VERY, VERY GOOD, BUT NOT EXCELLENT
For the price [...] this DVD player is well worth the money. It does not have progressive scan, but I did not purchase this player for that feature. This unit has many good features and the sound and picture quality are very good by using just the RCA audio and video connections. It had a very good review from consumer reports (a publication I highly recommed and utilize, sepecially for consumer electronic purchases). MP3 playback is very good, as is the VCD. DVD-R, CD-R/RW, all play well on this device.

Not an excellent player (for excellence purchase a Sony DVD-NC655P, my other player). But still a very, very good and economical player.

What a surprise!
I neither wanted nor needed another DVD player. I already have three. But this player was part of a rebate offer for the Samsung phone that I bought. What a surprise I got when I received this thing! I was expecting a cheap DVD player. This is not. This is a very decent quality player for, if you actually paid for it, a good price. The remote control is intuitively designed and the picture and sound quality is better than average. The only major gripe I have about it is that the video quality is just a bit jagged, like a Photoshop picture that's been sharpened too much. I'm still a diehard fan of Pioneer video products, but I'm going to keep my eye on Samsung. It's the company with the momentum. I originally planned to sell this player as soon as I got it. But it appears that I will be keeping it after all.

Good, inexpensive DVD player
I've had this player for about 8 months now and I'm happy with it. Reading some of the other reviews, I've heard comments about skipping DVD's, but I've never noticed a problem. I did end up having to buy speakers in order to get the audio to sound good, but that's the fault of my TV (only one audio input, while the DVD player has a left and right output). I've personally never had a problem with it, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone.

Breaks after 1 year-You have been warned
I bought this model (DVD-RP62S) in Jan 2003. Today it came up with an error "H07". Do a Google search on "H07" "Panasonic" and see how many people who have bought several Panasonic DVDs and after 1 year have this error come up. I expected more from them! My friend's cheap $30 off name dvd player is still running after 3 years. I will not be purchasing another Panasonic until they fix this motor problem.

The Panasonic DVD-RP62 is an astonishing bargain!
This DVD player does it all. I wanted a progressive-scan DVD player that could also handle MP3 files, and the Panasonic DVD-RP62K handles them effortlessly--with a very handy on-screen selection menu that's icing on the cake. The rest of this machine's performance is spot on perfect. The variable zoom is a nice feature--I use it far more often than I would have guessed. I also love the Quick Replay button--just touch Quick Replay and the scene backs up 10 seconds for an instant review of something you want to see again. Very cool!

My only quibble is the remote control. It's small, hard-edged and the buttons make it VERY hard to navigate in the dark. If you have a universal remote control, then this is a non issue. But since the remote is such a critical part of the satisfaction of using a DVD player, be forewarned that the Panasonic DVD-RP62 remote might leave you a little disappointed.

Otherwise, this is a superb machine. It's well designed, beautifully engineered and built, and the look and feel (except for the remote) is outstanding. Well done, Panasonic!

The small buttons on the remote do not bother me at all
I bought this player for Christmas this year and so far have been very impressed with the sound and picture quality. I've played 4 different DVDs entirely so far and have had no problems with any of them. As this is my first DVD player after years and years of VHS I'm still awestruck by how much better the picture is. I bought this player mostly based on the Panasonic name and the high review ratings posted by others, and the only complaint I saw repeated was the buttons on the remote are too small. Well, they are small, but I don't have any problems pressing them, and the size doesn't bother me a bit. I don't have a progressive-scan TV set (maybe later - I bought this planning to upgrade) but the picture is still really good with a regular TV. Overall this player gets 5 stars because I can't think of anything to complain about.

A Good Value
I thought that the Audiovox 1705 Personal DVD Player was a pretty good unit for the price. It is solidly built though the DVD door feels rather flimsy like it would break easily even with normal use. The control buttons have a good solid feel. Having all of the cables included makes this unit a good deal. It definitely makes this unit more versatile right out of the box.

