell out major mula.

Great Headphones, Superb Value
These foldable Philips headphones don't just look really cool, they sound great and are comfortable too. These are the best headphones available in their price class... The sound is superb, with nice low bass tones and clean treble. The headphones don't block all outside noise by themselves, but can be turned up more than loud enough to eleminate any outside distraction. They are also really really comfortable, which may be one of its strongest features. Sometimes it doesn't feel like you're even wearing anything, and you'll forget they're on your head. They even fold up, and are built with metal hinges for extra durability. The only possible down-side is the short cord, it is only approximately 4 feet. So if you need a longer cord for whatever reason than these may not be right for you. But besides that- these are really nicely designed, excellent sounding, affordable headphones - being offered at an even lower price by Amazon. I was very pleased with these, and would recommend them to anyone looking for headphones.

Incredibly comfortable & portable!
These headphones are the best ones out there. I've bought $120, $70, $15 headphones in the past.. and the Philips HP550 Foldable Full-Size Headphones are definitely the best for your money!

I work on the computer for hours at a time, and these headphones are awesome to use for listening to MP3's.. but they are also great for plugging into your stereo or CD player. The sound is amazing regardless!

These headphones are also great for travel.. if you want to bring them on the plane, or to work-out or in the car. They just fold up into a small shape. Headphones are also incredibly durable.. I've had mine for over a year, and even after the dog chewed on the headset a little, they are still at optimum performance. An excellent product at a great price!

not high quality
I read about these "terrific" headphones only to find out they were low quality. After a few months, one speaker stopped working. In order to get it to work, I had to wiggle the wire. It got very frustrating. I wish I could send them back to Amazon but I accidently ripped the headphone wire trying to get the right speaker to work. Get something better.

Comfortable, mid-price, closed headphone
I'm very satisfied with these headphones. I was looking for a closed type of headphone, yet didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars. The models above this seemed to all be open ear models, so I selected this model.

I've had them up pretty loud, and the only problem I've noticed is that they will start to overload if the bass is pushed too hard a a high volume.

For my ears, they seem to require a bit of a push on the high end as well, but that's not a problem to adjust with EQ.

They're comfortable to wear for hours, though the closed design does tend to make your ears a bit warm and it can get uncomfortable after long periods of wearing.

The cord is thin, and detachable, which is a great feature.

If you're looking for low cost headphones for just about any but the most demanding use, these will fit the bill.

Very good value.
For ..., I think these are an excellent value- a good way for non-audiophiles to upgrade to better phones.

The sound is crisp and clear, and compares very well to more expensive phones I've heard in stores. Bass response is good, so much so that I don't use the Megabass as much on my portable.

Speaking of portables, these will work adequately with a portable player (max volume just a tad bit low), unlike many premium headphones. Of course, you will get best results playing these with a regular stereo.

They are very comfortable and lightweight, so you don't notice them too much. The light weight also helps a little in the portability factor.

One note- Headphones sound a lot better after you break them in for at least a few hours. This one is no different-

Good for ambient noise isolation and good sound.
These fit pretty well in my ears and are comfortable even after wearing them for 45 minutes.

The cord is a bit long, but you can always tie or wrap it up. I have some portable headphones that have only a 36" cord and that's too short, so having this one a bit long is better in my opinion.

They do a pretty good job of isolated the ambient or outside noise when you have them on and they do make you slightly more aware of your own body sounds like breathing, but it's not that big a deal to me at all. I like the fact that I don't hear car traffic or the sounds of others in the gym or treadmill sounds.

The sound quality is pretty good. It has good bass as well as treble. The sound is better than any other portable headphones I have. They don't have the quality of studio like headphones costing $100+, but I don't want to wear studio like headphones when I go out jogging or to the gym. These are quite light and have a very low profile which is nice for when I go out jogging or to the gym.

Comfortable, great for bass heavy music
I recently bought both these and the Shure e3c in-hear headphones (which cost about six times as much). The Sonys are for the gym (where they will surely take a beating and eventually need to be replaced) while the more expensive Shures will be used for my daily commute on public transportation (a generally less violent activity).

I really enjoy both headphones, but they are sonically worlds apart. The Sony headphones are a bit easier to insert and sit more comfortably in the ear than the Shures, whose cables have to be looped up and over each ear, newscaster-style. When it comes to ease of use and physical comfort, the Sonys are simply better. Sonically, it is hard to say one set of earphones is objectively better than the other. The Sonys feature a very prominent bottom end while the Shures have tighter bass response and much more mid-range clarity. I would say the Sonys have been engineered to sound "hot" (lots of bass and treble) while the Shures were designed to sound more neutral. In places where a sense of energy is more important than nuance (e.g., at the gym or out jogging) I'd recommend the Sony earphones. For longer periods of more introspective, careful listening, the Shures can't be beat.

Good, not great
These earphones do what they're supposed to do: mostly isolate outside noises and deliver good quality sound at a low cost. The base is very good for ear bud/phone style speakers which explains the popularity of the Sony EX51 & EX71s.

That said, I'm not that pleased with their fit. I've spent the better part of a week fiddling back & forth between the different cushions and finally decided that for my ears I have to use the small size. The catch is that the smalls don't fit *that* well but the next size up is too large to get a good insertion.

