really want to love this phone ... but i can't
this phone has all the makings of a great device. very good button layout, all the functionality one should need, a pleasant feel in the hand, an attractive package. BUT IT SUCKS!

the sound is nearly unusable. on the handset, people tell me i sound really quiet. on the speakerphone, they can barely hear me. on the headset, they can't hear me at all. additionally, the speakphone output fades away when there's even a little bit of ambient noise in the room -- this is a common problem with home office phones but it's exceptionally bad on this model.

i've tried returning this phone and getting a new one a couple times but to the same result. i contacted AT&T to see if they could help but they gave me the cold shoulder. it's no use -- this phone is awful.

i really want to like this phone but it can't. i'm only holding on to it until i can find a good, corded, two-line phone that works. any suggestions?

Speak Up! I Can't Hear You!
People complain all the time that they can't hear me when I speak on this phone. It does not matter if its the headset or the speaker. I even get cut off by answering machines who think I am not speaking. I do not recommend this phone.

Great phone for the price
I was pretty suprised at how well this phone worked. I was basically looking for a cheap speaker phone, as I was planning on putting it on mute, listening in on meetings, and picking up the reciever if I had to say something. The sound quality ended up being so good, I use it without the mute. The sound quality both for me and the recieving party is better than the one at my office. The one caviat is that the speaker and mike operate off the power that comes through the phone line. Because of this, if my wife picks up the other line, the sound in both directions becomes very faint. The manual says that this is the case, and says that if you have several phones, this can happen as well. I have 5 phones on the line, and as long as they're all hung up, everything works great.

Unacceptable for home use
I purchased six of these phones and the four line system. The range is exceptional and that is the only good thing that can be said for this system. Within four days, one phone became defective and it took Engenius four weeks and six phone calls to repair it. They didn't know they'd received it for repairs, said they mailed it back, (they hadn't), and at least four phone calls went unreturned for days at a time. The phone takes a second or two to obtain a line, there is no ability to have specific lines ring on specific phones short of using the voice answering system, which not all home users want to do, the battery life is very short, and the phones will suddenly "crash" and require you to turn them back on. Every few days the main unit need to be powered off and on. The software is very buggy and technical support not acceptable. I would not recommend this system for home use. You will be very unhappy, unless you need exceptional range, there is nothing else to recommend it.

Great range, OK quality
I bought this phone because I was tired of trying to get other cordless phones to work in my sprawling house and yard - they didn't have enough range. Specifically I recently tossed the Siemens Gigaset due to poor range.

Well, this phone works admirably - it has more than enough range for a large property with no fade out. The handsets are tough and feel solid (they are really meant for factory or warehouse use). Battery life hasn't been an issue for us at all - in a home you usually keep the handsets in a charging cradle when not in use anyways. Voice quality is as good as the Siemens was. And the fact that it works at 900 Mhz is a bonus since it won't interfere with my wireless Ethernet (802.11) network.

This is an update since I've had these phones for about 6 months now: They aren't perfect. When you put the phone into the cradle to recharge, you have to put it in carefully otherwise it'll look OK, but won't be recharging. Also the recharging contacts are fragile compared to other phones and in fact I have to toss out one of my SN-920's 'cause the contacts got damaged. And the microphone on another SN-920 died. Also, the phones aren't comfortable against your ear.

My ideal phone would have the SN-920's distance with better ergonomics and better recharge contacts. Unfortunately, I don't know of such a phone.

Well Built Nokia 6100 series clone
This phone is almost identical to a Nokia 6100 series phone, which I happen to like. It weighs more and has less battery life, but the size and feel is the same. It is an industrial phone and for its small size feels like a brick. I installed the phone without the external base antenna and received reception about 1/2 mile from my home. I live in a wooded area. The phone battery is a metal hydride and can be recharged without memory problems like nickel cad. I really like this phone. The build quality is outstanding and most of the other cordless phones I've owned just feel flimsy. You can't hold this phone against your head while typing because of it's small size, this along with the battery life are the only reasons I can't rate it 5 stars. The small size is also an advantage, you can fit this phone into the same case as the Nokia 5100/6100 series phones.

product stopped working after three months
I purchased this unit for my TiVo phone hook up and it only worked for three months. It is not worth the headache!

A couple of old misleading reviews
The technical content no longer states that the device supports caller ID, so that review is obsolete.

Note that the tech details also says that the two units are connected by Infrared (not RadioFreq, like a cordless phone, like I'd expect...).

Be sure you can can return this unit! If you need high speed (modem) or caller ID, I'd go for a wired cable (I'm am an engineer... :-(... ).

this product doesn't work at all? might be a bad one but i've tried to hook it up to several phones in my home plugged in to a standard outlet and it doesn't work. There looks like a green display button would come on if it worked but it doesn't come on either.

very poor sound quality
Unfortunately, the quality is very bad. I tried it on a variety of cordless and cel phones w/ 2.5 mm jacks, and it sounded terribly TINNY on all of them -- including a recently purchased Panasonic desk phone with a 2.5 mm jack. I recommend staying away from this item. The folding idea is a nice one and worth looking for in other models, but the overall sound quality of this particular headset is terrible.