Just keep in mind that this is a PERSONAL DVD player. (It says so right on the box.) The sound quality out of the tiny speakers is horrible. The video is crisp and clear but if you're out at an angle, the picture darkens and is hard to see. But if you're viewing alone, with good pair of headphones (you'll need to buy your own), this little unit is quite a pleasant surprise. It can be engrossing. It's almost like having your own personal home theater on your lap.

I haven't owned it long enough to judge reliability but I'll say this much. If you have a problem, the user's manual will be of little help. The user's manual is pretty bad.

great but I'm hearing noise....
out of the headphones. Are we supposed to be hearing the DVD turn while watching with a headphone?

I bought this at Sam's Club (actually the 1708 model which is the same) for $228. It's everything I wanted. The picture quality is great and quite affordable. A bit too heavy and bulky but I just wanted something to keep the kids entertained on the plane or road trips.
The remote lets you turn the subtitles and other functions on and off without stopping the movie. I love that. It's annoying that you can not charge the battery and watch the movie at the same time. The charge lasted the whole Godfather movie. All and all I like it.

Could not ask for a better portable DVD player for the price
I recently bought the AudioVox portable DVD player and I have taken it on many trips. It has worked flawlessly. Here are my Pro's and Con's.

Pros: Outstanding value, includes car kit and many different useful wires, sleek design, reliable, great picture, big screen, and easy to use.

Cons: Cannot scan forward or backward, you can only skip scenes, no battery indicator that I can find....thats all

Overall, I highly recommend this DVD player, I was a
little skeptical at first, but this turned out to be a great buy.

DVD FOR CHEAP stuff. DH&AS
When I ordered this DVD system, I thought, hey, cool a player for so less(...). I was a little wrong. When I tried putting in a DVD, sometimes, it would say,"NO DISK". I was outraged. When it did work, there would be this blinding red light throughout the movie. This DVD player didn't even read "Star Wars"!!!! I hate this thing. It's junk!(...)

Horrible and Cheap
IT seemed like a great deal to get a DVD player for under $40 but what you get is what you pay for. On multiple occasions I have put a DVD into the player and gotten the No Disc response. This would not be the best player for most.

Super Bang for Buck!
Player yields good quality playback of everything I've thrown at it. DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW, even VCD. It was able to play cheap disks that Cyberhome unit couldn't.
It doesn't have progressive scan outputs, but since my TV doesn't have the inputs, I won't loose any sleep over it.

Guaranteed to Break, Terrible Customer Service
I purchased this dvd player from Amazon. It was perfectly satisfactory for about 7 months until it died. Wouldn't play more than a few seconds of a dvd, and would degenerate into a horrible screeching noise. Norcent agreed to replace it, as long as I paid the shipping costs, which were half the original cost of the dvd player. A month (and many dogged phone calls later) I received a replacement. What a joke. It had somebody else's rented dvd in it, and though it played the picture fine, there was a repetitive clicking noise, which was probably why the previous customer had returned it. But instead of fixing the problem, they just sent it to me. Norcent admitted the mistake and agreed to pay for the shipping costs to replace the replacement. Another month and a half and many irate phone calls later, I got my third dvd player. This last one (and it will most assuredly be my last) held out for about a month before emitting a sharp click and dying completely in the middle of a movie. Please, save yourself time, misery, and money. Get a real dvd player from a real company.

VERY GOOD DEAL!
This player is worth every dollar. I have owned this player for 6 months. I bought it because my $800 Sony DVD player stopped working after only 3 years of use. Overall, this player is actually better than my Sony was. Yes, you read correctly. This player is better than my Sony! It is better for many reasons. The Norcent can play DVDs, CDs, CDRs, and even Kodak picture cds. My Sony could NOT play CDRs or Kodak picture cds. Also, the Norcent barely pauses when the layers are changing. Most of the time I don't even notice the layer change at all! With the Sony the layer change was very noticable. It would take at least half a second to change layers in the middle of the movie. This was always very annoying. The Norcent is a nice silver color which makes it very classy looking. I did have a brief problem with the player one day. Everytime I put in a DVD the subtitles would automatically come on and I had to turn them off. Also, the DVD would stop and then refuse to play at all. I fixed these problems by simply unplugging the player for 1 minute and replugging it in again. By doing this I reset the players settings and I have not had these problems since. I guess it was a fluke event. I doubt it will ever happen again. My biggest complaint about the Norcent is that in very dark movie scenes I can notice a lot of distortion in the background. This is annoying if you are watching a horror movie. If it wasn't for this problem the player would be perfect. Most people will be very satisfied with buying this player. Unfortunatly, I am planning to buy a different player because I am picky about the distrotion. I will likly end up spending a $1000 or more for a high-end player. Few people would feel the need to do this. I just happen to be a very picky person. Overall, if you are an average consumer you can't go wrong with this player. BUY IT!

