Little Big Portable that canHaving seen a friend own a Sharp DV-L70U, a two year old model DVD portable player with a 7 inch screen, I changed my mind from looking for cheap, regular DVD player that would sit like a duck under or top of a TV, eating dust, to looking for a portable player.
At first, the Sharp brand stood out from the pack due to reasonable price compared to others, its wonderfully crisp, 16:9 8 inch cinematic screen and dolby sound that can deliver dolby 5.1 surround when hooked upto an appropriate sound system.
Oh well, enough of the specs and all that you can probably read over the net. I will tell you what I felt about this product.
First, the size: it is light and thin, even with the detachable Ni-Cd battery that lasts 3.5 hours. I think this is thinner and a lot lighter than a lot of books that I carry around. I applaud the Sharp engineers in reducing the weight to such an unbelievable level.
Second, the screen: 8 inch really makes a difference in your point of view. All the movies I saw with the player never looked so better in wide screen.
Third, the portability: you can take this ANYWHERE you want-see a movie while you eat, on your bed besides you, even inside a restroom-not a likely place, though. Most of all, this compactness will likely shine when you are on the move. I can easily agree to people who will envy you and your player during long and tedious plane trips.
Last, value: currently, you can find great prices for Sharp portable DVD players including this model, and frankly, considering that you can easily hook this up to any modern TV/ VCR to play wonderfully high-quality motion and sound is worth the price difference than your sad, dust eating immobile DVD players.
There are few drawbacks-this player, I suspect that like others, skipped some scenes of DVD movies that I rented; probably due to scratched surfaces. Also, I'd like to see some visual aid when I play a audio CD on the player-the screen is just blank when you play one. Last, the concealed speakers of the player does not do justice-it's output dB is meager at best: of course, the compactness of the size limits its amplificating abilities, like all the other portables. Also, adding a fabric case for the player could have helped me from trying to find a way from possible scratch. Nevertheless, this is offsetted by the fact that they give you some good accessories, notably plenty of A/V connectors.
The remote is pretty good, in contrast to some people's complaints that they are big. Big? Give me a break. How do you operate your 'big' TV remote? This is small- less than a credit car size but a bit more thicker- and well designed, and I had not many problems using it.
So far, I have played 'Shine','Apocalypse Now,' and 'Driven', with the DV-L80U and I must say, I was surprised that I have enjoyed them all! Also, when hooked to my plain TV, the screen never looked better with a small portable DVD delievering such a high quality input of sound and motion into it. And even with the player itself, I was able to appreciate 'Apocalyse Now' to the full with its 8inch screen, with a few drops of tears for 'Shine'.
All in all, I enjoy this player, and without hesitation, I give a five star: never mind about lack of some progressive scan abilities-even if you own a HDTV, do you get HD programs? Note that progams for HDTV will not be made in full force until 2005. Sure, wait if you want. Such as it is, this DVD player is strongly recommended for your evaluation if you are considering purchase of ANY type of DVD player, be it portable or not.
Check it out.
Now please excuse me as I am off to buy some DVDs...
Sharp Portable DVDThe sound quality of this Sharp DVD Player is good. I have tested out the previous 7" inch player and this one, and the sound seems to be the same. It is, however DTS-compatable, and upon hooking it up with the 5.1 system DTS enhanced, the sound boomed out through the speakers, and it was just as good as table-top DVD players which are DTS-Compatable.
The Sharp Player is very Portable, much like other Portable DVD Players. The player is not too heavy, but not as light as Panasonic products. Attached to the battery, this player is about the size of three DVD cases on top of each other. On topic, the battery lasts about 4 hours long per charge. While on an airplane trip, I was able to watch "Gladiator," and "Fargo." which was excellent for the long ride. No airplane/car adapter has been made for this as of yet, and an extra battery is rather expensive at about 300+ dollars.
This is a must-buy for fans of the genre. I recommend it to anybody who has the money, and needs a DVD player. This one can stand alone as a Portable DVD Player where you can take on trips, or you can hook it up to your TV at home for a table-top DVD Player. The only downside is that you may be buying too many DVD's for the player because it's so addicting to watch on this beautiful machine. A + player, enjoy.

music cd's work great, cdr and cdrw with mp3s only. It does not take long to load up as some reviews added.
overall another qualitly product from panasonic. I highly recommond.