Fairly good at the beginning, died out after 9 months
I paid a high price for this ($30), and after about 9 months of use, I started having problems with people not hearing me AT ALL! I thought it was the line or the phone, but after I changed that (I am looking for a better cordless), it immediately became clear the problem was with the headset. No wonder warranty is only for 90 days. I guess they do not expect them to last longer.

Having just bought a Panasonic cordless phone TGA 2224, which has much inferior sound to GE 27998GE6, I am disillusioned with Panasonic.

Why can't they make good electronics? So that we have to keep on buying them?

Everyone seems to be recommending the TCA 60, which is much cheaper.

A feature I found on a RadioShack one HS-1958, which would be nice to see elsewhere, is a gooseneck arm for the microphone, which allows you to better adjust the distance from your face without having to move it up, which prevents you from being heard.

Phenomenal headset
This is the best headset I have ever owned. The voice is clear and it has mute button. This fits on my home phone and cell phone--which is incredible! The headset for my cell phone is one of those stupid fit in the ear jobs that just fall out, are uncomfortable, dorky looking while you talk into a wire, etc. None are really that good. This one is great if you can just get past the air traffic controller look. I have! Remember, it never falls off or out, you are always heard, and you always hear your party, there is never a security or clarity issue....Top of the line!!!

I can't hear you!
I have been looking for a decent cordless with answering system for my home office. The handset volume is abysmal, I have to turn everything in the house off and the fan on my notebook is louder than the person I am speaking with on the phone. The Answering system is easy to use, and remote access is a breeze. Too bad I don't have super human hearing, but then, if I could spend the money on that I probably should have bought a more expensive telephone.

I love my phone!
Well I got this phone for Christmas last year and it's still going strong. I hear perfectly, no static, and I would recommend everyone to buy this phone.

Great
I got this as a wedding gift July 2003. I have had no problems with it at all. I love the phone. Good battery too. I can keep the hand set off the charger for hours and it will still work. My old cordless could not be off the charger longer than 20 minutes or it would die. I love that the answering machine has 3 mail boxes. Now no one in my family looses their messages. Overall I give it two thumbs up.

1 key fails
After spending hundreds of dollars on this phone system, I'm in the market again. What a waste of time and money.

The number 1 on the keypad stops working.
The number 1 on the keypad stops working. And it does so right after the warranty expires. I have 4 handsets, had to replace 2 (about $80 each after warranty), now I need to replace the other two, plus one of the replacements started doing the same (after the 90 days warranty. Otherwise (when it works) a decent system, way better sound and range than Siemens. Draw your own conclusions.

Callers complain they can't hear me!!!!
The phone system has alot of features but in year two I began to get complaints that callers could not hear us. We have four of the handsets around the house. We've never been able to get intelligent assistance from panasonic to help diagnose the problem. I don't know whether to replace the battery (although the batteries recharge as they are supposed to) or whether the handsets are simply failing or whether the problem is interference.

Not a great phone for family use...better for business situations. For family use, it drives the children crazy that they can't simply pick up an extension when another family member has answered the phone elsewhere and the call is for them. They have to learn how to hit the transfer button AND which extension number to transfer to (which is problematic since the cordless phones float around the house!!).

Poor quality, bad investment
We bought this phone and expanded it to 3 cordless handsets. In the second year of ownership, the #1 keypad quit working on every one of the handsets. Great craftsmanship. If you contact Sony, they will not stand behind the product and act as though this is not a quality issue affecting every handset produced for this phone. Buy any other brand!

I will never buy a sony phone again!
I was attracted to this phone by the aesthetics and the features it offered...little did I know that shortly after I bought it the #3 button would stop working. The worst part is that Sony customer service was pathetic. Their solution was to send the phone back which would leave me "phoneless" for 2.5 weeks. Or so they hoped as the customer service rep told me - no guarantee it wouldn't take longer than that. When I asked for a supervisor of the customer service manager I was told that "no one else would want to bother talking to me about this problem". Last phone/product I ever buy from them. Whatever happened to the customer is always right?

Nice look, nice problems.
This phone is good. But what's the point of having a phone where the #1 button stops working. The first phone I sent it back for an exchange and guess what happens? The new phone's #1 button just messed up again. It hasn't even been 2 months. Sony needs to fix this problem.

a complete waste of money
It's difficult to hear the person you're speaking with and I get complaints that they can barely hear me as well. Just so you know, it's not just the particular phone that I happened to buy because I bought 2 of them at the same time and they both had the same problem. I still use one when I need to but have gone back to using a phone with a cord.

toshiba sg 1700
Piece of garbage. Horrible distance. reliability stinks, especially the buttons. Would definitley recommend not buying this phone, no matter what the cost.

Toshiba failed me:-(
This phone (stinks)... I bought it not even a year ago and its dead already. It was never dropped or abused in any way. It also suffered from feedback when I used the microwave( which my new cheapie 2.4 GHz GE colors phone doesnt suffer from:-/ ) I used to love Toshiba, oh wells...