A Big Bang for the $ in a Small Box
I had been looking for a 2nd DVD player that will do multi-format playback (DVD-VCD-SVCD-MP3). My Apex 5131 changer has served me well, but since it was the only player I'd had experience with, I figured to get another. While perusing the Nerdout.com forums on dvd players, I came across some good comments on the Norcent DP300, and the price seemed right, so I bought one. This single disc unit is small, but it's performance belies it's minimalist demeanor. It will play anything but soup can lids, as near as I can tell.
One of my gripes with the Apex unit was having to re-adjust my TV's video setting to make the picture viewable each time I watched a DVD in it. The Norcent was perfectly balanced right out of the box, PLUS it has built in brightness, contrast, & sharpness controls to boot! The only shortcomings I can see with it is not having a front display (no biggie, as the onscreen menu is well laid out and easy to use), and it not having an optical digital output (coax only). The build quality overall is quite adequate, although a little "delicate-seeming", perhaps. But heck, what do you expect at this pricepoint?
This unit was purchased to be used as a 2nd machine. Well ..guess what? The Apex was recently moved into the back bedroom. This little silver box is chock full of features at a price you can't beat.

NOW QUITE PLEASED! (Was: EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!!)
******UPDATE 29 OCT 2002*******

Okay, after a month of familiarity, I can definitely say that I am now pleased with my Hyundai HDP-550S! Yes, the "setup" issues (S-Video and subtitles) are annoying and rather strange, and yes it takes like five whole seconds longer to "load" than other players, and its manual is sparser than the already sparse manuals of today (namely, it leaves out those "setup" instructions), but it is a fine product all the same for most people who aren't terribly demanding A/V-philes (nothing wrong with those folks, though). I have, actually, bought one for a friend as well, so happy am I with this product!

****UPDATE 25 SEP 2002****

Thanks very, very much, fellow "Electronics Fan" from SF, CA!! You're certainly a whole lot more helpful than Hyundai Electronics Pacific! I haven't tried out your suggestion yet (am waiting on my THIRD player -- LOL), but it makes a lot of sense!

ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

********original review of early September**********'

The $$$ price (after mail-in rebate) sounds great, but I could not get this Hyundai HDP-550S DVD Player to work! Yes, I know how to connect S-Video and optical audio...I've done that with my other players with no problem. I've since exchanged the HDP-550S I originally received with another, and it's still not sending any video or audio signals! My TV and audio receiver are fine, so they're not the issue.

BEWARE THIS HYUNDAI. There is no technical support info in the manual (i.e., where to go for service), no Hyundai help line, only an e-mail address not in the manual but on a separate sheet of paper.

Again, I know how to connect optical audio and S-Video (as straightforward as can be), and my connections are fine (tried another player, an RCA make, successfully), so I can only conclude that the two Hyundai HDP-550S DVD Players I've tried so far are at fault. Interestingly, both were manufactured in March of this year ('02)...might there have been a run of defects at the factory??

Hyundai DVD Player
I was searching for an inexpensive DVD player. I read the customer reviews on the Apex and other models and they were pretty mixed. I figured for [$$] it's tough to go too far wrong. I took a chance by buying before reading a custoer review.

The installation was a snap. The remote is easy to use (this was a problem with some of the Apex reviews I read). The Dvd's I've played so far work fine.

An excellent buy for someone unsophisticated like me.

Good for the price
Works good for the price....some menus and features could be better, but it works.