Good enough
Great Buyment hours. The picture is GREAT. The sound is wonderful. We have taken it on the road with us and hooked it up to the t.v. in the hotel room. There have been times when we have used this instead of our home DVD. The only thing I have not tried is the battery.
I read all the reviews on this item and others. Everything I read in the reviews were right on target. I am glad I bought this DVD. Price did play a role in my purchase. I wanted to spend around 300 - 400.00 dollars. I did not look at too many DVD's that were higher. But for the money I am very happy.
Very well designed and thought out product1) LCD display can swivel out forward and lean almost flat against the unit - great for cramped viewing quarters like economy class on an airplane.
2) Can simulate Dolby Digital and DTS effects in your regular headphones. The effect is breathtaking - it's like having a surround sound home theater in your headphones. Action movies never sounded so good.
3) Comes with battery model CGR-H603 which lasted for 2 hours and 26 minutes in my test with the LCD set to factory default brightness and the audio level set to 6 (very loud). You can reduce the brightness to increase the battery life.
4) An optional extended life battery is available (CGR-H601) which in the same test lasted for a whopping 4 hours and 30 minutes. That's a combined 7 hours of battery life - great for those longer flights.
5) When the battery dies in the middle of a movie, simply pop in another charged battery and the player will automatically continue the movie from the point where the first battery died. Very convenient.
6) Lightweight! This unit is very light and portable.
7) The 5 inch screen is very easy to watch. The size is not a limiting factor as you quickly get lost in the movie and even forget you're viewing a small screen.
8) This player supports 16:9 letterbox (widescreen) and 4:3 boxed modes.
9) Comes with a full featured remote control.
10) This unit can be hooked up to a TV or home theater receiver with the included RCA/Composite cable.
11) Options include car lighter adapter, cassette adapter, optical cables and more.
Overall, this is the best portable DVD player I have ever been exposed to. It's quality built and small enough for serious travel. ....

- Surface-mounted keypads grant "remote-free" operation of all essential functions
- 3.5-hour battery life, picture zoom, and stereo speakers for headphone-free listening
List price: $799.99 (that's NaN% off!)

It's worth it! Great Picture, Quality product. My final decision came down to models: The Toshiba SD-P2500 and Samsung L200. The three deciding factors were: 1) The Toshiba is not as bulky as the Samsung L200 and has progressive-scan output. 2) The Toshiba has easier menu functions and ergonomic design IMHO. 3) Longer battery life: 3.5 vs 3 hours. I was able to watch the entire EXTENDED version (2 DVDs) of Lord of the Rings Two Towers before the battery died.
I have only two complaints about this unit:
1) The view angle is not the greatest and takes some adjusting but once you find the right placement, the picture is sharp and clear.
2) The included accessories are limited. I wish Toshiba would have included the BitstreamPCM cable to connect into your receiver for 5.1 digital output. Also, no car AC/DC adapter is included.
FANTASTIC! SPONGEBOB TO SOOTH THE SOUL!It doesn't come with a car adapter, but go on ebay and they sell them cheap. Because of the size of the screen it was hard to find a decent case because most of them will only accomidate barely 8 inches. I went to Circuit City and they sell a bag called "Targus" and this bag will do the trick. I even brought my Toshiba 2500 into the store and sized it up. Plus the bag holds extra dvd's and cables, really a good buy and I recommend picking it up because this one switches from a back-of-chair viewing to a suspension between the two front seats.
If you can get your hands on this please do so. I did my homework on portable dvd players for over 6 months and I am proud to say I know I couldn't have done any better.
Don't leave home without it.

- Multichannel optical digital-audio outputs with DVD-Audio, DTS, and Dolby Digital surround passthrough

great in every way except very small screen
Deserves five starsBetter styling and build quality aside, the Panasonic has at least three significant advantages over non-Japanese players: 1) the screen is clearer and offers better viewing angles horizontally, so you can share the joy of DVD with another person; 2) the sound is just incredibly loud for a small player like this, unlike the low-end players -- in fact it feels almost like surround sound in a quiet room; 3) the tilting mechansim is really cool and allows you to adjust the screen angle freely.
The battery snaps to the back (and raises the player a bit) and offers a little over 2 hours of viewing pleasure. All considered, the Panasonic player is also much more portable than the other ones; even with the battery installed we are talking something you can just grab and watch, as opposed to carrying in two hands.
Is the Panasonic worth the extra money over the other players? I definitely think so.
Excellent Portable DVD PlayerThat is the exact question I had when buying this model, it is not the cheapest model on the market, nor does it have the same screen size as the competition, but the quality of the picture and sound win the day here.
The screen is super sharp, with colour, contrast perfect. The sound is crisp. This unit is also very compact with the battery attached, unlike the cheaper alternatives, whose batteries are the same size as the player itself.
This portable DVD is highly recommended for its practicality, build quality, and performance. I would also recommend buying an additional battery (6 hr battery can be bought) which is also available. A real performer.

- Super thin and light design for convenient travel
- 5-inch diagonal widescreen (16:9) LCD monitor renders proportionally correct widescreen films
- CD-R and MP3-CD compatible for music as well as movie enjoyment
- DTS & Dolby Digital surround outputs (not decoding) for immersive digital surround sound when used with a compatible AV receiver
- Approximately 5 hours battery life with included battery pack (when brightness is set to lowest level; may be shorter depending on conditions of use); 4:3/16:9/zoom screen selector lets you adjust picture size
List price: $599.99 (that's NaN% off!)

the best
Ultra Portable and the Sound is Fantasic
