great machine
real handycamThe Sony DCR-TRV50 has a 1/4 in. 1.5 Mega Pixel HAD CCD. The effective video pixels used is 970K while the still is 1,390K, but more about the still performance later. The DCR-TRV50 has a 10x optical, 120x digital zoom while the horizontal resolution is rated at 530 lines, the top for the MiniDV format.
An upgrade of the DCR-TRV50 over the DCR-TRV30 is the addition of a touch panel LCD screen. The LCD is 3.5 in. and 246K pixels. The camcorder also has a color viewfinder. When you first hear of the touch screen feature you?re likely to think it?s frivolous, but it?s actually quite useful. Using the touch screen LCD you can adjust the focus and the exposure. If you have an area that is under or over exposed or an area that you want to put in focus all you have to do is touch on it an the camcorder adjusts automatically. This is a great intermediate between automatic and manual control. It gives the inexperienced user a way of tackling the camcorder controls which can be very daunting. Sharp was the first company to add a touch screen LCD but I think Sony has really taken this option and flown with it. It?s a really great feature, especially for those less experienced camcorder users.

Wow!!!! How did I ever live without this?
Great monitor...after some minor tweaking.
Outstanding 19" LCD for the price...First off, this screen looks beeeeauuuuutiful! I mean, wow, talk about clean, simple and sleek. I don't need all the crazy bells and whistles such as speakers, USB ports, etc, that this monitor lacks...c'mon who the hell relies on a monitor's speaker; likewise, if you need more USB ports, get a freakin 4-port hub for twenty bucks.
One other factor to note is that this monitor is only analog signal, no DVI. If half of you reading this even know what that acronym stands for, let alone what the difference is, I'd be very impressed. Basically, it's a digital signal that should make images on the screen appear better. Guess what, I couldn't give a hoot about this; in fact, my video card on my 1 year old Dell doesn't even have DVI output. Unless you're a gamer that has no life, no girlfriend and sits reading amazon.com reviews all day long, then don't worry about having only analog.
With that said, onto the actual image quality. Well, upon turning the screen on for the first time, I prayed to the Lord Almighty that no dead pixels should appear. And the Lord heard my prayer and proclaimed, "Thou shalt not have any dead pixels, not even ONE, lest Sony give you a hard time with their dead pixel policy". And the Lord gazed upon the screen and saw it to be good. Ah yes, Bible studies ver. 1.0 amazon.com style...
...anywhoo, this is the most brilliant screen I have ever seen. The contrast ratio is like 600:1...that means it's amazingly bright and vivid. Be prepared to actually lower the contrast and brightness--that's a good thing to have to do with a monitor folks. The onscreen menu options are clear, concise and virtually dummy-proof. For all you fretting about manually adjusting the screen size, rotation, alignment etc., fear not; this is an LCD and it automatically adjusts all the settings for you, like most other LCD's on the market. I have the image size set at 1280 x 1024 on my Windows XP computer and everything looks magnificent. Text is clear especially using the "clear type fonts" available only on XP for LCD screens.
If you're in the market to toss your 60lb CRT out the window and upgrade in style to an LCD, this is the one. Don't worry about Sony's newer models they have out now with DVI capability. Chances are your video card doesn't even have the output so you'd be wasting your money. This is an EXTREMELY affordable 19" monitor. Now's the time folks...buy it.

very good but one flawNow the best and worst feature... The FF and REW speed is great if you use a T120 tape, it zips through a tape in no time. However our family watches lots of kids video's which are usually 30-45 minutes long. Rewinding these is agony, it is sooo slow. I had to use my old VCR just as a rewinder. I'm not sure why it can't rewind at a normal speed in these cases. If you use a VCR for full length movies and time shifting on T120 tapes then this won't be a problem.
Great SVHS recorderI bought this for my 4DTV system, and the recorded video in SVHS is simply AMAZING. If you use normal videotapes, you can record in SVHS ET mode, which is much better than VHS, but I keep some real SVHS tapes for shows that I want the best quality from. If you don't use real SVHS tapes, you should use the higher quality VHS tapes, otherwise SVHS ET will flicker a little.
Recording to normal videotapes was really a downer, but I can barely tell the difference between SVHS recorded video and the original. I highly recommend the use of the S-Video connectors for best performance.
The 4DTV I mentioned is a digital satellite system that works on C-Band satellites (i.e. big dish) and so I get DVD quality video from satellite (not like the overly compressed DSS/DiSH video), and laserdisk quality video on the analog (totally uncompressed) channels. These are the feeds that DirecTV and Dish get many of their channels from.
Good starter VCR for S-VHS.First for the pros...
1. Better sound than regular Hi-Fi VCRs. Noticed some better effects with like echos and left or right channel voices.
2. Sharper picture. Can't really tell if 400 lines are really there on Widescreen movies. But still, picture is better than with standard VHS. Using RCA cables. Probably better if I use S-Video cable, but my TV isn't S-Video compatible.
3. FF and REW dial is kinda nifty. Two FF and REW scanning speeds. Rapid 360x FF and REW speed is awesome. Rewind a full tape in about a minute. Speed is adjusted as the weight on the spools change to prevent snapping at the end of tape.
Cons
1. No way to reset the counter to zero.