Good player
This is a great DVD player. It has everything you need, at a price you can't beat. It's such a good buy. It's easy to set up and easy to use. A great first DVD player for anyone who is thinking of getting a DVD player. I wouldn't use it on my HDTV home theater, but if you just want something simple that looks great, this is the one. It has good sound and picture for the price. Haven't had any problems with it, what can I say I love it. It was cool.

Great player!
We bought this JVC recently as a second DVD player to use in our bedroom and so far we're very pleased with its performance. We don't need the CC function so the problems mentioned by the other reviewer don't really apply to us. One thing, the remote on this model will not control your TV but that's something we can live with. Hook up is easy and picture quality excellent. The player's options are easy to setup too from the onscreen display. A good buy.

Economical DVD player to have.
Wanted to purchase a progressive scan DVD player and settled on this one because of the great price. Bought it middle of February and have had no problems with it so far. Picture quality is great, easy install, able to play all DVD's and CD's in my collection so far, including burned CD's. I haven't been able to test out the memory stick capabilities yet but nice option to have. If you are in the market for progressive scan DVD under $..., I would recommend this one. It's sleek, compact and easy to hook up. The main remote is a little clunky with the toggle selector but a minor design flaw.

One of the Best and Price is Right!
I bought this DVD Player for my son, who is very picky and particular about his electronics. He is really a connoisseur when it comes to electronics. So I definitely had to do a thorough research before I made a choice as to which Player to get him. His requests included progressive scan, which this one has and since he has the HDTV, which I know nothing about but he tells me that it requires a superior DVD Player to equal the quality of the picture that it already has. Naturally I was a bit nervous when I purchased this one and had it sent to him in California. I held my breath until he got it hooked up and gave me his report on it. He loved it! He said it is very thin and streamlined, which I could not tell from just looking at the photo on amazon.com. According to him, the sound is great (that was another feature that he requested, some special type of sound, but I can't remember what he called it, it was similar to "Surround Sound" and I did not actually know if this one had the sound that he wanted or not) but he was very enthusiastic in his praise of the sound, as well as the picture quality. He tells me that the picture is perfect, very sharp and clear. I could not pay a thousand dollars for a birthday present for him and most of the 5-star DVD Players that had everything that he wanted on it was around that price and some even more than that. I really wanted to get him one that had a 5-star rating, since I do not know a lot of the technical stuff about electronics, and I knew he would not be happy with anything less, so I had to rely on the reports of others, and this one did not have any drawbacks evidently, since it was given good marks by everyone who rated it. If you are looking for a report on the technical aspects of it, you will have to read some of the other reports, all I know is that this one pleases someone who does know a lot about the technical things, and he is very pleased with it so that is enough for me! He said it has many special features that he wasn't expecting, like the one that lets him view his digital camera shots so easily. His only criticism of it is that the remote controls (it has two for some reason)are not lighted, but he said that they do what they are supposed to do without any problems, so it is not a big deal nor a handicap, but if he had designed them he would have had lighted remotes. The best thing about this one for me was the price, it can't be beat! To get a DVD Player of this quality for [the price]. was a life saver for me, as I wanted a really nice one that would please my picky son, but I could not afford the ultra expensive ones and was not expecting to find anything with 5 Stars and of this quality for such a low price. I really was expecting to and prepared to pay double the price of this one. Now I wish I was in the market for one for myself, he has praised this one so highly I want one now!

Ms. Shara L. Bouie
My personal review on the Samung Progressive Scan would be the mulit-cabliblites of the pro- scan DVD from Screen to DVD. The over all clarity of the progressive scan is next to the top ten next with the Sony DVD and Video Progressive-Scan, and the Philips. Although, the following questions of it's mulit-usage, maybe , How would this product work with my entertainment system quailty and or Is this product able to be used with my pc or audio system?" Yes, to both the Audio and Visual question being that during the actual connection process is so simple a child could program the Samsung Progressive Scan. In closing wether dealing with a simple digital camera to the a Kitchen Mixer , I rate from personal usage of this product at the highest a 10.

Thank You
