Great Progressive Scan DVD Player!
RCA is Still the BestI already had a nice RCA 27" television and so I wanted to find a complimentary DVD player to go with it. I found the RCA DRC310N Progressive-Scan Slot-Load DVD Player at my local Radio Shack (for around $80). I was impressed immediately with the front slot-loading, since this has no openings in the front of the machine (the slot is barely wider than a CD and is protected by a rubber sleeve) or a large drawer that opens. This means less chance of dust getting into the unit, which appealed to my anal-retentive nature.
Also, the picture quality is superb. Although the unit has only a couple display settings I found this only mildly disappointing since the picture is so good: sharp crisp letters on black and blue backgrounds with no "dancing" or distortion.
I love the remote control that comes with this unit. It has the ability to run TV/VCR/DVD and is capatible with most GE & RCA components, which I love because both my TV and VCR are RCA models as well.
For the price this is one sleek DVD player. I also recommend buying some quality audio and S-Video cables (or you can get the progressive scan cables if that's what you prefer).

- Combines a VCR with Progressive Scan DVD/CD player, Cable Ready TV Tuner and AM/FM Stereo Digital Tuner with 30 preset
- 350 Watt 5.1 channel amplifier, 5 2-way Satellite Speakers and a passive subwoofer
- Audio decoders include Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic and Dolby ProLogic II
- Provides progressive component outputs, A/V composite and S-video outputs as well as numerous inputs
- Remote Control

Rio HT2030 Sonic Blue Home Theater - AWSOME!!!
Value-Priced Integrated System Hits Almost All MarksI bought this system to replace my own system I had cobbled together over the years. So I was able to replace my stereo receiver, cd player, vhs player, dvd player, and two sets of speakers, all in one suprisingly compact unit.
Setup was easy and fast. I appreciated the l-o-n-g cables provided by the manufacturer. Some units I have seen only came with 10 foot cables. The manual is very well written and easy to follow. Within an hour I had made all of the connections, placed the speakers, and programmed all of my cable stations (auto- search)and fm radio stations.
So far the unit has performed without a hitch. I like the variety of sound setups, including prologic, which is something not found on many lower-priced (and some high-priced) units. It even has a feature to program delays on the speakers to customize it to your exact room configuration (incredible!).
The remote control is not overly cluttered, and is well laid out. It does not however, control the power on/off for my tv set. So I have to keep that remote handy. It doesn't light up either, which would be useful at night. I replaced an Apex dvd player which had horrible search and control features. This dvd player control is much more intuitive and straightforward.
The only shortcoming for some might be the passive subwoofer. It is fine for me, but if you want really booming bass, better to get a powered subwoofer.
Overall, this is a quality unit that was well thought out by the mfgr. It has the most features and power I have seen on a unit in this price range.
1. it's only a 2x player, so when you fast forward in double speed, you can see every frame being played, but beyond that, it must skip frames to advance rapidly. Computer DVD-ROM's come at 12x already, so I think they could have made it faster. As it is, the player will advance anywhere from 2x to 100x in fast forward mode depending on your prefrence.
2. The dual layer DVD's give a VERY BRIEF pause while switching layers. Almost all players do this, but it'd be nice it the manufacturers would use a buffer to avoid the pause completely.
3. The "illuminated remote" is glow in the dark buttons that you can't see after the light's been off for more then 3 or 4 mintes. It'd have been nice if the remote was back-lit with an actual light inside.
4. The 1999 Hitachi and most 1998 Sony DVD players had dual laser pick-ups. The picture was read with one laser, and the audio with the other. This makes no noticable difference in the quality of viewing movies, but only players with the dual laser pickup will play CD-R discs like the ones you make in your computer's CD writer. Hitachi, since dropper the dual laser from it's player, and Sony now only has it on their top-of-the-line model.
5. If you stop the movie and do a picture or audio adjustment in the configuration menu, you have to manually re-find the spot you were at in the movie. If you just hit 'stop' and 'play' the player automatically goes back to where you were when you hit stop.
These are just small complaints, and for what it's worth, this is an awesome player.