All in all I'm satisfied of their value but would recommend seeing if you can find a friend with either these or the EX71s to see what you think of having them in your ears before purchasing. After using these for a week I can see them being used on the bus/plane, but for everyday listening I'm going to keep on using the Apple iPod earphones or just use a much better sounding set of actual headphones for about the same money.

meant for house- not meant for pocket- good for music.
Real clean highs, and good clean lows. Deep deep bass doesn't penetrate that loudly with these phones, they still are better than everything else in their price and size range.

Most suited for portable digital music devices. Some of the other "studio" headphones suck up all your portable player's amperage, this one needs less juice to give you louder sound.

I use them with a mp3/fm player, and have found that the mdr's long cord makes for great FM reception, (even when most of its length is folded up somwehere).

These headphones have a weak spot on the headband where two peices of plastic meet. I broke it on one side, duck-taped it fixed, and then broke it on the other side as well, (just for stuffing it in to a jacket pocket). So don't test the plastic. It can't take pressure.

Before you get these ones, look at the Sony MDR-501LP headphones listed in 'similar products'. They look like great sounding headphones...

Great sound for the price
Looking for something to replace my pair of Panasonic RPHT355 headphones that had recently succumbed to wire fraying after several years of faithful service, and being unable to procure another pair of the same model cans, I decided to do a little early Christmas shoppin'. I eventually settled on a pair of Sony MDR-V300s. They looked reasonably fashionable (not that I care), and sported ear cups large enough to keep me comfortable through several hours of CD listening and/or DVD viewing in my "veg-out" room.

While it might not have the range my old set did (approx. 10 foot long cord versus the Panasonic model's 15 feet), and it's not quite as adjustable nor as comfortable to wear, I've yet to hear as high a degree of sound clarity and separation from other models in the same price range. Needless to say, the audio quality these bad-boys put out is perfect for listening to your fave CDs, DVDs (I couldn't believe how amazing the Dolby surround on my movie platters sounded through these!), and/or digital cable channels. All in all I found these more than worth the shekels I forked over for 'em.

On the downside, you can also hear the background hiss in your older cassette and VHS tapes a lot better with these. And it remains to be seen whether or not they possess good durability...

wonderful!
These headphones are great for the price! It has a good punchy sound, with great bass! but unlike other reviews say, i think these headphone's base isn't overpowering, just strong. Also the screw on adapter for the plug-in is nice, but the ridges for the screw can get in the way of some uses. It's bothersome when it's used along with my slimx 550 cd/mp3 player.

Nice Features/Easy to use
Needed a phone for an addition to the house that we did not put a phone jack in. There are many phones that can handle this but this phone has all the nice features needed for family and working from home a few days a week. The ability for each handset to be its' own speakerphone is great. We also utilize the intercom feature for the phones. You can page each phone you have (4 is the max) and the person in the room will hear it ring as if it were a phone call. The digital voice on the answering machine is very easy to understand and the multiple mailbox feature is another nice thing to have (not needed now, but will in the future). Many other features that are handy as well. So far so good.

V-Tech 2420, 2431
For the money, this is the best phone system I can think of for home or small business use. The 2431 (base unit) has a speakerphone, which makes it two phones in one, as it has the ability to intercom between the base unit and the handheld. Then we bought a 2420, so we have a 3-point intercom system. As we live in an older home, the intercom and the ability to place a phone where we wanted without running phone cords was important to us, and I spend a lot less time screaming around the house to call the family members. We will purchase two more 2420s in the future, to intercom easily throughout the house. The 2420s run off the base unit, and don't need a phone line, which is fantastic not to have to pay the phone company to run lines where we want the phones. Also, the VTech handsets each have Caller ID, which is a very handy feature, they show when another handset is in use (in case you don't have call-waiting, at least you know when someone is excessively tying up the hone line), and the speakerphone on each handset is perhaps my favorite feature. We have eliminated all the corded phones in the house in favor of this system, which has clear connections even outdoors, and two houses away from us. I can send the kids to the neighbors, and can page them from the 2431 via the intercom when they need to come home. Best of all, the original 2431 handset we bought flew off the hot tub in a sudden windstorm, the battery and battery cover landed in the pool (managed to catch the phone itself), and after the battery dried, it still worked! A minor ding on the antenna did not affect how the unit performed. We are all pleased with the features of this phone.

Excellent Phone - well worth the money
I was in severe need of a good cordless phone with a Caller ID Display right on the handset (which is so conveinent). I shopped around in every possible electronics store and found nothing that I liked...all the phones were ugly and had no good features.

I jumped onto Amazon and this phone system popped up I loved it at first for it's sleek look and then I read more about the phone and immediately ordered it, it was the best thing I did. This phone is excellent it has great features, distance, sound, clarity and it's lightweight and is a real nice looking phone. It has the Caller ID display right on the handset and the best feature that I love is the Message Waiting. I have home voicemail through my local telephone company and I was never able to tell if I had any messages unless I picked up my phone and dialed into my mailbox. This phone has a green light on the handset and the base that will blink when you have messages and on the display it will read "Messages Waiting"...I love it! I just ordered the supplemental handset for our bedroom and can't wait to get so I can junk my old cordless. If you are thinking buying this phone....do it!!!!
